Gaia

They're on now, but I've got to go to sleep. I'm beat. If you go to puzzles, connect to the Gunny (or whatever) server, you'll see which room you need to be in.

We know who M.L. is now.... sort of. During the puzzle chat, Brent received an email from her and forwarded it to some of us:

Subject: Revelation

Brenton (And friends);

So, you have decoded my message. I see you know how to navigate the extensive network of resources available to you, as well as solve intricate puzzles. Bravo. Yes - the Stregha, Italian witches, are somewhat unrelated to the French theme of all of your current knowledge. But that is what I am here for - to remove you from your current reality, and bring you into a larger one.

I'm Matron Lamia. That's all you will need to know me as.
go to geocitiesdotcomslashmatronlamia for more information, children.

If you paid close attention, you will see that I mentioned you were going somewhere. To Italy, in fact.

It is my belief that, from what I have gleaned from your account of these mysterious clues, your Bergie was a Basque witch. They fled all throughout Europe - many to Italy. I will contact you soon when I find new information.

I am here to help you. If you want to know why, follow the naga's tale. She will tell you my story.

~M.L.
Matron Lamia

P.S. - Yes, I am watching your friends and their progress as well. You can't see me, but I'll be there. Every move you make, I'll be watching. It's what I do, after all.

Oh! That URL just popped up when I copied and pasted - it was written in white! (I feel like I should spoiler this, but the email was a limited thing Confused )

Anyway, Brent was really creeped out by the whole thing. He kept asking how she could have found him, and how she could be watching us. (I'll go through the transcript later for any direct quotes.)

I'm going to check out that site now!

EDIT: From the puzzle chat (I got in late, I don't know what I missed):

Quote:
Brent Ambroise: one sec okay?
Brent Ambroise: Lurker....
Brent Ambroise: You obvioiusly arent the only stalker...
Embee Twelve: ???
Brent Ambroise: You're being watched..?
Brent Ambroise: Do you know a Matron Lamia?
ForumLurker: what are you talking about?
Brent Ambroise: Just answer me!
ForumLurker: no?
ForumLurker: I am far from the only person to use this name...
Embee Twelve: (lamia? like the nymph-like thingy?)
Brent Ambroise: ....You're being watched...
ForumLurker: good...
ForumLurker: *struts it*
Brent Ambroise: ....
Brent Ambroise: this might not be a good thing
Brent Ambroise: got an e-mail back.
Brent Ambroise: Matron Lamia...M.L...
Brent Ambroise: not one of you right?
ForumLurker: hrm
Embee Twelve: not as far as i know >_>
ForumLurker: I'm being watched? or You are?
Brent Ambroise: Both of us, apparently
Brent Ambroise: P.S. - Yes, I am watching your friends and their progress as well.
Brent Ambroise: ....umm..
ForumLurker: oh goody... spectators
Brent Ambroise: This email is creepy..
ForumLurker: can we get a copy of that e-mail?
Embee Twelve: *glancing at the window*
Brent Ambroise: Yeah...
...
Brent Ambroise: Ah
Brent Ambroise: what do you guys think?
Brent Ambroise: I'm creeped...
...
Embee Twelve: creepy or not... m. lamia sounds helpful
Brent Ambroise: ....how is she watching you i wonder.
Embee Twelve: for now. whatever her motives are.
Embee Twelve: maybe she's hacked my internet :/
Brent Ambroise: I dunno how exactly she found me in the first place
Brent Ambroise: Maybe...she doesnt sound like a hacker
Embee Twelve: do you think she's a witch herself?
Brent Ambroise: Witch? I dunno
Brent Ambroise: didnt think of that
Embee Twelve: i mean, if she's watching all of us, maybe she can scry or something
Brent Ambroise: Maybe
Brent Ambroise: Is she on the net at all?
Embee Twelve: huh?
Embee Twelve: you mean... besides sending emails?
Embee Twelve: google says she doesn't have a net *presence* under that name...
Brent Ambroise: no where?
Brent Ambroise: She's not anywhere else?
Brent Ambroise: ....dammit...
Brent Ambroise: I dunno who this person even is

And regarding http://geocities.com/matronlamia/

It seems that Matron Lamia is a theologian who practices tarot and scrying. (I think I may have been right about how she's watching all of us.) There's a poem on the page that may be significant:

Quote:
She was a gordian shape of dazzling hue,
Vermilion-spotted, golden, green, and blue;
Striped like a zebra, freckled like a pard,
Eyed like a peacock, and all crimson barr'd;
And full of silver moons, that, as she breathed,
Dissolv'd, or brighter shone, or interwreathed
Their lustres with the gloomier tapestries -
So rainbow-sided, touch'd with miseries,
She seem'd, at once, some penanced lady elf,
Some demon's mistress, or the demon's self.
Upon her crest she wore a wannish fire
Sprinkled with stars, like Ariadne's tiar:
Her head was serpent, but ah, bitter-sweet!
She had a woman's mouth with all its pearls complete:
And for her eyes: what could such eyes do there
But weep, and weep, that they were born so fair?
~Keats; Lamia pt. I

What I believe Twelve meant to write was:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
In the Source Code:

"SHEWASAGORDIANSHAPEOFDAZZLINGHUE"

"She was a gordian shape of dazzling hue"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamia_and_Other_Poems

Quote:
The creature, Lamia, herself is even described as an animal, with nature playing a large part in the description:

"Striped like a Zebra, freckled like a pard, / Eyed like a peacock".

