Methods for finding clues
How deep to dig when gathering clues?

First post, here I go! I've been reading the Cloverfield posts across the interwebs for days now, and I think I'm finally caught up with the latest theories. I going to put up my observations, and I want to see if anything sounds like a lead to follow up on.

First, I think the idea that Jamie's profile is the place to start is dead on. While all the profiles have some minimal links to the movie's premise (Godzilla and Jurassic Park references, etc), Jamie's has actual cryptic sounding messages and images to ponder. I started by looking at her singular blog post.

[23]

What time did you wake up today?
6:30

A convenient 6 and 3 sighting

Where is your favorite place to be?
Underwater.

We know the creature came from underwater. Since SeaQuest is her favorite TV show too, perhaps asking water-based questions would illicit a useful response?

How many glasses of water, a day, do you drink on average?
About 3 nalgenes worth.

It struck me that nalgene might be a deliberate word placement, as it refers to a specific sport jug whose chemical composition led to possible health risks, including altering gene expression. Makes you wonder what would happen if you combined a nalgene jug with slusho's magic ingredient?

In her favorite movies, Paprika jumped out at me because it is an anime movie (Banana Anime, anyone?), and doesn't seem like it fit with the other shows. Paprika is also directed by Satoshi Kon -- who also did voice acting in it, and was born in 1963. The name Satoshi should sound familiar to those following the Slusho site. Paprika debuted at the 63rd Venice International Film Festival, just to make the paranoia complete.

Hopefully, these weren't mentioned before, because I did run a search first before posting. I did link to wikpedia articles for the bold words, not the numbers.

[/23]

Now that I'm out of "23" mode, is this typical of an ARG? I would think that there would be some sort of clue that you're on the right track. So far, it seems like a lot of simple tongue-in-cheek gags tying everything together, but not pointing to any new content.

tmerch & tinag222 - House Of Leaves MUST be related. I think that might be the starting point - or, at least, a big 'hint' about method, etc. It better be a good book, b/c now I must read it. Hurm...

Evil - good points about Jamie.

I still think, w/regard to the myspace pages that the most profitable method would be: (1) to be thinking in terms of a lateral riddle, i.e., don't try to go right for the 'answer' and figure it all out at once, but just flesh out backstory and let the 'answer' reveal itself; (2) messaging between now and January is our chance to get more info. from them; and, note: limited time frame!! So, use it wisely, and note the apparent rule: you can't ever let on that it's not real.

In terms of content of the pages: we should be on the lookout for anything that we can figure out by cross-referencing information, e.g., the relative ages of each person (just an example). And, the pics on each page probably conceal some clues/puzzles. Finally, some relation between the Slusho 7 and the flavor robots? This has been done to death and w/no results as yet, but there might still be something there (esp. considering the recent awesome find re: J.J. robot tshirt from the LOST season 1 special features DVD). The connection seems pretty striking, just look at that pic of Beth drinking from 3 drinks w/star-light patterns behind her - doesn't that seem to point to the Flavors page on Slusho.jp?

Until anything new surfaces, I think our best bet would be to just treat this as marketing and get to know the characters - start fleshing out each of the 7's life story, relations, family, etc. IF there's an ARG surrounding this, it will probably take some time to develop; and, when it does, it will most likely involve fake and real websites about whatever science is behind the monster (it's development and/or discovery, awakening, etc.). At this point, we should just be fleshing out whatever bits of this alternate reality (/lateral riddle) we can get.

So, some questions to answer:

1. Rob's tshirt - wtf? (and, what kind of butterfly is it?)
2. where is Lil' in each of her pictures?
3. what's Hawks' "augie" shirt?
4. Who are the girls w/Hud in his pics?
5. Where's the 'you owe my $11' guy? Is it Lil's roommate, Niles?
6. What's on "gramps"'s tie? (Rob & Hawk's 'gramps' - Hawks' pics).
7. Hawkins family tree generally.
8. Who's in the picture on the tree in the middle of the pic of the radio in the back window of the car (Jamie's pics)?
9. Are the songs on each page significant, and if so, how/why?
10. Are each person's pets or former pets significant?
11. Apart from Hawk mentioning "chugging a Slusho" in his blog, does anyone have any connection w/Slusho?

Those are the first (11) that came to mind? Maybe a thread should be started w/a list of questions we can (realistically) get answered about the characters and their backstory? Also, we should be keeping each other informed about the conversations we have w/each character? We should be measuring their response-behavior.

Indeed.

Evil - have you kept track of all the instances of 63 at all just to have something to work with?

I can safely say that your theory here hasn't been touched so far, least that I've seen...and it's entirely plausible and reasonable and keeps within the frame. It also does work extremely well with tmerch's notion of House of Leaves. Thinking laterally would definitely have to include common sense. Why bring in arbitrary elements when nothing suggests it? Instead, look at what's obvious and then look at those incidentals.

