Clutching at straws...

Good work on the triquetra folks!

I think we must be looking for the key to some form of substitution cipher (Vigenere?) since there are 2Q's and 2Z's, but I've tried 753, three, pisces and triquetra in several permutations (like using a key three times, etc.) and can't get anywhere. Either I've got the wrong kind of cipher or I can't find the right key. I guess the text might be in Latin, in which case I might not recognise it even if I got the right key Sad.

Based on the answer to the previous clue, does anyone else think that this might be a picture from the wall of one of the Roman catacombs that Brent's Aunt managed to find? Which makes it likely to be a grave marking and thus 753 was probably the year of death of someone, though I have no idea who.

Maybe I'm using the wrong calender? AD was only widely adopted in the late 8th century, but the triquetra is so obviously a Christian symbol that it probably is AD.

This clue is hard! I think I might rename it "haven't got a" clue Wink.

well I was talking to Forum last night and he told me 753 was the year in which Rome was originated in.. this is important I believe, yet im not sure how it helps with the code decipher.

any chance this could be a vigenere that once run through once with "sevenhundredfiftythree" as a key, maybe then you run it through railfence?

im not great with codes but I was trying to run the code through railfence, with the starting points being 7-5-3..

then again, it probably wouldnt work due to the q's and z's..

hmph..

Stupid Code

I tried LITERALLY everything in Purple Hell's tools- maybe we're not coming up with the right key?

BRENT- we could use a little covert direction... Smile

I had a chat with Brent today, and Im not sure but I think he may have been trying to give me a hint of some nature.. here are a few relevent portions of the convo:

Quote:
Brentinthetent: It doesn't look the same as the other ones to me.
Sm00thwun: yeah i noticed that too..
Brentinthetent: I'm just staring at it
Brentinthetent: Hoping I don't go delusional from all this
Sm00thwun: yeah, its almost like im waiting for the answer to just jump out at me
Brentinthetent: You said the roman numerals are 753 right?
Brentinthetent: Hmm...

and then..

Quote:
Brentinthetent: I think there's something we're missing...
Brentinthetent: It's prolly right in front of us

and then..

Quote:
Sm00thwun: nothing that makes sense there... i know 753 being the origin of Rome has to have some importance there..
Brentinthetent: Possibly.
Brentinthetent: I think we're thinking too....in the box.
Sm00thwun: yeah.. im thinking the programs we have to code solving arent going to work with this one
Sm00thwun: this one may just involve some good ol fashion brain power..

So im guessing normal decoder programs/sites arent going to work. This may be just an illusional trick? Maybe? He said he just keeps staring at it and hopes he doesnt go delusional...hmm.. outside the box is an indicator that this may be something we havent seen yet, or ever...

OHYAIALMOSTFORGOT:

I also had a short convo with Matron Lamia. If she claimed that shes here to help, I figured I would put her to the test by prodding her knowledge of triquettas... she actually knew a lil bit, not sure how much this helps us but its worth posting..

Quote:
(12:06:09 PM) Sm00thwun: what do you know of triquettas?
(12:06:46 PM) matronlamia: Triquetra, triskelion, and other three-line symmetrical sigils are holy in almost any religion.
(12:07:05 PM) matronlamia: Namely European heathen religions and Christianity.
(12:08:07 PM) Sm00thwun: and are found within roman catacombs, correct?
(12:08:35 PM) matronlamia: They may have been.
(12:08:59 PM) matronlamia: If any were, I highly doubt they were on any large scale.
(12:09:13 PM) matronlamia: The triskelion is a paganistic symbol moreso than a Christian one.
(12:09:22 PM) matronlamia: But there may have been one or two found in painting or inscriptions.
(12:09:54 PM) Sm00thwun: I see.. so would it have been found in basque culture as well
(12:09:55 PM) Sm00thwun: ?
(12:10:05 PM) matronlamia: It is a common sigil.
(12:10:19 PM) matronlamia: Much like a cross, sun sign, or the star.
(12:10:27 PM) matronlamia: It's found many places.
(12:10:44 PM) Sm00thwun: I understand
(12:11:43 PM) Sm00thwun: thank you by the way
(12:11:59 PM) matronlamia: For?
(12:12:06 PM) Sm00thwun: answering my question
(12:12:42 PM) matronlamia: I wish I could be of more assistance.
(12:13:15 PM) Sm00thwun: no, its ok, any help at this point is appreciated

ABC.....easy with 123....