Hence, like Frankenstein, nature plays a large part in "Lamia," but in slightly more supernatural sense. Not only is Lamia described as being connected with nature, but she is described as supernatural:

"She was a Gordian shape of dazzling hue",

She is composed of both mortal and immortal elements, which was unusual in literature at the time:

That appears to be part of an episode of Sailor Moon.

A naga is a snake-person. I've seen a couple tales in fantasy stories, that I assumed were variations on some common myth or tale, but I haven't found what I assumed existed (not immediately, anyway.)

Also, I told Brent on myspace about Matron Lamia's website. He replied:

Quote:
Looked at the site halfishly (falling asleep). She's a..tarot reader? Please don't tell me Cleo is coming for a personal visit. I just don't get how she found me. I talked to Eric (my friend who asked for an expert in witchcraft for me) and he's never heard of her. Is she hacking? She doesn't seem it but scrying...I've never actually looked into that. I dunno whether to think if she's a friend, though she did give me info about Bergie..

I just don't know what to think, I haven't even talked to her directly but I hope to soon. Sorry if I acted paranoid about her being you guys, she definitely beats you all out in the creep factor, even smooth.

yeah, I showed him the site earlier too, didnt get a chance to save the convo though, something came up oog.. hes creeped out by her, so I told him I would Email her and see what I could get out of her, he complied and thats pretty much it cuz i had to go..

UPDATE:

LOL Guys ..thanks to Britt pointing it out, I accidently posted this onto Adam Worsley's thread rather than on here...haha oh man..hey i was in a hurry!! Leave me alone Razz

I got a reply from Matron Lamia:

Quote:
Michael;

Perhaps you should read the tale of the Lamia. Perhaps, also, you should learn what her name, and mine, originally meant.

You've already figured out that the naga was half serpent, half woman. Perhaps nagas were also gordian shapes.

~Matron Lamia

well at least its something, I basically told her what we know about Nagas and asked to be pointed in the right direction, due to the multiple cultures that involve Nagas into their history...

BTW New Brent Blog Posting

Quote:
Matron Lamia.

I was just contacted by Matron Lamia, apparently she seems to be a friend. I'm going back to the journal later to see if I can find anything. Here's the convo:

-Brentdidntexpecthiskindofhelp

matronlamia: Hello, Brenton.
matronlamia: I believe we'll be having a chat later on this evening.
Brentinthetent: Matron Lamia?
Brentinthetent: How did you find me?
matronlamia: You've been asking for help in very public forums, haven't you?
Brentinthetent: Well, I've had to.
matronlamia: Anyone could have come upon your question. I happened to, and decided it would be worthwhile to help you.
Brentinthetent: You also know about my friends as well?
matronlamia: Well, yes. A quick search turned up many things.
matronlamia: I'm watching their progress, and yours. You seem to be doing well.
Brentinthetent: I try. So why did you feel you had to test me?
matronlamia: Sometimes, people are... clueless. It sounds harsh, but they can't help themselves.
matronlamia: I wanted to make sure you could.
Brentinthetent: Well, I've passed. I take it you're a friend right?
matronlamia: I suppose.
Brentinthetent: How do you plan on helping me then?
matronlamia: Did you see my website?
Brentinthetent: Yes, someone pointed it out. You hid it in the e-mail in white.
matronlamia: I did indeed.
matronlamia: On it, it says I'm a theologian. You know what that is, right?
Brentinthetent: You know a lot about different religions, I believe.
matronlamia: Yes.
matronlamia: I also study all of what is occult and metaphysical.
Brentinthetent: I see. So you would know who this Bergie was?
matronlamia: I could help you find out.
matronlamia: And I believe I can help you find out what her story was.
Brentinthetent: Why do you want to help me? For all you know, this could be one big goose chase.
matronlamia: I'm sure you'd learn something from it, though.
Brentinthetent: One big history lesson I suppose.
matronlamia: About history, or just about your family.
Brentinthetent: Why are you so interested Matron, what's in it for you?
matronlamia: Why do I have to have ulterior motives?
Brentinthetent: You don't, just there usually is.
matronlamia: This situation is entirely unusual.
Brentinthetent: Tell me about it.
Brentinthetent: Alright, Matron, thank you for your help.
Brentinthetent: Is there anything new you've found out?
matronlamia: I have reason to believe Bergie would have fled to Italy to seek out the Benandanti.
matronlamia: But I mentioned the Stregha because the Benandanti were persecuted during the Roman Inqusition much in the same manner as any witches - and, since Bergie obviously lived long enough to rear her son, I can only assume she assimilated into a faction of the Stregha.
Brentinthetent: Seems possible...
Brentinthetent: Strength in numbers it seems right?
matronlamia: Yes.
matronlamia: The Stregha who weren't caught by inquisitors would have been able to provide for her and her young child.
matronlamia: A coven is like family. They take care of their own.
Brentinthetent: Let me get this straight, she fled to Italy, seeking protection of the Benandanti and the Stregha to protect her and her son?
matronlamia: I assume she would have wanted to send her son into the Benandanti, because they were previously safe from the Catholic church - however, they were heretics during the Inquisition, which is when she arrived in Italy.
matronlamia: They were no longer an option, so she must have went to the Stregha for protection.
Brentinthetent: I see.
matronlamia: Perhaps you should check your great aunt's book for mention of the Italian witches - until I know more, I won't be able to figure out where Bergie went next.
Brentinthetent: Alright, I tried to read more but a lot of it is in different codes and such.
matronlamia: If you find something relevant, take a picture of whatever you find.
Brentinthetent: Should I send it to you?
matronlamia: Put it in your journal.
matronlamia: I'll find it.
Brentinthetent: Alright. I can do that.
Brentinthetent: My friends should be able to help me out too.
matronlamia: Yes.
matronlamia: They seem easily distracted, but they have skills.
Brentinthetent: More than me, distracted or no.
matronlamia: You're learning.
Brentinthetent: It's what I'll have to do if I want to find this treasure right?
matronlamia: Yes.
matronlamia: Although I don't know if it's a treasue in the common sense of the word...
matronlamia: But again, what do I know currently. Little more than you do.
Brentinthetent: We'll find out. Thanks, Matron.
matronlamia: Of course. I'll contact you soon.

