Uberg, I also think it's a puzzle because no characters, except for situps guy and crab-bursty guy, have appeared, and we're not solving an "hay guys my gf got kidnapped by evil cultists/terrorists/monsters", it's something about Houdini.

As for the Houdini in cuffs one, try using different colors, might do something.
Well, yes. We call that a puzzle trail around here. This is a little unusual since puzzle trails aren't usually this well funded, involved, and hard to decipher all at the same time. More unusual is it really hasn't revealed its point yet, other than vaguely revolving around Houdini and entertaining people who watch the show.

For some reason that monologue is irritating you know, the song hurts and I'm bleeding--I keep thinking I've heard it somewhere, some book perhaps, but Google brings nothing, so...

In any case, though there's little to solve here, and it's not really an ARG so much as a puzzle trail, I'm having a bit of fun just following along. I just thought I'd put my two cents in.

By the way, does anyone know where that Japanese restaurant is? Anyplace with an actual revolving whatchamacallit is worth...er, "investigating", yeah, that's it. ;) It's not important at all, and undoubtedly will have little bearing on the puzzle trail, but I'm just curious...

(I wonder, though--do they actually serve fugu, or was that all just for the little skit? Because if they actually serve fugu, that narrows it down.)

EDIT: It's called Sushihiroba--sadly, none of the 17 fugu-approved sushi restaurants are run by Sushihiroba. No fugu for you. :)

Binary from the video on buriedintheground.com:

Quote:
01101000 01101001 00100000 01101101
01101001 01100100 00100000 01101101
01101111 01101110 01101111 01110100
01101111 01101110 01101111 01110101
01110011 00100000 01100011 01101111
01100100

Which seems to translate into: hi mid monotonous cod

The guy in the straitjacket seems to speak in reverse, which is something I think I might leave for übergeek to take care of. Wink

He also repeats the word 'Copernicus'. Nicolaus Copernicus was 15-16th century astronomer who famously formed the first heliocentric model of our solar system. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolaus_Copernicus

ETA: Paul Kings second album was called Houdinis Moon. Razz

ETA again: Doh! hi mid monotonous cod anagrams into houdinis moon dot com.

Wow, a lot happens when you go to bed early. First, I see that 401WTF found the buriedintheground.com site before the show mentioned it. Was this what we were supposed to guess from the clues presented on magicstomach? If so, that's not a good sign. That would basically be a WAG. Every step in this puzzle trail this then has been a solid connection to the next. Makes me nervous about the future of this game.

On buriedintheground.com, I can't get the video to come up. It seems as if all of blip.tv is down right now. So I can't really comment until that comes back up. The one thing that has me scratching my head is that I saw the timer on the site late yesterday when it was still up. It was called finalcountdown.swf or some such thing. If you search Google, the only thing that comes up for that file name are sites related to 401. They were using Google analytics to track views to the page, so why didn't Google index the page? If they had done that, we could have found buriedintheground.com long ago using a simple search. I'm not saying that has anything to do with the game itself, but its just weird.

On houdinismoon.com, sitilhpytipe ... I know someone at 401WTF said its a medical term for appendicitis, but that's entirely not true. Epityphlitis is the another term for apendicitis and that just happens to be what you get if you reverse the letters. I'd still prefer if it were an anagram, because then we get such colorful solutions like "elitist hippie" and my favorite "shitty lip pie". Without being able to watch the video, there isn't much else I can gather from this page except for one detail on gameplay mechanics. If you look carefully at the meta data left by Photoshop for the moon picture, you'll see it was last edited on 8-14 at about 2:30pm. This means that there wasn't really any clue on this page until just before the show aired. This is telling in that it shows we may not be able advance to the next site, no matter what we do. If that's the case, I have to wonder why bother? I understand if they want to tell an episodic story, that's fine. Why mask it in riddles then? If this is supposed to be more of a puzzle trail, why not flesh out the entire trail and leave it to players to advance at their own pace?

If you hadn't heard it for yourself yet, the two bits of reverse audio in the video are "This might help you see better" and "Watch me cheat death, but not my own". Sorry, for some reason I couldn't get to blip.tv all day.

Edit : Couple more things. One, this was a rather expensive video to produce. The fact that its running at film rate mean this probably cost more to produce than some of the segments of 401 itself. Second a close up of the thingy floating in the water for your viewing enjoyment.

It seems as if the game might change in the next episode. If you move your system timer forward, the clock will expire. The only thing it says when time is up is "Now!". Something that's timing based perhaps? Could we be at the end here?

Score one for me! I know where the next 401 site is already and its just gone live.

Proof you say? This time when you set your system clock ahead to get the timer to zero out, you are greeted with the message :

"You gotta really wait til the timer runs out! =P"

Edit : Also, why is this hand drawn Houdini so damn hairy? It must have taken a considerable amount of time to draw in all that leg fur.

Really? I don't have the administrative priviledges to eff with my system clock (Hence, the reason why it's always an hour late -.-) but if the 401 team really had the guts to put that there...

I'll have lol'd.

That Houdini is one hairy guy Shocked Monkey legs. Ook ook!

I kept my hopes up for this one, but it doesn't seem like it will amount to anything. Now that the show might not make it to a second season I guess there wont be much need for marketing either.. Sad, I believed in the theme. Just not the lack of story, puzzles or well.. anything really.

Since its not terribly obvious, on the first site, you need to help Houdini. To do so, there is a brown text box where you have to enter a password. Getting the correct password leads you to the next site with the timer. Get it wrong and Houdini drowns.

Edit : FYI to the 401 PM if you're reading this. The page with the interactive text box doesn't work properly in IE7 / WinXP SP 2. You just get a white screen. Works fine under FF on Ubunutu 7.07
