I think the ending to War of the Worlds was brilliant. Welles really knew what he was doing, it wasn't just "then we blew up the mothership and the day was saved. Go humanity!", it was something much more humbling. I liked it.

The movie, though... that didn't make any damn sense. The kid got consumed in an epic fireball on a hill, then shows up at his grandma's without a scratch, or an explanation. I think the explosion propelled his humvee into orbit, where it circled the planet for a few days before hitching a ride with E.T. and zooming down to the house, unharmed.

a good ending

a good ending for the movie would have been American godzilla (the baby one at the end of the movie) rises out of the ocean and whoops ass only to have all citezins of the world to yell at him for being in the horrible movie and he returns to the ocean in shame!
the kid that returened was actually an alien in disguise. dum dum duuuum

It's not a damn robot. It's a giant monster. If JJ wanted to make "our own" Godzilla, he wouldn't make it a stupid robot called Chocolate Rage.

Unfortunately, I have to agree. A giant mascot coming to life isn't scary, it's hilarious. Ever seen Ghostbusters? Actually, I think there was a Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episode roughly along the lines of giant mascots coming to life...

Also, about the "they didn't expect it to be alive" thing; When there is a giant explosion, nobody assumes that something huge and alive is attacking the city. They think "terrorists", or "accident". So you can imagine the guys surprise when he realises that a huge monster is squishing up the city.

For someone who doesn't believe in overanalyzing the facts, I think you're overanalyzing the "alive and huge" thing.

Sure, Ad Hominem is the best argument of all, isn't it?

Anyway, if J.J. Wanted to make it scary, I'm sure he could. I am extremely familiar with mascots coming to life in shows, but that doesn't mean that it CAN'T be done in a scary manner. It's just that so far, we've seen cases of this only when it's presented in a funny manner. Ghostbusters and The Simpsons are comedies, mind you.

To just prove that this is possible, just work on it the opposite way. Take the scariest movie you know, and get someone to make a doodle or cariacture of the primary evil.

In fact, look at those bobblehead dolls they made of pinhead and Freddy Krueger. That doesn't make the movies cute and fluffy.

But to be fair, either of our examples aren't accurate because what I proposed was actually cute mascot - evil monster, and while they share similarities, I don't expect that the monster in the movie will look anywhere near as cute as what it does on the site.

Hey, at least it's better than a giant evil whale, right?

Oh, Heavenly Father, PLEASE!!!!

PLEASE no more giant flowers!!! I still think of this horribleness (new word? dunno): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godzilla_vs._Biollante. I'm up for just about any theory at this point. I did mention in another thread that I'm bored, but this thread piqued my interest a bit. I went onto the 1-18-08 site and waited (and waited) for the roar - to me, it sounded very said and mournful, or like whatever it was was in pain.

Taking the theory in this thread a bit further, perhaps what Ganu made to wreak havoc on NYC (or the US - 6 flavors, enough to destroy other major metropolitan cities), didn't really want to do his "bidding", or was put in pain to get pissed off enough to destroy whatever was in it's path. Or, it could have been sent over by Ganu's company as a gift (a Trojan horse, if you will), then unleashed on the city to exact his revenge for his mother's death. I just want to see the gorram movie!

It could be anything at this point. I'm not bashing too many theories (but no Voltron, please).

Dear people,

I like the way you're thinking.
But I had some strange hypothesis:
What if the monster won't be shown at all? I mean, it would be really scary movie. Because every visualisation is perishable, but our imagination is always authentical.

Look at the horror movies of the 20-30ies in XX century - they are for us naive and funny, but for the audience of the 20ies they were scary.

I can understand, what JJ Abrams means, if he says, we need our own monster like Gozilla, and "King Kong is adorable". He means the monster that can outmatch our imagination, and that isn't that sympathetic.

So if he won't show any monster, if he'll only show the panic and fear and tryings to escape - it would be scary today and next year and in 50 years, it would be authentical in its fearness.

What dou you think about it?

I feel like im being spoon fed with a sharp fork. Like they're trying to keep the hype up but they forget and they suddenly remember that they have millions of fans stumbling over each other so to satisfy our hunger they give us an underrated treat. All the 'hints' they've given dont really tell us anything that we dont already know or have ssumed. So possibly maybe these are like pre-hints! :p
