DbD in the IRC channel, and my girlfriend both think it could be Pagliacci.

I guess we'll have to wait until the site's bandwidth is renewed~

EDIT: My girlfriend (who is too shy to join uF), found http://econ.la.psu.edu/~hbierens/Voices/Caruso_vesti_la_giubba.mp3

I'm almost positive its a match. Vesti la Giubba from Pagliacci.

Bandwidth

I haven't had a GeoCities site in a LONG time, when do they open bandwidth back up after you've gone over your limit?

p.s. thanks Hikari and Xestrix for posting the .wma file

[EDIT] It helps to read Yahoo!'s help pages. It looks like it's every hour and the limit is 4MB/hr. No wonder the site went down so quick with the addition of the .wma file.

And generally it refreshes each day, so that probably the longest we'll have to wait?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://us.geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/pagliacci

It would seem we were right, the site is back up Very Happy

Please, if you can, download the wma from either my site or Hikari's upload! We don't want the site down every five minutes!

EDIT: The page had some hidden binary at the bottm that translated to
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://www.geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/harlequin

which is another wma, please wait a moment and download it from me, not the site!

EDIT: Well, the site is down again :/ But I do have the audio file for you all: http://xestrix.com/dev/storage/ARG/harlequin/harlequin.wma

EDIT: I cleaned up a bit of the static and amplified the voice to an understandable / audible form: http://xestrix.com/dev/storage/ARG/harlequin/harlequin-clean.mp3

The words from the Pagliacci page.

Quote:
This dance is over.
It isn't the same.

You miss The Harlequin.

If only you could hear her speak once more...

Still no luck on the translation :/

I did however build a quickstart for anyone wanting to jump right in:

[THE HARLEQUIN SAYS]
I: Email
| |
| 1: From: TheHarlequinSays(SPLAT)Gmail.com > "Remember me!" [attachment: img]
| | |
| | i: The attached image leads to http://www.myspace.com/theharlequinsays
| | ii: The mySpace provides us with two new images: [img][img]
| |
| 2: From: TheHarlequinSays(SPLAT)Gmail.com > "wikipedia it."
| |
| i: Wikipedia confirms the 3-sided figure to be a triskelion, leading to http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/
|
II: GeoCities
| |
| 1: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/
| | |
| | i: A cryptogram is found in plain sight after the question: "what does the harlequin say?"
| | ii: Solving the cryptogram with the viginere key "rememberme" gives us:
| | |
| | | saint-saens plays his piano
| | | the dance, it begins.
| | | imperative that know your next step --
| | | don't fall.
| | |
| |iii: "saint-saens" and "the dance" leads us to the opus: "Danse Macabre",
| | iv: Appending the GeoCities URL gives us: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/dansemacabre
| |
| 2: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/dansemacabre
| | |
| | i: Another text block gave us some key phrases: "the more modern version, though.", "it's a series", "there are still more after."
| | ii: Google brings us to the "Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter" book series, "Book 14: Danse Macabre" is followed by "Book 15: The Harlequin"
| |iii: Appending the GeoCities URL gives us: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/theharlequin
| |
| 3: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/theharlequin
| | |
| | i: Another text block, some more key phrases: "but you have imbibed too often, and now your head is hazy", "you thought your kind could hold their drink!",
| | "they do make the best kind, after all...dark, rich, and creamy.", "Go hIfreann leat!"
| | ii: Everything points towards ... Guinness! (An Irish brew)
| |iii: Appending the GeoCities URL gives us: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/guinness
| |
| 4: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/guinness
| | |
| | i: Key Phrases: "all you can think about are the diamonds", "she stole your heart", "it must've been that clover", "what did i miss?"
| | ii: The phrases all contain a suit from a standard deck of cards, the missing suit is spades
| |iii: Appending the GeoCities URL gives us: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/spades
| |
| 5: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/spades
| |
| i: Another text block, this time a dead end
|
III: MySpace
| |
| 1: Pics
| |
| i: A new image is uploaded: [img]
| ii: The image contains the text: "uttara ka 20" and "purvi 77"
| iii: Google reveals the words uttara and purvi to be Hindi, and translates them to north and east
| iv: Locating the global coordinates [20 north, 77 east] reveals the center of India
| v: Appending the GeoCities URL gives us: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/india
|
IV: GeoCities
| |
| 1: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/india
| | |
| | i: Key Phrase: "you know the source of her problems."
| | ii: Viewing the page source reveals: nextstep="diamondsragirlsbestfriend"
| |iii: Appending the GeoCities URL gives us: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/diamondsragirlsbestfriend
| |
| 2: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/diamondsragirlsbestfriend
| | |
| | i: An image of an engagement ring gives us are next url
| | ii: Appending the GeoCities URL gives us: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/engagementring
| |iii: [NOTE]: The ring is engraved: "With all my love -J"
| |
| 3: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/engagementring
| | |
| | i: This time a set of symbols appears to be the main element
| | ii: Google reveals them to be an old venetian script called Venetico
| |iii: This reference to Venice leads us to our next url
| | iv: Appending the GeoCities URL gives us: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/venice
| | v: [NOTE]: The symbols can be translated to the English phrase: "She loved you"
| |
| 4: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/venice
| | |
| | i: Another cipher confronts us immediately
| | ii: Running the cipher through a cryptogram solver reveals: "EVEN THOUGH YOU DANCE WITH ANOTHER, SHE WILL NEVER MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE COLUM?INA."
| |iii: The key name is assumed to be Columbina, and wikipedia informs us that Columbina is a character in a play, and her lover, is the Harlequin
| | iv: The play turns out to be Commedia Dell'Arte, which brings us to our next URL
| | v: Appending the GeoCities URL gives us: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/commediadellarte
| |
| 5: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/commediadellarte
| | |
| | i: This time we are only given an image, which thanks to a familiar blue outline, is indicated to be a link
| | ii: Clicking on the image we are given: http://xestrix.com/dev/storage/ARG/harlequin/opera1.wma [media mirrored to save site bandwidth]
| |iii: [NOTE]: http://xestrix.com/dev/storage/ARG/harlequin/opera1.mp3 is provided for those without wma support
| | iv: Listening to the opera, it is identified "Vesti la Giubba" from Pagliacci, an opera concerning a man in a Commedia Dell'Arte
| | v: Pagliacci turns out to be the correct information and our next url is set
| | vi: Appending the GeoCities URL gives us: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/pagliacci
| |
| 6: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/pagliacci
| | |
| | i: A hidden string of binary leads us farther on this page
| | ii: Converting the binary to ascii reveals: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/harlequin
| |
| 7: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/harlequin
| | |
| | i: http://geocities.com/triskelionharlequin/ redirects us to http://xestrix.com/dev/storage/ARG/harlequin/harlequin.wma [media mirrored to save site bandwidth]
| | ii: harlequin.wma turns out to be a very quiet, very static-y French dialogue, possible a poem being read
| |iii: The wma file was augmented to clear some of the static and amplify the voice, file at http://xestrix.com/dev/storage/ARG/harlequin/harlequin-clean.wma
| | iv: [NOTE] http://xestrix.com/dev/storage/ARG/harlequin/harlequin.mp3 is provided for those without wma support
| | v: [NOTE] http://xestrix.com/dev/storage/ARG/harlequin/harlequin-clean.mp3 is provided for those without wma support
[END OF CURRENT PROGRESS]

Xestrix, very nice. Good outline structure, it shouldn't be difficult at all for people to jump in.

Except if you don't know French at this point ... Wink

Twee is having a listen for me and from what she has been able to translate, we may need to find a native speaker.

I listened the file. As far as I can say, this is French (I am French myself) but seems to be spoken my a non native speaker. The pronunciation is clumsy and there are large parts I cannot understand. It seems to be a love poem. It could be (badly) translated from another language because the syntax seems very much off....

Here is what I could get (questions marks are for the parts I cannot get):
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

"Nous n'avons jamais dit que notre amour était l'arbre vert aussi invariable que la mer, mais si vous ??????? pense à toutes les choses nous avons partagées avant vous ?? ne pense pas à des choses qui auraient pu avoir été ??? silencieux et demissionné ??? pense aux choses que nous ne ferrons jamais, il n'y aura jamais un jour quand je ne vous penserai pas à"

Which would translate to:
"We have never said that our love was the green tree as invariable as the sea, but if you ????? think of all the things we have shared before you ??? do not think of the things which could have been ??? silent and dismissed ??? do not think of the things we will never do; there will never be a day when i won't think about you"

I tried to google part of it (both in French & in English) but nothing of interest came up.... it is possibly because of my translation... Does the first line with the green tree and the sea ring a bell for anyone? the rest of the poem is probably less usable.
I hope this helps.
