Here's a link to the Google Maps view of those coordinates.
http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=51.500611,-0.124611&spn=0.003,0.003&q=51.500611,-0.124611

(Enter +43° 5' 45.00", -0° 2' 39.00" in the search box)

Due to the fire reference, I thought that maybe "Bergie" could be Bernadette of Lourdes, but she was 35 when she died, not 23.

Quote:
Her 16th vision, which she stated went for over an hour, was on March 25. During this vision, the second of two "miracles of the candle" is reported to have occurred. Bernadette was holding a lighted candle; during the vision it burned down, and the flame was said to be in direct contact with her skin for over 15 minutes but she apparently showed no sign of experiencing any pain or injury. This was said to be witnessed by many people present, including the town physician, Dr. Pierre Romaine Dozous, who timed and later documented it. According to his report, there was no sign that her skin was in any way affected, so he monitored Bernadette closely but did not intervene. After her "vision" ended, the doctor said that he examined her hand but found no evidence of any burning, and that she was completely unaware of what had been happening. The doctor then said that he briefly applied a lighted candle to her hand, and she reacted immediately. It is unclear if observers other than Dozous were sufficiently close to witness if the candle was continuously in contact with Bernadette's skin.

So the Cooridinates lead to :

Lourdes, France..

Rogi, I read the same vision but it said it was the 17th one.. the only reason i noted it was because Brent is 17 years old right now... check it out ..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Lourdes#The_1st_appearance_.2811_February.29

EDIT: If you keep zooming on the map coordinates, it specifically points to a house on a street called "Rue de Bagneres"

Bagneres...bergle... sounds like? I wish we could figure out what this house is..

Do try Google Earth. I used Google Maps cause GE won't run on this tired old machine.

It looks like a hotel or maybe a church, definitely a large building. I kept getting the wrong spot when I used goole maps, forgot to change the coodrdinates! I have been searching for the symbol in all the Wican sites I can find. I am going to try art symbols next b/c I googled Ambrosie (sp?) and it can up with a French artisit and a French Doctor. Will keep trying!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lourdes

so we must be on the right track

Rogi, I simply can't see how anyone could have been expected to figure this out. Would you please explain or point me somewhere that might have a methodology? I butted my head against this thing for quite a while, expecting in the end for the key to be some word or phrase I may have overlooked. I have to admit I am pretty pissed off. Every hint and every clue had absolutely nothing to do with the solution. I think I may be the one about to go emo.

i found a symbol here.....

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/36/Alchemytable.jpg
looks like the one on his key.....jgms or jgnesrota er something.....also on this diderot he was all about philosphy and alchemy keep gettin links that go both ways.....heres a piece from his encyclopedia..........

http://www.brown.edu/Departments/History_Mathematics/HM0004/readings/Diderot.html

and another one....http://altreligion.about.com/library/texts/bl_waitemartinism.htm

also found that the symbol could mean philosphers stone(aka squaring the circle) but theres no square but here it is........

I'll let someone else do the geography homework.

Somebody call him before he goes all emo. Wink

I know it seems like that was a bit unfair, buy given the way it was done, it wasn't that hard to solve(once you find the right starting point).

Edit: Corrected cipher type

I'm just wondering why the key and the plaintext are the same thing? Also I agree with Beef Sumpreme, how in Gawd's name did you get this? I'm pretty sure we are all HUGE noobs compared to you. lol

Actually, that's exactly what a Vigenere autokey is. If the main key is shorter than the plaintext, the plaintext is added to the end of the key till it's the same length as the plaintext.

You'll be surprised how easy it is to crack, once you do it. This is a good cipher for defeating computer-based solvers, though.

So...
Go to your favorite vigenere tool/notebook and set up the ciphertext from the note.
Now just try the key we obtained from the french Diderot definition of the symbol, "or de mine"

If you use a tool, remember that some don't deal with line breaks, spaces and punctuation very well, so just make all fields are one continuous string of characters.

Look at your resultant plaintext. It says "fortythr", so you kinda know it is gonna need two more "e"s, playing around with that, you'll find that the next two key letters are "fo".

This was the hardest part.
Normally, in a Vigenere, if the key is shorter than the ciphertext, you'll see the beginning and several other points of the result start to be readable, till you find the full key and the whole plaintext is decoded.

Since that wasn't happening, I started looking for more to add to the key.
One of the items I tried was the "rtythree" that was in the result, because I had "fo" in both at that point. But I was going to try backsolving "degrees" at some point, anyway, so it wouldn't have mattered.. They just confirmed each other.

From there, it's just a matter of leapfrogging the plaintext chunks into the key

So I emailed Brent informing him of the solution and asking him if he knew anything significant about Lourdes. His reply:

Quote:
Yeah, I've gotten the coordinates. About Lourdes, I've never heard of the place myself but my last name is of French origin. Gonna talk to pop later.

So I guess we wait until this evening for a reply.

ps- Rogi, thanks for the lesson. I hope to be that cipher-savvy at some point.

I got the same message.

I've been looking up witch hunts in lourdes, france but couldn't find anything.
Also no connection between Ambroise and witch craft from what I can find.

Good work Rogi, that'll teach me not to read all of the posts properly, I hadn't noticed that someone had found out that the symbol was called "or de mine"...