closest thing I have found thus far on lamia

http://www.bookrags.com/wiki/Lamiak

EDIT:http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/basque/lbp/lbp10.htm#fn_17

Footnote at bottom of page---Lamia. The Basque water-nymph, or mermaid.

EDIT:http://alkman1.blogspot.com/2007/07/subterranean-mythology-and-primordial.html

all is interesting but this is what caught my eye

Quote:
The Lamie or Laminak have a particular importance. They are genies with a human shape although they have chicken, duck or goat feet.
In the coastal areas they are women with the lower part of their bodies in the shape of a fish. They are not of a specific sex, although they are mostly female genies. Some legends describe them as small people that live underground.
Caves are their dwellings but they can also live near puddles and river pools. They are in the habit of spinning with a spindle and a distaff, of building bridges, dolmen and houses.

Lamies often appear with a golden comb, they willingly accept offerings left by men on the window sill of houses; they fall in love and are loved by human beings. If people enter per chance in their dwellings they greet them kindly unless they are intrusive. In that case they abduct them.
The duplicity of their nature is obvious. They can be beneficiary or malevolent.
They can become extremely violent with those they abduct. They can drink their blood and also eat the flesh of their victims.
The cycle of the Lamies has many links with that of the witches or that of the Gentiles.

Lamia

Been lurking this for a while... Hope you'll allow my humble input Worshippy

I think Lamia was used by both the Basque ppl... and again (in a different context) in Greek mythology.

Basically I think staryangel is right about the Basque sea-nymph, mermaid. Wink

In Greek tho...
http://www.theoi.com/Ther/Lamia.html
and..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamia_%28mythology%29

Two translations for the name:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1. large shark
2. from the Greek laimos meaning "gullet"

Of all the interpretations, this one seems the most relevent for two reasons which I will tell you after you read this excerpt from wikipedia (and i realize the Lamiak has already been mentioned but I wanted to specifically show the paragraph..)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamiak

Quote:
Lamiak (sing.: lamia), also called laminak (sing. lamin). In Basque mythology are creatures with bird-like feet that dwell in rivers and springs. They are easily comparable with Greco-Roman nymphs. Normally female, they are usually portrayed with a golden comb, that often attracts the unmeasured ambition of some ill-fated peasant.

In one, more romantic, legend the peasant happens to fall in love with the lamia but, after discovering her nature decides to abandon her, dying soon after. The lamia goes to the funeral but remains outside the church.

There is also another saying that the lamia is a man that walks around after dark with an old cane and beats children that aren't in by their curfew. This is one to scare little kids.

OK my reasons now.

1.) First and foremost, the BASQUE. Its blatantly thrown in our face by the Matron, so therefore why wouldnt we look into the basque mythology and find Lamiak (plural) Lamia (singular)?

2.) Secondly, the mentioning at the end about scaring children.. in the hidden message in the email that was sent to Brent by the Matron, the hidden message said:

Quote:
go to geocitiesdotcomslashmatronlamia for more information, children.

CHILDREN being the operative word. I believe this is what the Matron was refering to when she told me to find out what her name meant.

Apparently, the next step is to find out what is meant by the statement:

Perhaps Nagas were also gordian shapes...

I'll work on that right now..

UGH: Honestly, I have looked everywhere and I still cannot find out what "Gordian Shape" means... I found Gordian 1 (a roman emperor), a Gordian Knot (Alexander the Great myth, that doesnt relate to a "shape")... thats it... anyone else have any luck?