Don't mind me, Jackson 5 stuck in my head. Anywho, I'm about to burn this picture (which I think is pretty much okay since there are copies on the net.) and just sleep. I am feeling a bit better after my nap and I looked at it and after smooth told me about vigeneres...I don't think that's quite it. Dunno though, you guys are the experts or at least in my mind. So once again, if i didn't say it enough, thanks to you all.

Just to keep, well, you know Blogging since my recent ones have all been about this treasure. I believe I just got over feeling sick, as some of you know I've been lightheaded and tired and such. Arriana sent me a cute get well card today which made me really happy Me and her are doing great as well. She was worried since I didn't call her yesterday but I was sleeping pretty much ALL day.Strangely after I woke up today I found the top of my two locks unlocked when I'm pretty sure I locked them...and I was by myself when I left. The door is one of those with one keyhole in the top and one in the doorhandle but it has 2 different keys so it's strange that one of them would be unlocked. Prolly all my imagination and I forgot.

About the phone calls, I got 2 today. One a few hours ago and one less than an hour ago. On the first call, I got no response and said Sophia is dead. This time was the same as the others but now they whoever they are hung up even quicker. I'm thinking maybe it's some kind of phone company mess up or something. I don't know too much about phone stuff. Well I think that's about it on my front, well I should be around for a bit tonight. Eric invited me to a soccer game in a few hours so I'll catcha when I get back from my travels (down the street.....).

Codes

The following manual codes don't work-

every 7th letter
every 5th letter
every 3rd letter
every 7th, then 5th, then 3rd letter
every 15th letter
every 6th letter
ROT for any of the above numbers

And that chewed up a good couple hours at my desk! woohoo!

Other crackpot theories:
123=abc, 753=gec, rearrange to ecg, which is an echocardiogram for heart troubles. Dunno what to do with that.

Well he mentions 2 different keys... maybe we decode using two different methods (would suggest two different viginere keys, but I think he's steering us away from that).

Also, I couldn't make anything of the random capitalization in the new blog post. Did anyone get anywhere there? I'm pretty sure they're in order (bc he said "me and her" instead of "she and I") but I don't which letters to include.

I've been trying to make this a box cipher bc he mentioned "too in the box" in smooth's im.

what if abc=123

O F Y M Q K J O L R
15 6 25 13 17 11 10 15 12 18

L P U Z Y U A D Y L
12 16 21 26 25 21 1 4 25 12

Z P M N T A L J P Q
26 16 13 14 20 1 12 10 16 17

But if 123= roman numerals

O F Y M Q K J O L R
XV VI XXV XII XVI XI X XV XII XVIII

L P U Z Y U A D Y L
XII XVI XXI XXVI XXV XXI I IV XXV XII

Z P M N T A L J P Q

XXVI XVI XII XIV XX I XII X XVI XVII

that gives us 3 integers to work with XVI

If XVI or another arrangement of XVI = 753.....could that be the key?
Like X=7 V=5 I = 3 and work the substitution from there

I am not sure what to do to take it farther

(grasping at straws)

Code

I don't think there's anything to the capitalization- I could only see two "random" ones, and they're easily typos. Plus, there's a LOT of letter I's. I mean, a LOT.

EDIT: substitution alphabet with X=7, etc. yields gibberish. Gak.

METHINKSMEGOTIT!

lol see this is where it PAYS to befriend the weird people (ie Matron Lamia).

I did some asking when it came to triquettas to matron, as i showed you in my last post. I signed on today and I got a mail from her with a link to a code deciphering website called: (check spoiler!)

upon searching this site, I noticed a form of Vigenere Cipher that allows you to use numbers as keys instead of letters. Bingo, right? Not quite so easy, yet. Here goes..

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The name of the site is called: http://rumkin.com/tools/cipher/

On this site, there is a form of Vigenere Cipher called "Gronsfeld" which allows you to use Keywords that change the alphabet, AND numbers for the actual key. Confusing? Yeah I think so too. Fooling around with it a little, I used this:

Alphabet Key: Triquetta
Number key: 7 5 3

decoded message: ATLUPERCALEFOLLOWTHEMBACKWARDS

AT LUPER CALE FOLLOW THEM BACKWARDS

So whatcha think it means?!

thank yoooo matron!

GOTIT

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Lupercale is a cave recently discovered under Rome. It was called such because it was a she-wolf who nursed Romulus and Remus. I also found this website:

http://www.lupercale.org

Don't know if it's IG, but it certainly is strange.

EDIT:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Following them backward, as in geneaology, I get Mars and Rhea Silva as parents of R&R, Juno and Jupiter (Hera and Zeus for Greeks) as parents of Mars, Numitor as father of Rhea, Procas as father of Numitor, and an entire Alba Longa heritage on wiki.
