[SPEC] Trailer:map - A party; Manhattan goes up in flames
The question we've been waiting for?

Melampus, worngmike, a few other folks, and I have been discussing the map from the trailer (image courtesy of Dennis from Cloverfieldclues) in the picture analysis thread. It seems like a safe bet that the right side of the map is a map of Manhattan. The left side of the map seems to me to be New Jersey, across the Hudson (check it out at Google maps). If that's the case, then the largest of the strange markings on the left side of the map would be just west of Liberty Park, where you'll find the Statue of Liberty. And a great big monster.

That's the picture analysis portion of this posting. If you see it differently, please respond in the pic analysis thread. Here's the speculative part:

If whoever owns that apartment where the party is being thrown (not necessarily Rob, as worngmike pointed out) knew about the attacks in advance* then we have a real mystery on our hands. Not only that, but the mystery involves seven people that we've been allowed to question--seven people who have encouraged us to question them. The only catch is that the crime hasn't been committed yet.

So, if you're willing to play along with the basic speculation here--that the map tells us that whoever hosted that party knew about what was going to happen--then our first question in this ARG is who's apartment is that? The next objective would be to figure out what they're up to.

From this perspective, there are a number of artifacts sitting around the apartment that could help us figure this out. The Japanese stuff might lead you to think it's Rob's apartment, but the party is being thrown is in his honor, so all that might mean nothing. That AKM paddle might be something, though. Who went to a school that had an AKM chapter? Who snowboards? Et cetera.

We've said before that what we're lacking is a question. This could be it.

---

*I know it's an assumption, that this map means what I think it means, but thus is the nature of speculation, right?

Like your theory, would like to subscribe to your newsletter

I'm not questioning that the map has some significance to its fictional owner(s). And if it did play an integral point to the plot (you know, one guy says to map's owner later, "Why the hell did your map have pins/markings at the exact locations where Monster X first attacked?" and embarrassing explanations ensue), that would be great.

But if you KNEW that this horrible thing was going to happen, why would you keep YOURSELF in harm's way? And draw dozens of other people to that very same place? There was a reason Robert Hawkins (no relation) in "Jericho" moved his family to middle-of-nowhere Kansas: he wanted to protect them. Unless our map guy has some special ability or resources to protect his friends, it doesn't make sense to me that he'd round them all up in one place. Unless he's a sadistic killer with a suicidal bent.

Or...he's the monster.

Unfortunately, none of the colleges that we know they went to have an AKM chapter, at least according to this website:
http://www.alphakappamu.org/chapters.html

Beth and Rob - NYU
LenaDia - Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts
Jamie - Ithaca
Hud - ???
Lily - ???
Hawk - I'm guessing didn't go to college because he has his HS listed but no college

From that picture though - the hats, the skateboard - I would guess that at least one guy lives there.

Rob left a myspace comment mentioning Grimaldis pizza:

"Musta been all the grimadi's last night. just stay outta my room, ok?"

Grimaldi's pizza is in Brooklyn and Hoboken New Jersey. If you look at the map in the trailer you can see a red x pretty much right on Hoboken. Maybe this actually is a real clue?

It would be really nice if we had someone posting from the area check the locations marked on the map, perhaps there might be some kind of poster or something that might give us a clue. (though that might this into more of a LARP)

maps

we need a real close up pic of the map and lets print a map like it and start plotting the x's to see where they lead, and go crossing things off the list then analyze the places and see which charater could have been there

another hint-Witchcraft, gourmet sandwiches , in NYC-Mnhtn
Jamie L.'s Profile

Jamie mentions sandwiches twice in her M-Space Profile, and her favorite place to go is witchcraft, this is a place in Manhattan/Tribeca area, this give some validity to your map location. Jamie is the one i think is shady with all her reference to Wicca. even though Jessica Lucas (character we havent been intro'd to) has great cans

That would be fantastic, but does the detail exist in the first place? Can someone with the capabilities check that out?

Also, cantwaltz, you're right- it is unlikely. That's the part that makes it interesting, I think. Why would someone who had advance knowledge of this attack not run away? This is where Dr. Frankenstein stories come in--or Lovecraft-like stories of acolytes who got in too deep. The first question, of course, before why is who.

rob knew

is there anyway that we could go on the (previous metioned) theory that rob knew but since he didn't know about the party (surprise) he couldn't do anything... not that smart of a theory but i think this is prob the most logical spec thread so far cuz i just got pissed off reading ppl say its still cthulu!!!

or maybe (like it's been mentioned before) the monster's attracted to slusho and no one knows it!

Very Happy

i don't mean to spoil the fun; speculation is why we're here... but you folks are obviously reaching a little too far. this will NOT be a conspirary film. it will be a monster film. the only riddles we will ever need to figure out for this (quasi) ARG is where the monster comes from or what it is. and i'm afraid we won't, otherwise we could become disinterested and not want to see the movie. why would they make it solvable when the final stage is a product (movie) that they want us to spend money on? they won't.

hopefully in the coming weeks there will be clues like there were with abrams lateral puzzles regarding 'lost', but we're not going to figure out more than what they want us to know, which, let's be realistic, won't give anything away about the guts of the film.

i'm still guessing he turns around and serves us an average trailer in the coming months that shows the monster and ruins our fun actually. there's no evidence that this is even a game sadly enough.

i think i strayed from my original thought; conspiracies aren't the issue here i'm afraid. this will be a monster movie where no one is guilty except the monster trashing the city.

conspiracy?

well some monster movies have quite a bit of conspiracy like for instance the relic someone made it or godzilla someone created it or the thing where did it come from so on most cases i think monster movies to some degree include a bit of conspiracy, so the fact that someone knows about this monster is quite prbable

This is definitely a possible outcome of Cloverfield, but I don't see how you could be so sure at this point. Look at the discussion of House of Leaves. Sure, it's just one book listed in one MySpace account, but the implications are pretty clear. Also, the repeated discussion of lateral riddles, which you mentioned, indicates to me that something more is afoot.

Concerning the possible complexity of the movie itself, I'm not sure why you'd expect JJ Abrams to be involved in an uncomplicated, straightforward monster-go-smash movie. Not all monster-movies are created equal.

This might be nothing more than a straightforward riddle about "What kind of monster is it?" If that turns out to be the case, I'll be really disappointed. I'm hanging on here, though, because there seems to be a good chance that there's something more going on.

I think it's a very interesting theory but it's quite a stretch. They could just be monster sightings over the past few weeks that he's heard about in the news.

He could be a conspiracy theorist and is trying to diagram if the monster does exist, does it follow a pattern?

Or it could possibly be previous attacks from the monster. Which I feel would've been enough for mass evacuation of an island such as manhatten.

There are thousands of reasons why he could mark up a map. Not even monster related: That could be all the places he's gotten laid over his time in NYC.

well, I think we can sfely agree on sumthing that really narrows the possibilities, in the monstrous poster, u see a trail of wate from the SOL, meaning that this thing can swim, or is too tall to be affected by it.
