They're not THAT hip. I think they're just extra-stylized singles in their mid-twenties in NY. They seem kinda normal for that environment.
...and Beth is adorable, I'd kinda like her to stick around.

I like the idea that the MySpace pages give us a look into Rob & Co. ("The Slusho Seven") lives. I think it furthers the idea that the movie's name IS 1-18-08, because that date becomes this huge thing in all of their lives. The pages are too legit to be OOG. Still curious about the still-locked robbyhawkins photobucket though.

I bet she and Rob stick it out to the end for a sunset make out scene to the backdrop of NY being repaired (remember when I said this. I'm pretty sure that'll happen).

PS: I love your avatar. Wonder Showzen is da bomb!

The character development aspect of myspace was predicted some time ago by (ahem)....somebody...and was prematurely shot down. That said, I'm not sure why there's a debate about the pages being IG or OOG when there's still no real game that I can see at this stage. It's very clever viral marketing, and it's a clever way to do character development, but it's not a game--not yet anyway. This technique would never be successful on a movie that doesn't have a built-in geek fanbase, so whether this marks the future of movies is doubtful. While the idea is interesting, I think it could just as easily be the death of the film. After all, if the movie doesn't "kick some serious ass," then it's all a big timewaster for everyone.

What's particularly dangerous for the film is the character development so far. It seems that most of the people involved in whatever this thing is find the trendy hipsters believable, and therefore unappealing. Most people into this sort of thing (i.e., ARGs, monster movies, etc.) tend to be the opposite of what these characters seem to represent (even Hawk is more of a fratboy than a true comic fan). This may be an unintended result, and how Bad Robot deals with this may be the most interesting part of the phenomenon.

If it's intended that we don't like them, then they're doing a good job--other than the fact that they're reasonably attractive, just about everyone already seems to hate them. Like many, I am already rooting for the monster to squish these creeps (including Hawk and Rob), so the "sympathy for the monster" ingredient necessary for almost any good monster flick is already taken care of.

P.S. I don't think Rob and Beth get together between now and then, or if they do, it doesn't go anywhere. "Rob, Have fun in Japan" isn't exactly a heartfelt response to your lover leaving the country.

I agree; it's amazing how much a giant lion can make you want to get it on with "that one guy who's going to Japan."

I'm pretty sure the movie will have enough character development to get by, but I have a feeling the bulk of this ARG will end up as bonus material on the DVD (which, according to recently acquired clues, might contain an alternate ending as well). Character myspace pages and significant blog entries will probably be included, as well as any video clip we might get (fingers crossed). Probably the pictures from 1-18-08.com too...

While I don't actually agree that the clues you're speaking of are valid, it is worth noting that easily half of the movies made shoot alternate endings. Sometimes you want to try out different responses with an audience and see what you get. Sometimes you actually go back and RE-shoot stuff after it has a bad screening.

So I don't think alternate endings necessarily are that unusual--and while they sometimes end up on the DVD, they just as often do not.

As for the film being completely watchable for anyone who hasn't 'interacted' with the MySpace profiles, have no fear.

The vast majority of the world DOESN'T interact with MySpace. The film is intended for the world...not us crazy Internet folk.
