That's just PR speak. Everything's revolutionary, exciting, and never fails to fulfill its role.

Yesyes, but it's "Revolutionary, exiting, and didn't fail to fufill it's role" because

1. It was cheap.

2. The puppetmasters were unable to keep up with the players at the beginning

3. It was full of fail.

Now, don't get me wrong: I enjoyed this ARG, but... seriously, these guys must have had a huge "End of ARG" party, and all the food was topped with hallucenogenic mushrooms.

Well, Iris was dissapointing. Why the hell was it called Iris in the first place? User interaction was at a minimum too.

i dont see what you guys are all so mad about, what you think microsoft exists to create free alternate reality games for your pleasure. This wasnt a collosal failure they couldnt fail to begin with, as proof how many of you arent going to buy halo 3 because of this advertising campaign. They had to of known outlets like unfiction would critisize them, but all they really wanted was some free marketing time. Which was and still is being given to them

it was a good business move

I lol'd as well. But since that's out in the open, might as well...

Iris was... meh. How to put it - the game that could have been but wasn't? It had a good start, what with interactive content like AR and the SOTA site. Looked to be a good puzzle trail in the works.

Then Microsoft abandoned the puzzle-trail, cast user interaction to the winds, and proceeded to liberally apply feces to their "spiral campaign designed to take gamers on an incredible journey." Server unlocks became not a battle of wits with other players, but a contest of who could refresh the fastest or lurk the most in IRC channels. Content was introduced which had no purpose but to spoon-feed 'players' the information necessary to 'proceed'. Examples include the starimage jpegs, TheArtifactLocation.com, and the BPC code at the locations listed in TheArtifactLocation.

If they only had permitted users to interact a bit more, had hired puzzlemasters who were able to keep up with the 'player'-base, and didn't make incredible errors like messing up on GPS coordinates, then maybe, _maybe_ this would have been more interesting. We know (or most of us realists know) that this would not have been another ILB, but lord almighty Microsoft! No one said you had to make it the inverse representation of all that was good and fun about ILB!

Although I agree that to complain about something that's free is kind of silly, it almost seems like we were a bunch of kids at an outdoor pool when a giant truck pulls up outside with a sign saying, "Super Fun! And ice cream too!" Then we're told that we have to do 50 jumping jakcs. Then we have to sit on the grass and pick 100 blades of grass. And then we get the crappy, half melted cup of vanilla. You know? I mean, why bother? Especially if you knew that most all of the kids were going to go to your ice cream shop right after they got out of the pool.

And that's another thing, how many of you weren't going to buy Halo before this started? Anyone? They were advertising to the people who were already in line to buy.

I think that an ARG could be run on the cheap really well, but these people didn't seem to really care.

Wow. Just wow. I didn't even play ILB at all and I found this, "ARG," extremely disappointing. You guys have said it already but I think that even without having something to reference this ARG with, it was a major flop. I was up for over 48 hours on the 15th - 17th full of excitement but by the time I fell asleep that night, I lost all of that excitement, as well as the need to find out more about the Halo universe. Thats the worst that can happen, IMO. GG MS plz lrn2ply kkthx. QQ

I've been trying not to do this:

damn. Well, while you're lamenting Iris' suck, delight yourselves with www.roflcat.com or my very own www.boyhowdypro.com .

What happened to AR?

What happened to Volman?

What are the Server objets?

What was our role as the players in all this?

so anyone got any answers?

Well, I'll be one of the few who did not plan to buy . . .

. . . and probably still won't after this. Mainly for other reasons, but if the comic wasn't on the Halo 3 site, I could almost make a case against this being Halo-related.

Content was mainly self-feeding, with very little in the way of getting people introduced to Halo. THe free advertising actually came from the unwitting participants of this VC (us), since we're making the connections to Halo with the weak references and such, despirately stretching and reaching to make this more than what it was and also having to do the corrections in Halo canon for newbies.

I doubt we'lll gt any more answers on the hanging questions, such as the meaning of the glyphs, images and even who got "swag". In fact, I bet the rest missed out on SWAG due to postage blowing the budget!

I am disappointed in MS for this poor execution of the Iris. The Server 5 unlock piece still shows the locked image covering the server (it peeks through when loading), the GPS coords were corrected too late to be of use, and now all of the inconsistencies point to more of incompetence on MS's side rather than "intentional" misdirection. Imagine the bugs you'll encounter when you play Halo3 (despite the hours of testing) . . .

I guess that's par for any of MS's stuff.

This will probably be my last post. I'm feeling a bit embarassed to have been part of this.

Good luck to all and happy gaming!
