When I posted the other night about the EC Press release looking different than it had before, someone posted the Ty notes and we left it at that. The thing is...it looked really different to me! Shocked It opened in Wordpad and that's how it saved it to my computer.

It won't let me copy and paste this, but it has something similar to this in it
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
PM TKIETH TTD
TKIETH ITd
TKIETH )Ud
TKIETH MUd
TKIETH cUd
TKIETH -VD
TKIETH (left arrow)Wd

The M in PM is actually a musical note symbol. There are parts of the document that make me think negative space as well. Cool

Where do you find this? I can't see this anywhere in the document, even when I turn show nonprinting characters.

I also downloaded a new copy of the press release and used diff to compare with the version I originally downloaded, and no differences.

Did you try saving it from this link
Download Ec_Press_release2.doc
then opening it in Wordpad? This is the only way it will download now (from the TEC News link) on my home computer. There is a lot more in it than just the TKIETH stuff. If you can't see it I can get screen caps once I get home this evening. The document won't copy and paste and it won't print. Confused

The sound of the first bell "What is the Electric Church" is the same as the last one "Home". I'm back to the sound code.

The musical notes can be represented as letters. In some places it starts with do = C, re = D...., in other places it start with do = A, re = B...

I think I'm onto something with the blogad_stream.gif.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://img212.imageshack.us/my.php?image=blogad5xm6.png

The data appears to be grouped into 4-bit chunks. I'll try transcribing it into hex and see if it yields intelligible ASCII.

Edit: Of course, the chunks aren't where they seem to be, because getting those neat lines reduces the bandwidth. The 4-bit chunks are the ones with crosses through them. My outer border is completely wrong. I was chunking half a period out of phase.

Edit: Each "4-bit chunk" only encodes 1 bit of data. I'm a bit slow at this today. http://img231.imageshack.us/my.php?image=blogad6iq6.png

Binary content (1 and 0 are arbitrary, bitwise-not may be needed):

Using upper left bits, with black=0, white=1:

Ugh. Assume a cleaner character size. 8 bits would be reasonable.
Then again, we had 5-bit characters earlier in the trail.

35 rows. 455 bits.

Edit III: Reading down the columns 7 bits at a time as ASCII doesn't seem to work, with or without bitwise-not. The 13x35 dimensions are hell on my computery instincts -- who writes in binary and uses odd numbers of bits? My best guess would be that it involves either bizarre word lengths (it has happened before) or parity bits. I haven't found a way to divide the data into parity-consistent chunks, though.

Maybe the more experienced ARGers here can figure it out.

Tried the following:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Reading down columns 5 bits at a time using the 5-bit encoding from earlier yields the following. I stuck to the 0=space convention; I suspect that the extraalphabetical characters (A=27, etc) are meant to represent punctuation.
I may be completely on the wrong track, but it feels like there are more vowels than chance in this gibberish. Perhaps vowels and consonants are rotated separately?

It looks like the author is doing a reading in Brooklyn on September 24th. I might try to go. It could be fun.

I found it posted on his blog: under events

Interestingly, converting pictures to bits is exactly what a stream cipher is all about, it was just too advanced for me.

However, the 5 point binary represents a letter at a time, and values of 27 generally don't mean A... but I suppose it's not entirely possible. I would have to assume that it either is a . or a 1, which would be hte next logical mark in a sequence.

either way, i did it to the first set of 00000 and it makes no sense at all, but since there are rows of 13, i will try to rot 13 them

I didn't literally mean A-E. I just needed placeholders for characters that didn't fit into the alphabet, so I used capital letters. I'm inclined to think they mean punctuation.

Far more likely, though, is that I'm totally off-base with the chunk-by-5 thing, and there's some standard 2D barcode scheme that will tell us how to decrypt. None of the ones I've found so far have behave the way this image does, though.

Anyway. Good idea trying rot13.

Using those letters straight, and their ROT 13, with the key blogads, yeilded absolutely nothing.

I noticed an 8 bit pattern here, which is standard binary, doing the same thing you did, however I got that weird looking Y thing (the Y with the line through it) for the second letter and a Z for the first. I was thinking each 8 piece section, but maybe I'll try simply going across or down???

EDIT: Going by single row and column and by grouped row and column all yeilded unnatural characters. I'm so confused as to what to do now.

I don't suppose the username and password could be the comment that Ty added to the press release? Like Tkeith1 Griffin.

Try to google e "the end is near +/- friend or brother. Because up it's friend, and down is bother.
We might find something. One of the things I found is this. http://www.noreast.com/montauk/image.cfm?image_ID=9482

I think this is a very well made little game/ promotion. I think the first codex (with the song lyrics) was taken down because it had been hacked by Ty. Ty changed the codex text to the lyrics. The change came to the church's attention so they took it down. (after we had found it of course.)

I'm not sure where the idea came from that the game wasn't completed by the designer earlier. Just my opinion, but this game doesn't seem to be advancing by META thinking. All the codes you guys have solved have been solvable without thinking "what are the designers doing and why."

ah re Ty's comments on the press release:
Quote:
I looked over the comments (i had never seen them before). i believe it is a clue, but a clue that we are past already. it seems that that was our first clue, telling us to talk to ty for more information. however lola (where is she now anyway? vman?) broke the access code before anyone even saw the press release so it was old hat by then.

Yes this makes sense too. The talk to Ty first says did you get the years (yes, access code)..then says the second one is two different codes...(which I think meant the username and password were encoded, rather deviously, in two different kinds of binary.)

That might be the IG reason for taking it down, but it was definitely one of those random message generator things, ipsum thing.

Somers already admitted that the game isn't finished, so while they may be well many steps ahead, we never advanced prior without a simple wag from the first username/password. And also, there was no way possible for us to have gotten ahold of the first base 2 binary code that started us in the right direction, which was given to us by Ty after awhile.

So either, they gave up on anyone trying to figure out it, or they were just biding their time. The evidence presented thus far suggests the latter, and the same in this scenario as well.
