Puzzle #3 - Mayan Numerals

Ok, so it looks like these are Mayan numerals. Nakwatcha and I did the math and determined the number sequence to be, from left to right:

top row: 16 53 15
bottom row: 30 44 12

Sources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_numerals and http://www.michielb.nl/maya/math.html

It also includes three instances of the Mayan glyph known as Lamat, according to Famsi (http://www.famsi.org/mayawriting/dictionary/montgomery/l/t510.htm):

Quote:
LAMAT (Lamat) (T510) > n. day sign; eighth day of the Maya Tzolk'in calendar; the symbol for "star" or EK', within a cartouche.

What's it mean?

Lat/Longs?

I took the number sequence:
16 53 15
30 44 12

and when you take the little "minus" symbol on the puzzle image into account for the bottom row, it looked suspiciously like latitude/longitude coordinates....

Plugged them into Mapquest Lat/Long lookup (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/latlong.adp)and came up with a location smack in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean....

I think that's the location for Atlantis!

Way to go. I thought it looked like the long count for the calendar but none of those numbers are to go above 19 so I knew that wasn't it. I even tried IP. Next guess was map but didn't know how to write it in. GOOD JOB!

Location: Where the cheese is free.

Anybody running Audacity. It's one of the things I still need to install after a hard drive crash and will take a while on this connection.

In MS Sound Recorder, the background sound has a pulsing modulation that looks like it might be Morse, binary or another form of on/off code.

Next step?

If this *is* the location for Atlantis, what are we supposed to do with that knowledge? And what do the three Lamat symbols mean? It must mean something that there's three of them....

Sounds like crickets to me. Smile

It may sound like crickets. But it doesn't look like it . Wink
And not that it makes a bit of difference with what we think we know so far, but, in case it makes a difference, later, we sould consider that the coordinate info could be in decimal format and not degree format.
That puts the location very near the other spot, but still in the middle of the ocean.
Map of Latitude: 16.5315 Longitude: -30.4412

I thought I posted this already but for some reason it isn't here. Anyway, when I plugged in the coordinates, I got a location in the Sudan near Khartum. This was once part of ancient egypt. This seems to make more sense with the story than Atlantis right now but perhaps I'm wrong.

I got the same location and so I started looking up African masks, but found nothing in a style that resembled the one pictured. Using an alternative method, I took the first six digits as a whole and subtracting the second set of six came up with -139097. If you plug that number into Google Earth, you get Lawrence, Kansas, which, among other things, is home to the University of Kansas. I thought perhaps that might be on Forrest's book signing tour, but it is not.

The lamat image is called "hint.gif". Perhaps not important, but it's not centered below the main image.

Tochtli or Rabbit is the eighth day sign in the Tonalpohualli - the Aztec calendar. Rabbit's significance at Teotihuacan is that the equivalent glyph in the Dresden Codex represents Venus (Lamat interpreted as star).

The Dresden Codex taken from Chichen Itza in the Yucatan was a Venus center, and Venus held the equivalent position at Chichen Itza that the moon did at Teotihuacan.

Venus was the most important astronomical object to the Maya, even more important to them than the sun. The Venus cycle was especially important because the Maya believed it was associated with war and used it to divine appropriate times for coronations and war. Maya rulers planned for wars to begin when Venus rose.

Lamat is the 8th day sign, and means star, or more specifically, Venus. So could the 'hint' have something to do with 8, star or Venus?

This is gonna sound really stupid but have we we solved the first two puzzles yet? I'm quietly following along, but can't find the concrete solutions in either thread...

Yes, the first two puzzles were solved. The first one, which has the jigsaw puzzle pointed us to Lien Meihui (who had a Myspace page stating she worked for the Hung Society). Nbnewell figured out that the picture of the temple roof with tall building in the background was the Taipei 101 building. This led Christopher to Taipei where he received an envelope with puzzle #2. I managed to figure out puzzle #2. The solution is here: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=20520&start=30
This led Christopher to the Qian Tomb which was a day's hike outside of Xian City in China. If you visit: http://chrisforrest.livejournal.com/ You will read Christopher's responses to the solved puzzles.

Thank you, Cronkie, for not making me feel stupid for asking. And I did see those solutions, just didn't follow the links out to understand them completely. Lesson learned...thx again!

Both interesting ideas... though personally I'm going to stick with Nakwatcha's Atlantis suggestion given the Maya-Atlantis link... any bets on whether the Crystal Skull (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_skull) will show up somewhere?
