i agree with moto here. i think i've come to terms with this never becoming a game. it will slowly unravel at their discretion in order to publicize the movie, which is a lot of fun, but there won't be anything to solve as the end result is a movie that is trying to make money; they won't give anything away before then.

another GLARING clue that it isn't an ARG is that abrams even said at the comic con that we'll be seeing a title, a real trailer, and a real poster. he just admited to us that he's going to ditch the viral marketing aproach to advertise it like any other movie in the coming months. there's nothing to figure out. even if he collects his senses and says "hey this way is so much better publicity and it's fun for my fans!", it still won't be more than the method used on the blair witch project, which was just further INSIGHT into the story around the film. it never gave anything away in the form of riddles and such.

all this from a guy who just suggested people look for a childrens book about whales in their local library, i know... but upon more thought, i think you all will agree: this is most likely not going to evolve into an ARG. though i really hope it does...

IF there's an ARG around this movie, I can't imagine it being designed around figuring out what's going to be in the movie. (but, then, I've never played an actual ARG, so...). That would essentially be an ARG about finding movie "spoilers." Where's the sense in that? For one thing, it could only be played ONCE - in the 6 months before the movie came out.

Wouldn't it make more sense if the ARG is about - as you said - getting more insights into the backstory: what is the monster? where did it come from? why did it attack New York? We won't be told any of that in the movie, to keep it Blair-Witch style realistic. If that's true, then the ARG won't really start until after the movie comes out. In the meantime, we've got a sort of 'prelude' to it, in the form of an ARE/marketing; once the movie comes out (or maybe just before the movie comes out), it will become a bona-fide ARG. The key, then, would be: Be Patient.

I can see this working out that way b/c they could have figured out all the backstory when writing up the movie; knowing that none of it would actually be included in a Blair Witch style movie. Now, they're focusing on getting the movie made; once it's done, they'll shift focus to the ARG, which will involve all that backstory. So, J.J. Abrams & Co., could be leaving all the pre-movie ARE stuff to the viral marketers (w/certain instructions regarding certain things, e.g., rules about responding to myspace messages, etc.), but then they'll take the reins once the real ARG starts up.

Just a thought. Anyway, if there is an ARG, I can't imagine it would be about finding movie "spoilers."

We'll just have to wait till a new poster, or the REAL trailer to come out till we can actually assume more things, and get this hype on the road again, because its pretty much dying down because of this stall in anything new.
