lmao - talk about ironic - giant eagle rips the head off SOL. Gotta love it.
However, kinda hard to get away with saying what a bird would or wouldn't do when discussing a giant huge alive monstrous creature laying waste to NYC....the fact it's fiction gives more room for making allowances on its abilities....and it'd depend on the bird...it could be a prehistoric thing and then they can make it look however they want. Then too, if it's slusho toxic driven, no telling what (else) it's capable of doing.
I'm just sayin
A giant bald eagle... how do you get more American?

MmmHmmm... The Bald Eagle vs. The SOL. Sounds like social commentary to me... Two party system anyone?
uh...yea...I doubt it's a bird, but nothing stops it from having wings as far as we know...

Howver how does that explain the water trail from the statue of libery, and how does it explain how the head was thrown? hmm -_-
An object of significant mass, moving at high speeds could leave a wake in the water as it flew by.

A giant bald eagle with a southern drawl, a flag bandana, with an apple pie on it's back.

Hmmm... the Roc is similar to the Native American Thunderbird.

And Roc books is a subsidiary of Penguin Publishing ... coincidence?

I think you may BE on to something...I'm not mad at ya for speculating. And nothing monsterwise has really grabbed me. I haven't really been satisfied with what would make the claw marks in the buildings and sol, but a flying thingcould rip off the head and carry/launch it. It needs to swim tho,k and traverse on the ground too.
There's this: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/07/31/eveningnews/main566138.shtml .
And there's the duck on the history page at Slusho.jp.
And there's the wake in the water from an aquatic creature.
And there's the shape of the damage to the buildings where the monster entered the city--decidedly bottom heavy.
It seems clear that New York will be attacked by...a giant rubber duck.

Unfortunately, millions of Americans wont have any idea what the hell a roc (giant bird) is.
"What's the movie about?"
"A rock attacks New York.
"A rock?"
"Yes, a rock."
"Igneous?"
"No, it's either metamorphic or sedimentary. I don't remember."
"It's just a rock?"
"Well, it can fly, I think. And maybe breath fire. I dunno. You gonna see it?"
"No."
"Me neither."
"Well, it just sounds..."
"Stupid?"
"Yeah, that's the word. Stupid."
And thus, "Attack of the Mutant Roc from Space" is a flop, while "Godzilla Super Ultra Huge Mega Happy Fun Time Final Doom Battle" is a huge success in Japan.

I'm sure this is some sort of land dwelling creature, a bird would not just attack in a straight line as indicated by the arrow, it would be much more sparatic, chances are the bird would attack more from the air where is most comfortable, I cant see an eagle landing and attacking straight path into a city, doesn't seem logical..
Second, notice the claw marks circled, 3 claws, I'm not sure how a bird would manage to get those there and not leave the back talon mark, it looks much more in proportian with some sort of dinosaur like being, mid way up are the arms. Thirdly the boxed portion looks to be where the head smashed the side.
Just thoughts..
I think we need to step out of the realm of looking in the poster for clues and just take a break while the next hint is being created by Abrams. Movie posters are given to designers with the order "make it look cool. It's a movie about monsters in New York. Take it and run, homeboy."
In other words, the poster is just the end result of a cool designer that came up with a cool image of what he believes NYC would look like if it was attacked by his own personal image of a giant monster. That's it.

I dunno, I'm sure JJ does review most things to do with this movie and I believe that he has a large hand in most things to do with the movie.
Since it seems like they are REALLY pushing hard on the viral marketing of this movie, I somehow doubt they would allow a designer to "run away" with the poster design.
Anyway, with those claw marks I'm beginning to think this is Jurassic Park XXXVIII: Giant Velociraptor vs. Macy's Day Parade . . .

I concur, although you might want to toss Jar Jar Binks in there so we can include another sequel to another series of movies that went on for way too long.

Right or wrong, it's still fun to speculate! Any any rate, the real point of my post was supposed to be, where would a giant bird come from? Does it have a giant nest on the top of Mount Everest or something? I think it makes more sense for a giant creature to come out of the deep ocean or outer space. Otherwise, we would have "normal", everyday creatures eating Slusho! (or something) and then becoming very large. At which point, the moviemakers would also have to explain how only one (or two or three) of the creatures were affected, because when birds find a food source, there's usually a whole flock of them!
The connection between Penguin Publishing and its subsidiary Roc books is interesting, though (thanks kevrock!). I wonder why they are referencing a real company. That's pretty unusual.