In a large way that's exactly how slusho got fed to us. It's in your face but the answer isn't immediately obvious. You'd have to think about this as an actual product and if so, would it have a website or a company headquarters, etc....and find it that way. Nobody did, of course, they went at it from the OOG sense and the fliers from the shoot in LA. Had nobody caught that connection I wonder how long we'd be sitting here without knowing squat about slusho.jp!

BUT...the hubs got on the ball and finally ordered the tshirt (and a cap too he said! woo), and I guess he got into it because he said he got one for himself too, which is funny...but pretty cool (he's in Iraq is why it's funny...like dude, pay attention out there, kay?) so hopefully it'll be here soon and hopefully I didn't also get left out of the japanese papers. Laughing

Jamie: she was the one who started adding friends right off the bat. She's the one who supplies the ms page clues. She's got some curious things in her survey. Isn't she one of the two with comments about wanting to see who they are in the future, or being able to move into the future?

She also "destroyed the dinosaurs." What the hell is that anyway? It sounds like a reference to something - a line from song maybe? Some hipster pop culture reference?

Also, tinag222, that's a really good point about the way slusho.jp was discovered. I don't think they intended it to go that way. We found the myspace pages just the way they wanted it w/the writing on the back of the new photo on 1-18-08. Even then, it seemed like we found those myspace pages faster than they had planned (So there! HA! Bring it, JJ!).

So, my question is this: if nobody had noticed the on-location signs that said "slusho" - if we hadn't found 'slusho.jp' that way, how would it have been discovered? How else would we have found slusho.jp? Or, was that the plan all along? Did they call their shoot "slusho" for just that reason?? Seems unlikely.

If slusho.jp was discovered earlier than they had intended, then they presumably scrambled to patch the damage (so to speak). That could explain why it wasn't fully up and running at first - the recent 'update' that opened up Happy Talk & the FavorBots, etc. Their original plan (which they would still be trying to stick to) might have been Myspace first, Slusho second. Dunno If that's true, it would explain why nobody's found anything at Slusho! so far. It's a dead-end, b/c it's not ready to be brought into play yet; but, it was found, so there it is - a red herring... for now.

Any ideas about diff. ways someone might have possibly discovered Slusho.jp, if that name had never been spotted on a sign at a filming location? There's the t-shirt in the trailer, but would that have realistically been spotted and recognized for what it was if people didn't already know to look for "slusho"? Other than the tshirt Hawk is wearing in the trailer, is there any other ways we might have found Slusho.jp?

Hi everyone, my first post, woohoo!!

Don't know if this will help, or if anyone has spoken to him already about this (quite a lot of pages on this thread to go through lol) but have been talking to Hud on myspace, had quite a few messages going back and forth now. been talking about japanese films mainly, don't know if there's anything to go on with that. the messages are bellow, if anyone could help come up with a good reply i could send then that would be great.

haven't seen Ghost, is that another japanese flick?

Yeh have seen Howl's moving castle, but i didn't really like it as much as the others. thought visually it was amazing, and I love the idea, but thought the ending let it down a bit. are there any other animations your into? 'Ghost in the Shell' is amazing if you havn't seen it.

Yeah, I need to see it again though. The only time I saw it was on the bus going to ski club in high school. I remember digging it, though. Have you seen Howl's Moving Castle? Very interesting, so unique. I coulda done without billy crystal's irritating dubbing in the US version, but other than that, really cool.

Hey Hud, how it going? just looking at your page at saw that you listed Spirited Away as one of your favourite films, good choice lol. do you like any of his other work? I love 'Princess Mononoke'.

Craig.

The reply I was thinking was maybe to ask him what japanese films he's into, if any. could try and move the convo to films like 'the host'. would that be to obvious?

Craig.
P.S. you need to read the myspace message from the bottom, up. forgot to swap it round.

I don't think that's the case with these. They knew what they were doing long before we did. I don't think they underestimated anyone at all - if ya step back and look at what actually did happen, we have impressed no one. Sure it looked not ready yet...but they're in control. They never had to put anything online...they could've had a placeholder and little more. Most accomplished webdesigners know not to put up a half ready site. It's complete when it goes live or it doesn't go live. Amateurs put up "under construction" pages - not professionals.

They used "updating" for you which changes up the context - to appear as if it's always been there and they're "updating" - but again, that's not how it works in web design - they leave the outdated content alone and just update and upload...it'd be the same irrational move as if the 1-18 site had these pics up and then suddenly puts up a picture square that says "updating, BRB"...

That's the big one that made me suspect it went up exactly how it was supposed to look at that stage. And again, you'd be blurring between in game and PMs. If the PMs weren't ready there wouldn't be a slusho site online anywhere at all unless it was ready to be live. If you mean IG, then the "updating" is less than professional but might suggest the company itself is new. That could reasonably be supported by the history section in which Ganu turned the business over to his cousin, and it's the cousin who launched slusho and this whole discovery of the ingredient is relatively recent to the site going up.

