I just assumed when I heard gordian that it was referring to Alexander's Knot. Perhaps a gordian shape is rope-like? You know, like to FORM the knot? Or maybe round like a great big knot, but I'm leaning toward the former because of the description of the lamia.

Benandanti

The Benandanti, mentioned by Matron Lamia in her conversation with Brent, appear to be a group of "good" witches in Italy who protected people from "bad" Strega, also known as Malandanti. Initially they were treated as allies by the inquisition in their quest to wipe out witches, but as time worn on they were treated with more and more hostility for the crime of "heresy". A historian called Carlo Ginzburg seems to be the main authority on the subject. More at:

u know what, now that you say it like that, it sounds right that its the knot.. a snake would obviously have a rope-like body.

but where to from here? thats the question I originally asked Matron.

Considering Rowling's naming habits, I doubt that's a coincidence. Razz

In modern Greek folk tales, Lamia is an ogress similar to Baba-Yaga. She lives in a remote house or tower. She eats human flesh and has magical abilities, keeps magical objects or knows information crucial to the hero of the tale's quest. The hero must avoid her, trick her or gain her favour in order to obtain one of those. In some tales, the lamia has a daughter who is also a magician and helps the hero, eventually falling in love with him.

Rowling's a genius, seriously. I didn't mean a coincidence that she named Nagini so, I meant that we'd run into it here. Okay, more of a neat connection than a coincidence.

New Myspace post from Brent:

Quote:
Hey Guys:

I was looking through the journal and and I found a note from Aunty in it. Pop is using the printer and laptop for his office work but I typed it up and I tell you, it took a hell of a lot to do but here it is:

Oh, at past this point all the words are my aunt's to avoid confusion.

-Brentistryingtounderstandallthis

This is just the beginning.
Another spot, another time.
Bergie, our bloodline.
It is not secret.

Our treasure is sought after.
Our only hope is to find what she left for us.
"Learn magic, for it is the only truth of this reality. Become magic, and you will become the essence of that truth." is what I've been taught.
Years, generations of the Ambroise line called stregoneria.

Healers said to curse the sick,
Rituals said to strike the innocent.
Elena Crusichi arrested and tried,
Later died.

Where is it?
Where is our prize?
Could it be?

---

Start here. The rest contained in this journal will be my steps, each one closer to where the truth might be. This is the first clue she left - I cannot decode but some of it. Perhaps another in our line will have more luck than I...

If it is any help, the text says "It is four
for you
we will decrypt together
you and I"

I believe the rest of the text is also in french, but I cannot unscramble it. I will place the rest of the clues in this journal, with any of my thoughts.

My father said something about Rome - that is all we know so far. Most of our information was lost. This clue has something to do with Rome...

Anyone like scrambled French? Very Happy

Yes I got that.. I meant the second part. Cool Gotta find the keyword, its a Vigenere cipher, or at least I think it is. Its most likely in that short poem type thing. Four stands out because there is two of them, but four.. four of what?

Message deciphered

EDIT: corrected accents and Babelfish translation.

I think that the latest message says:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

The code was a railfence cipher with 4 rails.

Anyone fluent in French?

Babelfish gives:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I leave these indices for you, my son we run together over the continents. I am sorry that I am not a good mother for you, I am sorry that we are continued by these unknown with our ways our family foreign granted on us a gift blessed by husband, but I cannot keep it now sure you will dare with the holy catacombs first, find the direction next in these walls. I you that you need to find it when you is ready it is special, as you are, with me I love you. I am sorry.

Excellent solve. Did you use pencil and paper or an online resource? I tried using cipherclerk and didn't get the correct answer.

A bit of both. I've spoilered my answer as it pretty much says what the answer is.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I first noticed that the distribution of letters was about right for a French quote, so it probably was not a substitution cipher like Caesar or Vigenere. Then the punctuation did not line up with the spaces, so I thought it was probably a cipher that simply rearranged the order of the text. The "four" clue pretty much shouted railfence at me so I tried that first but got something weird. I then thought that the funny characters might be interfering with the way the online decoder worked so I got rid of all of the accents and ran it again and it came out looking like French. Finally, I looked for another online railfence decoder that could cope with the accents and discovered this one:

http://www.purplehell.com/riddletools/railfence.htm

which seems to cope fine with the French characters.

Don't trust the online tools to get it right every time, especially if there are special characters in the code. Many only work right with ASCII text and some only work right with the characters a-z and A-Z.

I've worked on the translation a bit and think this is slightly better:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I leave these clues for you, my son. We race together over the continents. I am sorry that I am not a good mother for you, I am sorry that we are pursued by these strangers to our ways. Our foreign family gave us a gift blessed by Mari, but I cannot keep it safe now. You must first brave the holy catacombs, find the direction next in these walls. I you that you need to find it when you are ready. It is special, as you are, to me. I love you. I am sorry.

EDIT: I've messaged Brent to tell him the answer.

Very good solve.

the last line was still a little choppy, I think it may have meant to go like this:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I [Know that] you need to find it when you are ready. It is special, as you are, to me. I love you. I am sorry.

ALSO:

Quote:
Mari, Mari Urraca, Anbotoko Mari:
("the lady of Anboto") and the possibly distinct Murumendiko Dama ("lady of Murumendi") was a goddess — a lamia — of the Basques. She was married to the god Sugaar (also known as Sugoi or Majue). Legends connect her to the weather: that when she and Majue travelled together hail would fall, that her departures from her cave would be accompanied by storms or droughts, that which cave she lived in at different times would determine dry or wet weather: wet when she was in Anboto, dry when she was elsewhere (the details vary). Other places with where she was said to dwell include the chasm of Murumendi, the cave of Gurutzegorri (Ataun), Aitzkorri and Aralar, although it is not always possible to be certain which Basque legends should be considered to pertain to the same lamia.
