[SPEC]Another thought: underwater volcano?

Although I sincerely doubt there's an underwater volcano in New York harbor, it *could* be feasible in Hollywoodland...

so...what if the big explosion comes from an underwater explosion that's triggered by the Monster and/or Tagruato's sinister doings?

It's a long shot, but I'm just wondering if all those pics from the set of people and cars coated in dust could be from volcanic ash instead of debris from fallen buildings...

sounds far fetched for something JJ Abrams would have planned. The "ash" is probably just rubble from surrounding buildings. As we have seen in the trailer, there is plenty of debris around from having the SOL head crash into buildings to buildings being blown apart by explosions.

The footage I've seen of underwater volcanoes usually has it spewing lava into the seabed rather than sending it shooting into the atmopshere (although just because that's what I've seen doesn't mean that's the full extent they can go to), setting aside the fact that there's no tectonic ridges near New York. As seen in set photos large chunks of buildings have been knocked down, so given the amount of dust that was in New York after the WTC collapsed it's a safe bet the 'ash' is from whatever buildings have been damaged or destroyed.

...besides, give JJ some credit; I very much doubt he'd duplicate the volcano under a city theme as it's been done badly already (only it was under LA... a pleasant prospect.

Dante's Peak wasn't in LA. Laughing

It's a good theory, not one I'd subcribe to, yet, but good.

Yup, HerO was probably talking about Valcano (1997) w/ Tommy Lee Jones.

I said Dante's Peak (1997) w/ Pierce Brosnan, because I like Valcano.

True, but the smart ones would leave, or at least throw the "bad" ones in the lava for us. Laughing

Since this is a monster for the US, and being inspired by Gojira, at it's core it should appeal to American fears much like Gojira rose from the nuclear fallout that was a preoccupation (with good reason) of the Japanese mindset at the time of his creation.

Its easy to see that in this.. The Monster (from what seems likely) rises at least in part from Massive Corporate Greed/Expansion/Environmental Indiscretions and/or Americas Obsession w/ Pop Culture/Conspicuous Consumerism. All ideas deep in the American conscious.

But Americas deepist conscious issue right now is Terrorism, and while it would be difficult to create a Monster movie from that cloth, invoking the emotions from that is easy through imagery that is still all to real for many of us.. The destruction of a landmark, especially one as American as the SoL, Destrcution in NY, People stumbling through the thick white dust that filled the streets immediatly after the towers collapse... Thats what those images are there for, New Yorkers and America now now, each and every one of us, what the aftermath of a major building collapse looks like, and whether its a bomb or a giant monster, its going to pull heartstrings we all have, especially from the rocking camerawork of a scared, average American..

I think this movie has the potential to be very disturbing to lots of folks.. and evoking emotion is good filmaking.

And I'm sorry if I don't see a volcano able to do it to us the same way as crumbling buildings these days...
