Marlboro - Outwit the West 3 Competition Came home today and found this (see pic) sitting on the coffee table.
I didn't know there was a 1st or 2nd round of this, but anyway, it's a set of 100 riddles or clues that involve locations. You have to figure out the locations, drive through or visit all of them and find answers to the puzzles or riddles as you take the trip. Some of them are simply answers, others require you to take pictures or print stuff. (It seems like it may be possible to solve most of the puzzles without going anywhere, but the picture ones would require a little more work)
1,000,000 dollar (little finger to mouth) grand prize for whoever gets the most answers right.
My favorite part of this though is the entry rules packet, Step 1:
Quote:
Pick your team - You'll be the Team Captain, so grab 3 friends and make your team. Each Team Member must be a smoker 21 years of age or older, a resident of the 50 United States or DC, and have a valid, government-issued photo ID.
Must be a smoker? lol, uh....
And there's no star on that, not sure if that means you have to be addicted or just smoke once a year, no indication if cloves count, or if you have to inhale versus smoking a cigar. I have a feeling the vast majority of people here don't smoke, but for 250k of the prize, might be worth a few coughing fits...

For some reason the fact that it's a cigarette company makes me queasy.
Using ARGs to promote something hazardous to your health just seems...

Yeah, because quitting smoking is really easy.

How do they define 'smoker' -- someone who has smoked at least one puff from one cigarette, etc., 2 pack per day minimum?

It is. Really. I did it 3-4 times already and plan on doing it again.

I won a Marlboro comp once and you have to swear that you smoke. I had to be trained to smoke by a friend, who let me know when to light up when a rep was in sight. I had already been taught to smoke by another friend for a stage part, but it wasn't very convincing. Of the 10 finalists, one was a lad whose doctor father refused to let him participate, one was an elegant woman who would only smoke Sobranie cocktail cigarettes, despite endless Marlboro being available, and another just said I don't smoke, tough. On the final night I thought I was rumbled cos one of their team said "you don't really smoke do you". Of course I do I said, and in case anyone from their firm is reading this "of course I do".

Yeah! All we had to worry about before was the insomnia, caffiene addiction (usually together) and occasional loss of a social life, now this?! Awful.
No really, it's sick. Boycott Marlburo, buy other cigarettes (don't)
*protests*

Insomnia doesn't cause cancer and make you smell bad.

I can't tell - but this seems like a scavenger hunt more than an ARG.

Well, if you forget to take a shower you might start to smell bad.

It seems like it's somewhere inbetween the two. But I guess it also depends on how you define an ARG.
This has lots of riddles and puzzles + large scale scavenging.
*shrug*
I'll post more info about the game sometime this weekend.

Ok, pardon the long response time. The only thing it says in the rules/entry booklet is that:
Quote:
Any questions about signing up? Just call 1-800-MARLBORO between blah blah M-F. Please have the promotional code below handy when you call.
PROMOTIONAL CODE: 1179

Completed registration forms must be received by Friday, September 29, 2006.
I asked my roommate who got this how he got it, and apparently he filled out one of those "give me your social security number and I'll give you something back" forms to get a free pack of smokes for his friend. Somehow that led to him getting mailed this (he doesn't smoke, so that's his best guess as to where this came from).
I think Marlboro may be trying to keep this on the down-low and not really advertise it, because it could easily be taken as another ad campaign to get people to smoke. By only sending it out to people who claimed they were smokers to begin with, no one can claim ill intent.
