I think it's great that PMs target a broader audience than just Unfiction, we're not the only group of people out there interested in mysteries and intrigue you know.

And I'm guessing Rushkoff simply googled "Tom Tooman", as the first two hits are Despoiler and this very thread on Unfiction... don't be overly suspicious guys Smile

Welcome to Unfiction btw Rushkoff! Good to see more people are being dragged in by mysterious Mr. Tooman...

I don't get it. Why would someone promoting this ARG send a letter to someone who isn't even affiliated with Unfiction?

Rushkoff, do you run a website promoting ARGs? Maybe this person is trying to promote the game through many different ARG outlets.

Edit: And, how would you even know to come to the Unfiction forums to say you got a letter in the first place?

Jubilus- the only connection so far is that Mr. Rushkoff here wrote an article on viral marketing, as gcdoa noted. I almost overlooked it too Wink

As far as how would be know to come here? I'm sure a google search for "tom tooman letter" brings back unFiction REEEEAL fast. Smile

I'm fairly certain that that clue was supposed to point us to clicking on the eyes of the Mayan glyph (leading us to the map). What's mssng -> i's -> eyes, so I'm not sure we should look into that too much anymore.

Who else has received the physical letter? And what do we have in common?

I am: http://www.rushkoff.com

Reading your bio, Mr. Rushkoff, I am not at all surprised that you got a letter. You seem to be heavily involved with "new media and popular culture" (quoted from your bio). It seems to me that a puppet master behind an ARG could "target" someone like you, possibly getting you involved in his game, and maybe making it the subject of your next book?
On the other hand, it could very well be something much less nefarious. He/she/they could possibly just assume that you would be more likely to google this name and come across Unfiction than someone who has no interest in new advertising methods.

hostile much?

guys... no need to get hostile or paranoid... perhaps mr. rushkoff knows more, perhaps not... i'm willing to bet a dollar that the PM knows him (more than just say, finding his name/addy in the back of a book), but that doesnt necessarily mean he knows the pm.
if he has not received a packet, perhaps he is doing research for an updated book on viral marketing and its methods, but theres no need to start acting like a pack of paranoid geek L33T H4Xs.

Re: hostile much?

I wouldn't say paranoid or hostile. This trail has already been jack attempted(philoshipher) and we're taking nothing at face value. Secondly, I just read Het's post as giving reason why this guy was picked instead of some nobody. It's all good. The second Doug emailed me back to say he'd post scans soon, I knew we could trust him. I live by the thought of trust a man after he's earned rather than before. Less gamejacks this way. Smile

The Rushkoff link given is down. The Whois info show it registered to Daniel Rushkoff. His wiki entry does not list the rushkoff.com site, but lists a blog, which is also down. This guy has very high visibility in the media/tech culture; his identity would be a very attractive one to assume for a game jacker, but he'd alos be the kind of person a PM would want to draw into his or her story. Both scenarios are equally likely. The whois registrant's email address is rushkoffSPLATwell.com, if anyone wants to try and verify.

His input and even passing involvement might be of great interest if it is actually him.

Zizka, I can't verify anything in your post. I get registrant Douglas Rushkoff, I get the website listed in the wiki as rushkoff.com/blog, which is still rushkoff. Are you sure we're talking about the same site?

As of 1 PM EST, Rushkoff is back up. I can say the whois info says the site has been up since 99, and that I emailed him at the address listed on his site- rushkoffSPLATrushkoff.com. I got a response saying he'd post them as soon as he could, of course, being as he teaches a course at NYU, that may be a little while. I still think he's legit, I'm not worried about it. Yet. Smile

Hmmm, a prof at NYU eh? could it be that one of his students is the PM. Some students may have a course load that would expose them to both technology classes like web design and what not as well as Mayan culture, and mid west history. Maybe this guy is our next clue?

Good thought. I have 2 problems with this, but God knows I've been wrong before.

His class he teaches is in Interactive Telecommunications. I personally don't see this tying in.

2nd, using this guy as a clue wouldn't tie in to the story well- it'd be vastly different from the way the rest of the game has gone so far. Plus, I'd imagine he'd have a hard time finding time to work with our game. Good thinking, though Smile

Is it me, or is the map flash going faster all of a sudden?

Think it's just you. The clouds are a script in the flash, and I don't think it's been changed.

we're on the same page. I inadvertantly said "daniel" when I meant "douglas."

The important thing is that who he is makes either a game jack *or* a PM sending him the letter equally likely. If it is really him, he may not be checking back with the UF boards; contacting him via his site/email may be the best way to verify. I'd be inclined to believe the PM cast his net wider than the UF community in seeding the game, but if the unregistered Rushkoff starts alleging he has unique information, of course you'd want some verification.

Of course, there's nothing to say that the real Douglas Rushkoff can't jack the game Wink
