First file is easy.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

This is more of a TimeWaster than a trailhead. Got the first part easily, but I have no idea what he's asking for after that.

7za is a zip archive format. Below the hidden message in the first file there's a 7z.... then code. I'm not sure what to do with it, but it's definitely a hidden archive.

VIM

If it has anything to do with the VIM described online, I am afraid it is too hard for me - it says it is a tool that has to be learned, and some kind of text editor.

VIM is the clue for the first stage. VIM, I think, is a pretty bog-standard Linux text editor. So... open up the owl photograph with notepad and scroll to the bottom. You'll see the next clue.
