Unless you misunderstood what he meant by University. University is the place you go after you complete your school training. Most likely being a three-four year course in specific subjects related to a degree.

As far as I know, this is the same in the states as it is here in aus. Having said that, I have heard college being used in the same context.

Over here you have High-school (Yr7-10), College (Yr11-12) then university if you're so inclined.

Generally in America we use college interchangably with university, though university is generally a more "advanced" term (for lack of a better word). College is anything from the community college down the road to an Ivy league school. as in "I'm going to college" where as we refer to University as "I'm going to (insert name) university next semester. That said College here generally means any 2-4 year school with university being a 4-8 year school depending on what degree you're aiming for.

Generally speaking most Americans I've spoken with, would say "Is that being taught in college now", where as those that that I've spoken with that speak the kings english would say "Is that being taught in university now"

Most colleges have now being re-branded as university colleges, in the UK if you say you going to college it means you have finished your formal schooling (age 5 - 16) and decide on the route of further education (age 16- 18 ).

Of course if go on to study for a degree, you could choose to go to the same university college, but you would be going to university not college Wink

- And thus the indication that the writer is NOT an American, who is lazy and apt to generalize everything. Anything beyond high school for us is enerically called "college". Use of University is very specific, as in "at THE University" or in proper names as "the University of Life" or "Cornell University". We also don't value or measure people by the grade level achieved beyond the 12th grade (even then we call them Seniors, not high schoolers (rare) nor 12th graders (super-rare)), as eveything afterwards is measured by degree finished - "some graduate work" means you don't finish what you start (on job interviews), where listing an MBA, MS, or PhD does.

- The response to the SOTA thing is geared towards blatantly linking IRIS to this set of pages, so that the uninitiated can enter the "game" at this point. This is to further help indicate the Stephen Hawkings book is OOG.

- As for Jonas, I think he's a forerunner who was given one of the first x-box 360s (probably by the Evil AR), with a copy of Halo2 and has been playing ever since - an attempt to make him rethink the Halo solution. Thus the reason for his absence. Either that or he's stuck in Kenya, looking for the doggie door to the Ark.

Also, the first comment on the book about chapter 7, and it mentioning the "Song of Roland" which is about the ambush or battle of Roncevaux Pass on August 15, 778...also in one of the posts on the books forum, someone mentions a holiday that appears to be related to amelia earheart that takes place on august 15.

Perhaps we shouldn't throw the person who made the first comment out completely as being OOG simply because the book doesn't have a chapter 7.

7 is a recurring bungie number after all.

This raised my eyebrows a degree or so. A search on google reveals that there is a castaway theory about Emilia Earhart, that she died stranded on a dessert island. If there really is a holiday about Emilia, perhaps this is a clue to the next server opening date, August 15th?

Would it mean anything useful? Also, he spelled compelling with 3 l's.

I am embarrassed about the "compellling" error. But that review is mine. I post over at ABO and was trying to prove to someone that, yes, anyone can post a review of the book (i.e., they are not in-game). I'd hoped that using my screen name, claiming I was lived on "High Charity," and awkwardly inserting key words like "lunatic" (moon reference), "sloppy" (well, a little jooke for myself, as this is my favorite word for describing this game), "reclaim," and "forerunner," I'd make it rather obvious to anyone that I was playing the game. The attempt appears to have backfired. My apologies, but the reviews are not in-game and you can safely ignore them.

chiming in: In Canada we have both college and university - very different things, equally used terms, not used interchangeably. In my area alone there are 2 universities, and numerous colleges. Going to college is very different from going to university, and we don't say (name) university unless there's a distinction to be made between them... a student goes to college or university. AFAIK there are universities, as opposed to colleges in the US, but college is definitely the more common institute.

I don't think his use of the term "university" in this case is anywhere near sufficient to determine where he's located...

Im in Canada and we use them separately. We use university describing a whole campus, like "University or Toronto". A college is referring to the various departments, like "College of Arts and Science" or "College of Engineering"

Also, the title The Castaway Theory... sure does seem like a nod to ILB in the fact that The Castaway was what Durga/Melissa called Jersey's father.

This is what I thought of right away as well. But I might have only thought of it because the story about him had one of the best lines:

Quote:
The weather was stormy, scratched vinyl and
all of us, a long way from home: I felt real.

Maybe I should quote the whole thing:

Quote:
"Humor me," the Castaway said, playing
music in his room, ancient music, Jazz and Swing,
all in the mood. "Melissa", he said, "Have a drink with me".
I don't drink, but I asked for something anyway and sat,
holographically, and drank with him. He wasn't
regular crew, just along for the ride. We picked him up in
deep space, where he deployed Buoys, sending out waves of sound
to confuse the Enemy. A man that
seemed noble, classical and pure. A sailor with
Odysseus. He told stories about soldiers caught
waist deep in water, facing the enemy, their backs to
the Sea. "Melissa", he called me Melissa, never
used my nickname, "It's a sad thing I'm married,
You could break my heart". The weather was stormy, scratched vinyl and
all of us, a long way from home: I felt real.

from the fireflies wiki

What can I say, this started with poetry. I start thinking of some other very fine writing. Smile

Likelihood of relevance to Iris? Low, probably.

Oh, I've been playing Marathon, and I think that I conclusively linked this ARG with it I didn't get it till now because its such an obscure reference, but in the game there is a part of the "song of rolland" heres a screen shot:

I don't think this is a co-incidence

It looks more and more like Marathon and Halo are connected.

and as I said before:

This book is a real mind-bender! It proposes a new way to look at humanity's evolution (I won't spoil it for you). Check this book out, and make sure to spend extra time reading chapter 7... it contains an excellent interpretation of the medieval classic "Song of Roland."

Thomas Sanatos just created a topic on the Amazon forums:

Thomas Sanatos wrote:

I understand that everyone is on a search of some kind, but I don't think I can help you.

Jonas was the one with the theories and answers. The rest of us were just sounding boards for possible solutions. We were the ones who told him no every time he thought he found a yes. If he was around, I am sure he could tell you what you want to know.

The process of my involvement was simple-
Jonas would work non-stop for about a week before dropping by my office. If I had the time, he would sit for a cup of coffee and ask questions about the structure of social advancement or evolutionary desires or any number of things. The questions always changed due to the fact that he was forever updating his theories.

During all our talks, Jonas and I grew close. He didn't have any family in the area so my wife and I started inviting him over for dinner on Sunday evenings. This continued for a few years, past the publishing of "The Castaway Theory", until one night he just didn't show up...

Two days later, after he failed to appear for classes, I filed a police report. The investigators went through his house and found nothing out of place. His notes remained untouched; his clothes all seemed to be in his closet. There was even a sandwich sitting on the kitchen counter. It was as if he just opened the front door walked away. That was 20 months ago.

The last time I heard from Jonas was in a note he left on my desk the Friday before his disappearance. The note said, "It's time to start asking questions again. J"

I was about to post thomas' latest topic but you beat me.

Anyway, this does not give us much to go on except possibly the police report that was filed. I wonder if we could get a copy of that some how?

Failing that perhaps more interaction with Thomas will bring something to light.

Perhaps we should put out a missing ad for Jonas, or create a site to lure him back into society, unless we're specifically given a trailhead.
