When I read "Apollo's Laurel" I pictured the laurel wreath that is generally worn around his head. It remains a symbol of high honor to this day, in fact, and is used in many symbols.

Brent's uploaded the fifth clue to his myspace pictures, and lo and behold, the image itself IS of the laurel wreath.

By the way, he mentioned something of concern to me.

PainfulEuphemism (7:41:57 PM): We have to crack this fast, then.
Brentinthetent (7:42:42 PM): Just matron needs to help me out, that's all.
PainfulEuphemism (7:42:46 PM): I know she will. It wouldn't be like her to leave you high and dry.
Brentinthetent (7:43:56 PM): I hope not.
Brentinthetent (7:44:11 PM): I'm not the biggest fan of her running off to Greece and not telling me.
Brentinthetent (7:44:14 PM): I thought she was dead for god sakes
PainfulEuphemism (7:44:05 PM): Everyone did.
PainfulEuphemism (7:44:09 PM): We were all worried about her, and you.
Brentinthetent (7:44:38 PM): Yeah, I'm still sorry about that.
Brentinthetent (7:44:44 PM): I would've called but i have no numbers.
PainfulEuphemism (7:44:37 PM): I'd have no problem giving you mine.
PainfulEuphemism (7:44:57 PM): I know, internet and stuff. It's a cell phone, can't really track me that way.
Brentinthetent (7:45:28 PM): Yeah, I usually only call from my cell as well.
PainfulEuphemism (7:45:31 PM): Would you feel better if you had phone numbers?
Brentinthetent (7:46:35 PM): Nah, not right now.
PainfulEuphemism (7:46:27 PM): And also, have you come across any mention of Apollo's Laurel in the journal yet?
Brentinthetent (7:47:00 PM): Maybe later on though.
Brentinthetent (7:47:05 PM): Yeah, that's where I found clue 5.
PainfulEuphemism (7:47:12 PM): Hm. then Lurker hasn't kept us up to date - last I heard you were still looking.
Brentinthetent (7:48:06 PM): Nope I uploaded the picture on my profile.
Brentinthetent (7:48:10 PM): umm...Can I ask you a question?
PainfulEuphemism (7:47:59 PM): Sure.
PainfulEuphemism (7:48:19 PM): (teaches me not to look at your pictures, only your bulletins and your blog)
Brentinthetent (7:48:35 PM): In your note thing, do you have all of the images I scan saved?
PainfulEuphemism (7:48:45 PM): My note thing? I'm sorry, I'm confused.
Brentinthetent (7:49:29 PM): Wherever you keep all this info.
Brentinthetent (7:49:48 PM): Lurker said you had all your notes somewhere online.
PainfulEuphemism (7:49:49 PM): Ah, yes, I know what you're talking about now.
PainfulEuphemism (7:50:16 PM): We have a few I recall seeing off the top of my head, I'd have to look more closely to make sure. Did you intend to delete the ones you've uploaded?
Brentinthetent (7:51:02 PM): Yeah.
Brentinthetent (7:51:09 PM): If he hacked my profile before.
Brentinthetent (7:51:17 PM): Chances are...he's seen the pages that I've uploaded

Now, I know that some of us have those pictures, but if you don't...

I tried to get a bigger copy of the fifth clue from him, but he said his computer's on the fritz, so it looks like that's all we have to work from right now.

sheesh... Sorry...

yeah.. he posted the new page.. which, yes, has a wreath.. but it also has the tree itself in it too.. *ppfpfpfffttt*

I was trying to figure out the letters..
had to track down the right font for it..
the bulk of it uses the ITC Blackadder font..

the last line uses a different font.

Here's what I got so far...

How much ROT types are there? I could grab a ROT feeder, but it appears there's a ton of them out there.

purplehell has a great ROT tool. You put in the encrypted text and it gives you all 26 ROTs. I'll work on it.

EDIT: It's not ROT, nor is it a cryptogram. It's also not vigenere or keyword (apollo, laurel, daphne).

Hm... and like Archaic said, it's not any of those... This is gonna take a while to crack. Maybe I'll email it to myself and give myself headaches over it while I eat my lunch at work tomorrow.

Yeah, I mentioned to him later in the conversation... (the next line after what I posted, actually)

I think it'd be a good idea for everyone to do so, just in case.

The Greek language, maybe? Or a form of ROT made by the PMs?

Well... just in case he decides to clean off his MS page...

I'll attach a copy of the image for later perusal by others...

The last line is either greek or the Symbol font in MS Word.

What kind of rotation are you thinking? I can only think of rotating through the alphabet.

Stumped as well

This is what I'm getting using high resolution and the Blackadder font.
The Last word is in Greek (haven't been able to find a translation tool that translates to anything but gibberish) and the characters are; chi, rho, iota, omicron, tau, delta, sigma [the delta could be an omicron but it's hard to tell-possible embellishment on paper]

Fyktuhdd tpg iwvd omfmzbl Χριοτσς

ROT gives nothing as stated. I'm speccing that Χριοτσς is either a key/pass word or acting as a signature.

I also noticed there seems to be some watermark text on the page spanning both sides. It would seems something with text on it was stuffed in between the pages for quite some time since it looks like the ink from the missing paper has left marks on the book pages.. Someone wanna ask Brent about this? (the only letters I could make out clearly where PM making me wonder if something that wasn't supposed to be there got left in the book for too long or a brush template was used to create the image but done in a hurry)

Yeah.. that was actually one of the first things to jump at me.. so I asked him about it right then, while we were still talking... I believe it's nothing, and not related to the clue.. it does look interesting though.

you can see PM. but also above that you can see the end of a word.. "ober". could be October... *shrugs*

Off topic

Completely off topic but I think maybe he had something off the PM rules and tips board from October printed and left in the page... Kudos to the PMs =)

Gonna try to brute force the code with letter frequencies..(3hr later)
I've done frequency checks and crunched the letters. I've noticed some oddities that are complicating it from being a straight replacement cypher.

Bolded are the oddities, any insight into what words could be used in these spots might clear stuff up. However, at the moment I don't think this is crackable through straight replacement cyphering. It's most likely a key type cypher or some other rotational cypher type. ie. Vignere/Enigma

Why yes, I think that could be exactly it. Why, does it mean something?

Sorry, didn't mean to be cryptic.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It's the word used for Christ in the new testament, though it actually means "annointed one" if you take a more literal translation.

question

Still reading through all the old info on this board, so forgive my ignorance on some things please.
I'm assuming the code and book it was gotten out of was very old. Do we have any rough idea about when this code was used? It might help us narrow the type of coding, seeing as how there was a serious lack of truly complex cyphers and variety of cyphers used a couple hundred or more years ago.

Good job Gamber =)
I knew I shouldn't have skipped bible study =P
