I think/hope it's Cthulhu

There is some circumstantial evidence that suggests Cthulhu could be the creature...

For one, there's the whole aquatic/underwater connection... Cthulhu sleeps in the submerged city of R'lyeh or whatever it's called. There are any number of interesting plot devices that could be used to awaken him (deep sea exploration/mining, global warming, etc).

Two: There's a crappy movie starring Tori Spelling coming out soon called "Cthulhu". Intuition would say that two movies concerning the same subject wouldn't be produced so closely together, but history shows us this is not true. Remember the rash of nearly simultaneously released underwater movies (The Abyss, Leviathan, Deep Star Six)? How about Antz & A Bug's Life? Or the two recent Truman Capote movies?

It's possible that a smaller studio would catch wind of a larger project and try to ride on its coattails by greenlighting a similar film... Now, it's unlikely that the "Cthulhu" movie's producers would know of the JJ Abrams project before hand, as it was kept tightly under wraps, but you never know...

Three: While Cthulhu wouldn't be an original idea, he is an original American creation.

My apologies if these points have been raised elsewhere... I don't have hours to scour the growing archives here.

The comparison of "types" of movies, other than the two Capote films, which was an ODD coincidence, is nothing really strange. It also doesn't mean it's going to be a Cthulhu movie, but just a monster movie.

The aquatic thing? There are MANY other occurances of "water based" monsters. Why pick Cthulhu?

The truth is that while JJ did not say "original", everything about the conversation was that it would be something new. He mentioned King Kong and called him cuddly. There was already the pushing aside of using an established mythology. Likely, as been stated, it will be something that pulls on different sources, just like anything.

And do we REALLY want this to be a Cthulhu movie? It deals nothing with the madness or true terror that Lovecraft really pushd. It would be a candy like Cthulhu movie. Do you REALLY want that?

Also, there IS a functioning search function.

As an aside, Cthulhu is an original American creation by a guy who had a massive hard-on for all things English - in his world, Cthulhu probably had a trendy SoHo accent.

Rolling Eyes

This is not a Cthulhu movie, people. Or at least, if it is, it's going to be a crappy one.

If you can find something about my second point on this forum, please point it out to me. I believed it to be an original thought, though perhaps not one that you're interested in.

I am purely responding to the following:

Not trying to be an ass about it, just trying to reinforce people to use the search function. It is functional and does work. no reason to have other people do your research for you.

I hope it's not Cthulhu. After the initial interest, I am now thoroughly bored with that idea.

Also, I doubt with a Cthulhu movie he would just smash into New York City. It's not just some mindless monster.

Point three. Explaining how to defeat Cthulhu would take 7 hours. I doubt he would rush it.

I pray/don't think its Cthulhu.

Like I said. Cthulhu uses TK and tentacles, and usually his Star-Spawn and Shoggoths do his dirty work.

No one has gone insane or chanted "CTHULHU DREAMS!!".

Also, R'lyeh is supposed to be (edit: according to the findings by the narrator in "Call of Cthulhu") in the Pacific ocean, therefore if it were to come to north american land, it would be on the west coast, and not NY.

I don't mean to be a prick, either. I think the lack of a true ARG and a drought of info has everyone on edge...

Isn't it funny how the newbies who have been following this for all of a week or less are the ones who get bitchy when we speak of things they don't understand.

That speech JJ gave at Comicon was not his only say on the matter. Just because no one here can find the link (or cares to bother trying to educate newcomers) doesn't mean he didn't say it.

Those of us who have been researching this from Day 1 (July 3, 2007) know that in fact somewhere JJ or one of his associates did say this was gonna be an original, biological monster.

Maybe a SEARCH of the site would turn up the original link but I'm not gonna hold your hand for you.

Someone, somwhere, said something, and you know it for a fact.

In the words of the immortal Inigo Montoya: "I dunnot thin' that word means what you thin' it means."

Let's see. This looks like a good time, smash up the city type of monster movie. Qthooloo is more of a dark, psychotic, cerebral type scare the pants off of you movie. I agree, too much story, too much history, too much everything. This is something new and different.

I think JJ is capable of something originial.

Thanks for picking my post for the eyeroll. I don't happen to think it's a Cthulhu movie, nor have I ever said so.
