I really need to figure out how to use the code programs so I don't throw unnecessary info out.

Did you happen to try Antichrist or 666? Many early Christians beleived Nero to be the antichrist, and that 666 is a code for Nero's name as well. Sorry to keep looking at it from this angle, but the time frame of Nero and Rome lends itself quite well to the Biblical Scholar in me.

Ah, Matron logged on today, and I spoke to her!

Quote:
PainfulEuphemism (1:25:07 PM): Hello, Matron. My name is Erin, and I'm with the group trying to help Brent. Can I ask you a few questions?
matronlamia (1:36:31 PM): Hello Erin.
matronlamia (1:36:42 PM): Ask away. Sorry for the wait - I was occupied elsewhere.
PainfulEuphemism (1:36:24 PM): It's understandable. I was wondering if perhaps you could help me with bouncing some ideas off you, as well.
matronlamia (1:37:31 PM): Absolutely.
PainfulEuphemism (1:37:14 PM): You mentioned while you were speaking to Brent that you couldn't think of anything significant related to someone singing as something burns...
PainfulEuphemism (1:37:29 PM): But I've found documentation stating that there was a rumor that Nero sang as Rome burned...
PainfulEuphemism (1:37:42 PM): Do you think that perhaps that's relevant or important?
matronlamia (1:38:43 PM): Absoutely.
matronlamia (1:39:03 PM): I have done some research as well, and I have found some things which may be helpful to you in decoding the puzzle.
PainfulEuphemism (1:38:33 PM): Ah! That's fantastic!
matronlamia (1:39:29 PM): It seems to me that there is a pattern almost to the coding of the textual clues.
matronlamia (1:39:45 PM): Vigeneres happen with surprising regularity, but so do other ciphers with alphabet keys.
PainfulEuphemism (1:39:25 PM): Yes, we've basically figured that this isn't a vignere.
matronlamia (1:40:11 PM): Perhaps you need to expiriment with other types of ciphers along those lines. I would help futher, but I don't know enough to really help.
matronlamia (1:40:40 PM): I know one you used was a Vigenere with an alphabet key as well.
matronlamia (1:40:47 PM): Perhaps there are more like that.
PainfulEuphemism (1:40:12 PM): Perhaps...
PainfulEuphemism (1:40:19 PM): Thank you very much!
matronlamia (1:41:23 PM): Bien sur. I am here to help.

So I guess that means it's definitely NOT a Vigenere...

I figured it might not be, too. That's why I've also been putting everything into the keyword cipher, too.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

From This Wiki Page

In 67 CE Emperor Nero, who was just 30 years old and had just killed his own mother, when visiting the Oracle was told:

Your presence here outrages the god you seek. Go back, matricide! The number 73 marks the hour of your downfall!

He was angered and had the Pythia buried alive. Nero thought he would have a long reign and die at 73. Instead his reign came to a short end after a revolt by Galba who was 73 years of age at the time.

Great job, Lurker! I forgot about Bifid!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Iudas Novus = new Judas

Also, Sodom and Gomorrah also burned, and many people equate Rome with them and use that as an explaination for why it was destroyed.

Re: Greek

A bit off topic, but...

Actually what it says on your fish actually means "fish"! It is a Christian symbol because it is also an acronym for "Jesus Christ, Lord and Saviour" or something like that in Greek, though I can't remember the actual Greek.

Back on topic, nice solve Lurker!

I think at this point it might mostly be a waiting game for Brent to find something else in the journal. We ought to look up stuff that the clue referred to, though, just in case we come across anything interesting.

ETA: I spoke to Brent earlier (again)

Quote:
Brentinthetent (6:30:50 PM): Well I'm looking through the pages.
Brentinthetent (6:31:01 PM): I found something that may be it.
PainfulEuphemism (6:30:23 PM): Ah!
PainfulEuphemism (6:30:38 PM): That's always good news!
Brentinthetent (6:31:27 PM): yeah but no scanner right now...
PainfulEuphemism (6:31:02 PM): Aww.
Brentinthetent (6:31:59 PM): Sorry.
Brentinthetent (6:32:07 PM): I can kinda describe it but that's it.
PainfulEuphemism (6:31:28 PM): Got me all excited for nothing.
PainfulEuphemism (6:31:45 PM): Go ahead, I'll let the others know about the description
Brentinthetent (6:32:48 PM): Well I'm not sure if it's relevant.
Brentinthetent (6:32:54 PM): It's like a picture of the crusifixion.

He said he'll email it to me when he gets it scanned in, since he doesn't want G to get any more clues. I'm sure that means he'll email a copy to Lurker, too, and at any rate, I'd show it to you guys as soon as I could.

So... Crucifixion.

Okay, so here's some things I know about crucifixion.

It was certainly used in Rome, but I know of no mention of it being used in Greece.

Crux weren't always t-shaped, as is the Christian icon. Sometimes it was simply one upright, St. Andrew was crucified on an X-shape, and St. Peter was crucified upside-down.

Death from crucifixion was usually from asphyxiation. With nails through the wrists and heels to support the body, the condemned would have to lift themselves up by the wrist nails in order for the lungs to expand. After hours or days on the cross without food or drink, the condemned would lose the ability to lift himself up and thus wouldn't be able to breathe.

Christ (since He was mentioned in the clue) carried His transom (cross-beam) to Golgotha (The Place of the Skull), a hill outside Jerusalem.

The only connection I can find to witches even remotely is that Jesus died at 3 PM according to Mark's Gospel, so that 3 AM (because it's the opposite) has been referred to as The Witching Hour.

That's about all I got. I haven't got ANY idea what to do with that conversation. Smile

EDIT: Okay, maybe ONE other connection- Shortly after Nero's reign (around 71 bc) there was the Third Servile War during which Spartacus led a slave revolt. When it was over, about 6000 of Spartacus's followers were crucified along the road between Rome and Capua.

It is beleived that Nero had Saint Peter crucified in the year 64 A.D. If I remember correctly Peter was crucified upside down.

The Persian King Xerxes brought crucifixion to Greece, when he crucified the bodies of the Spartans after the Battle at the Hot Gates.

EDIT: If I am reading wiki right Impaling is also considered a form of crucifixion.

Well lets see here:

There is Iudas Novus. (New Judas)
As they would do to Us, he did to them.
Remember his acts against Christ.

What did Judas do to Christ? Betrayed him? Christ was crucified, but that was a result of the betrayal, not something that Judas did himself, right?

Quote:
According to the account given in the gospels, he carried the disciples' money box and betrayed Jesus for a bribe of "thirty pieces of silver" by identifying him with a kiss—the "kiss of Judas"—to arresting soldiers of the High Priest Caiaphas, who then turned Jesus over to Pontius Pilate's soldiers. These "pieces of silver" were most likely intended to be understood as silver Tyrian shekels.

Also, Judas Iscariot was one of Christ's inner circle, one of his trusted ones. He didn't nail Him to the tree, but he might as well have driven Him there. Judas knew when he betrayed Jesus that it would directly result in His death. I think we need to be worried about OUR inner circle...

Sound like a conversation we've had, Lurker?

I've had so many conversations regarding so many things in the last month... that I have no idea what you are talking about...

Gimme a hint?
