That is spooky...
Up until 2 minutes ago I had only heard the recording that gave the sound
its name of "bloop" because that is what it sounds like. To say I was
underwhelmed is not enough. I was even going to flame you!
Then I noticed that the web page I was listening to it on said that this is recorded at 16x speed. Why? So I hunted down the original and listened.
Very, very spooky... maybe that really IS where JJ got his idea from.

The bloop at its original speed. I had never heard it until tonight.
Very creepy sound, especially considering the back story.

Who gives a crap about a stupid ass roar!
That is the only update the world's largest movie studio can do? What a lame ass addition to an already so called lame ass ARG.
the sound is the biggest clue...so they said way back when the movie was beginning to build hype and had everyone beginning to buzz about it.
So, it seems they may be emphasizing that.

Keep in mind too, that Bloop was recorded underwater and it was anywhere from two to six miles under the sea. It was picked up by sensors several thousand miles away. I know those sensors are incredibly sensitive--they were used during the Cold War to detect submarines, but the noise was picked up by several sensors, allowing them to triangulate to find the approximate location of the source. What the beastie would sound like out of the water is anyone's guess. I personally like the Bloop theory, but don't think the sound is that similar (though it's not entirely dissimilar, either). I just think Bad Robot is going to make an oblique reference to Bloop during the film.
If spec analysis of the teaser roars (trailer and now on 1-18-08.com) does, indeed, show some similarity to Bloop, then I think that's the right track to follow. But, at the same time, the one thing that Bad Robot is not going to do is give away the monster--they may give us all sorts of clues, but then linking it to Bloop would be way cool, but doesn't give away the beast because no one knows what the hell Bloop is anyway.
Anyhoo, Bloop is super-cool (much more than any movie monster) and it would be a nice touch for Bad Robot to draw some sort of link between the Beast that Ate New York and the Bloop-meister.

I have to agree with the original posted. What's the big freakin' deal about a roar on a website?
Once again, this is VIRAL MARKETING - IT'S NOT AN ARG!
If I ever have to market anything, at least I know that nerds and geeks are the most gullible people in the world.

And you gotta give it to J.J. Abrams. This has gotta be the MOST effective advertising for the money you can get. Make a 2 minute trailer, make a flash thingy for a website with very non-revealing pictures and a roar, a fake company website, and several myspace pages... and let people argue about spectrum analysis pictures on forums like these. Its pure genious marketing. Tell the people almost nothing about the movie except enough to get them interested, then let word of mouth and youtube and forums do all the hard work.
This is not to say we shouldnt at least think about the roar. No its not going to reveal the number 42* to us, but its something else to think about.
*points if you get the reference

What's six times nine?
Anyway, to the topic:
Has somebody suggested yet that we pull a Star Trek IV and play the clip as if it were underwater? I don't mean literally submerge your speakers into water and play the clip, although that might be easier. The Bloop was recorded underwater, and, if that's going to be the "control", let's test this clip to see how it would sound underwater, and perhaps test it to see what it would sound above water, incase it was actually "recorded" below.

I actually think this sounds less like the Bloop creature than the roar from the trailer. Still rooting for the Bloopie though!