No way to prove it either way and in the long run it probably isn't relevant to speculate too deeply on outside the general one that they're not ready. I think it's been us that wasn't ready. The whole slusho find should make that clear. Razz

This is what I mean above. If we exclude every shred of the OOG element, and just remain with the trailer itself. We'd all be sitting here waiting 2 weeks on a new picture, being paced til they got the ms stuff ready for us. THAT one yeah, cause they introduced it later after the 1-18 launch...so it's a PM controlled thing that we not even know it exists no matter how many ms searches people did. They tell us.

They're the PMs....that's how it works...

I can't speak for any other forum/net source but how it worked on here was once we got the high def trailer was when this kicked into high gear.

Let me bring your attention to this too - which I did a bunch in the early pages of this thread and few listened...and are now in the last 100 pages just now arriving at the same thing. ;-p

The trailer - the bootleg = I'd bet money that was a plant. I saw the trailer and so did scores of others but nothing about it was that intriguing it generated this kinda buzz. That happened when it got "yanked" from YT (but nowhere else)...raising the question of how the hell would paramount even know there's a bootleg trailer off a cell phone on YT out of the gazillion ones on there. It was when that happened, it guaranteed the net buzz and there ya go.

They were always paying attention...and then they released the high def version "instead"...

On here, however, someone had specifically pointed out that the roof guy was wearing a slusho shirt...and that person had pulled up slusho.com and was posting asking if anyone knew how long it's been up. Was this legit.

What helped legitimize it had been recalling the posts from prior to that on the shoot in LA with the slusho fliers and trucks. But let's remove the OOG part and consider the obvious link. Slusho was the fictional drink in alias. THAT was supposed to be the nod of correctness, not the slusho trucks in LA. That association to alias validated slusho as relevant to this movie, since it's on the shirt, and a fictional drink which doesn't need a shirt or a site...therefore, it's IG. Now if somebody picked up on that on July 3 and found slusho that night...you seriously think they wouldn't be ready? No way.

The list of books/movies in the ms sidebars are like JJ's tshirt. Incidental...right in your face but incidental. We're all looking directly and missing the incidental things. Hence the lateral puzzle slap in the head right off the bat in their posts between them before they added a soul. Everything that was on ms before they began adding should be re-examined in that perspective....starting again with Jamie's survey...

HoL

tmerch,
I just briefly wanted to say that yes, a thread for HoL is a great idea. I won't be able to actively participate b/c I'll be starting a graduate program in a week or two that will be kicking my ass three ways from Tuesday. And as I recall, HoL is a pretty time-intensive undertaking. That said, though, I'd love to read about what other folks are coming up with. So, go for it, says me.

I agree that the Slusho.jp that we found was exactly what they wanted us to find. The "Customer Feedback" page was active from the very beginning, and they used our e-mails to Satoshi to come up with the quotes in "Your Happy Talk", which was activated later.

If this is a game (I'm still not convinced that it is), it wouldn't make sense for the to make *everything* available from the beginning. With the amount of people following this, if the entire "game" was made public day one it'd be done within hours.

They have given themselves two vehicles for periodic updates:
- "Real time" MySpace pages
- Periodic pictures on the 1-18-08 site

I don't think there's any secrets around here. I think, for now, this is an ARE more than an ARG. After all, they do have to keep this going for the next five months...

but from what jj said way back there are still other sites out there that havent been found yet. but how the hell do you go about finding something in amongst all this mess, without any concrete clues to what you are actually looking for.
i don't think they are anywhere near done yet on releasing stuff but i still want to know what these other sites are.

For what it's worth:

on July 9th, Harry Knowles from AICN wrote:

JJ Abrams drops Harry a Line on all this 1-18-08 stuff!

Hey folks, Harry here... There's conspiracy theories abounding regarding JJ's little flick to juice us up for his badass STAR TREK recreation. So JJ Abrams wrote me to give us all a clue, cuz we're at square one of this mystery! But note... the game sites apparently have nothing to do with JJ. And also... he seems to be stating that you guys have yet to find all the sites he's put up... and yes, you'll have to find them. The man is laughing at you, me and all of those hiding in the shadows. SO... find em if you can... let us know here at AICN... seems we have a scavanger hunt, ain't it cool?

J.J. Abrams wrote:

Dear Sir,

Thanks for your support of our little movie. I can't wait to talk to you more about it -- of course, knowing you, by the time we talk you'll know more than I will.

Regarding the online stuff you posted: yeah, we're doing some fun stuff on the web. But, obviously, if the movie doesn't kick some massive ASS, who gives a rat's about what's online? So as you can imagine, we're focusing mostly on THAT. For what it's worth, the only site of ours that people have even FOUND is the 1-18-08.com site. The others (like the Ethan Haas sites) have nothing to do with us.

Stay cool the rest of the summer -- and thanks per usual for AICN!

JJ
