So let me get this straight - they were editing the movie along with the sound effects right there on set and you just walked up, stuck in a flash drive, and copied the sound? I bet it went something like this:
Unfiction Forum Guy: Hey, how's it going?
Abrams Staff: It's good, it's good. Are you the guy delivering the pizzas?
Unfiction Forum Guy: Oh... umm... yeah, that's me. Mind if I use your computer to... umm... confirm your order?
Abrams Staff: I guess so. Make sure you don't click on the super secret sound file named "Thingy" right there on the desktop.
Unfiction Forum Guy: No problemo. Hey, is that a flying fish? (inserting a flash drive)
Abrams Staff: Where? Did you say a "flying fish?" Holy crap, I always wanted to see one of those!
Unfiction Forum Guy: Ah hah! Now I can follow through with my diabolical plan to steal a sound file!
I'm assuming that's how it went. By the way, considering that it's a super cool monster movie, you would thing that they would use a sound effect that sounds better than Contra era 1988.

C'mon guys...Really I am a professional sound engineer. This is a complete fake. Giving this any more thought is a complete waste.
Audio is done in post, end of story.

Now Origin has edited his own post, to say it was 'removed', then signed it 'Administrator', to make us believe there is some official status to his 'sound effect'. Sorry, origin. When administrators edit your post, they'll sign their name, and it won't show 'last edited by Origin' on the bottom.
Unfortunately, you can't use this information I've just given you to your benefit, as the next time you try to edit your post, it will say 'edited 2 times by Origin...'
Give up on this fake troll crap, people, especially if you're dumber than the players here who will figure you out. Origin belongs in this unfortunate group.

So true. Also, an explanation of the edit is included along with the name.
Sometimes a witty, or meant to be witty, remark is thrown in.

Is this type of thing par for the course for ARG's or does Cloverfield just attract hoaxers for some reason?
If it's normal I don't know how you regular players can stand having to sift through all the constant bulloney.
I would say, no, it isn't par for the course. The combination of the number of people searching for new information and the lack of official updates creates a condition where some people just take advantage of the situation to get web traffic, attention, or to be malicious. ARGs require players to sift data, so that might contribute to hoaxers thinking they can capitalize on a game.
That isn't to say it never happens, it does happen in big games.
