Puzzle of the Month
Shinteki is sonsoring/running a competitive effort

Received the following in an email, today:

Hey puzzle lovers,

Shinteki is excited to announce something new for our free Puzzle of the Month in 2012.

This year, all of the puzzles will be authored by Todd Etter. You've seen some of his puzzles in the past, and we're really looking forward to seeing what he has in store for you in the coming months.

We are streamlining the PotM with a new login system. Solvers will need to set up an account and then log in to submit solutions. This is free, painless, secure, and we absolutely won't share any info with anyone. We will be starting up a year-long leader board in addition to the monthly leader board. There will be a new point system for each puzzle, and we'll keep track of cumulative scores throughout the year.

Why are we doing this? Well, for fun mainly. But we're also going to be giving away some prizes at the end of the year. Woo, prizes! But don't worry--this won't be an "only the top scorers win" proposition. Instead, it will be more like a weighted lottery. Every solve, no matter how early or late in the month it might come, will increase your chances of winning a year-end prize.

The first PotM will go live on Wednesday, January 25th. If you want to participate in the 2012 contest, we suggest that you set up your account now, so that you are ready on the 25th. Make sure to add infoSPLATshinteki.com to your address book so that your log in confirmation stays out of your junk folder. Create your account at http://www.shinteki.com/potm/

This is the only announcement we will make regarding the 2012 PotM on our general mailing list. To receive monthly PotM reminders and other PotM related announcements, choose the notification option when you create a log in account, or follow PlayShinteki on Twitter or Facebook .

Thank you,
-the Shinteki Crew

Shinteki has it's roots in "The Game" and classic puzzle hunts.
If you're having TMT withdrawl, this might help.

ETA: Based on past invites for Skinteki games, proper... This could conceivably, be one.

The first puzzle was released yesterday, and very quickly the first ten leaders earned their bonus points. You can still solve for standard points, until January 30 at 6pm Pacific when the first hint will be posted.

i'm bumping this in search of help with the March puzzle. I solved 95% of it within the first hour, but am stuck at what the final step might be. I know there will be hints released soon, but the early ones are merely starter clues, not what i need. Anyone out there willing to slip me a nudge? Direct IM or PM is probably better than a spoiler post, for now. Thanks!

(yes, i know this is a competition, but a friendly one. besides, there are people working in teams, and that's hardly fair)

ugh, this month's (June) was a killer for me. I see doublecross made it just under the wire before Hint 3 was released, and I came in just afterwards. I think the problem for me was the multiple levels of abstraction, and the specialized knowledge needed that I didn't even know existed so I never knew what to look up. Now I know. Thank you, Hint 3.

I really don't have time for these kinds of things, these days... But, I just got this in my mailbox:
(Including the disclaimer and everything because with these guys, you never know. It could part of the puzzle).

Hey puzzle lovers,

Shinteki is excited to announce the return of our free Puzzle of the Month in 2013!

This year, all of the puzzles will be co-authored by Ian Tullis and Mark Halpin. The year will be divided into two consecutive 6-month competitions, with scores accumulating during each period. The setup will be similar to 2012, but with some small changes that we think you'll really enjoy. The full rules for 2013 can be found here: http://www.shinteki.com/potm/potm2013rules.html

Why are we doing this? Well, for fun mainly. But we're also going to be giving away some prizes at the end of each 6-month competition. Woo, prizes! But don't worry—this won't be an "only the top scorers win" proposition. Instead, it will be more like a weighted lottery. Every solve, no matter how early or late in the month it might come, will increase your chances of winning a prize.

The first PotM will go live at 6:00 pm Pacific tomorrow, January 15th. If you already have a PotM account from the 2012 contest, there is no need to re-register. If you are new to Shinteki's PotM and want to participate in the 2013 contest, welcome! We recommend that you set up your account now, so that you're ready to go on the 15th. You can create your account at http://www.shinteki.com/potm/

This is the only announcement we will make regarding the 2013 PotM on our general mailing list. To receive monthly PotM reminders and other PotM related announcements, choose the notification option when you create a log in account (or when you log in to your existing account), or follow us at twitter.com/shinteki or www.facebook.com/PlayShinteki.

Thanks, and happy puzzling!

—the Shinteki Crew
