 [HAAS][OOG]Nereid Communications

So www.nercomm.net appears to be a fan-created continuation of the ARG saga created for the Alpha Omega tabletop RPG game. The registration info for the site shows that it was created AFTER August 1st.

Domain servers in listed order:
NS35.DOMAINCONTROL.COM
NS36.DOMAINCONTROL.COM

The start went to a fan board saying "some subscribers" received an email from Van Mantra. It appears this was not true. (It was announced at http://ethanhaas.org/cloverfield2/?p=45) The so-called email:

Quote:
The powers that be are scrambling. We have them on the run, confused and scattered, struggling to find a way to stop us. There are fortifying their network. We must go beyond that in order to ensure the truth is revealed. The companions of the great water god try to spread his lies. They must be stopped. Look to NerComm; soon their door shall be opened, and the truth shall be revealed.

BX71RLD5

Summary of comments in the source code for various Nercomm pages:
- The truth must be revealed before all is lost.
- They are fortifying their network. We must use their own tool against them in order to ensure the truth is revealed.
- They seek only to create creatures against nature, against humanity.
- They seek to extend their grasp over all mankind. Once they control, they rule.
- He is the mighty sword that is swung by the masters, deluded to believe they are right.
- He gives up everything on the path to destruction.
- The companions of the great water god try to spread his lies. They must be stopped.
- Soon their door shall be opened, and the truth shall be revealed.

Email response from infoSPLATnercomm.net:

Thank you for your interest in Nereid Communications.

We are in the process of relocating our base of operations to the
Pacific Northwest. Once our network infrastructure is in place, we will
provide our services to the general public.

If this is a technical support question or concern, please contact Todd
Nazer at Nereid Network Operations.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Nereid Communications

Emailing archibald.grahamSPLATnercomm.net yields the same plus this:

Quote:
I am currently out of the office on corporate business, and will
respond to your message as soon as possible.

Emailing todd.nazerSPLATnercomm.net gets you something better:

Quote:
Thank you for contacting Network Operations. This is an auto-responder,
and there is no need to reply to it. We have received your request for
technical support and will respond as soon as possible.

Here are the current issues we are having as of August 10th:

1) Galatea is having intermittent problems, and several users have been
reporting slow response times. Until the server can be analyzed and
corrected, all accounts have been moved to Ione. Please update your
connections accordingly.

2) Several users in the Florida and Georgia areas are experiencing
problems connecting to Dione. It appears this is a network routing issues
with the communications providers of the area; we are already in contact
with them, and we hope to resolve the problem as soon as possible.

Thank you for using Nereid Communications.

So the servers mentioned as being at Nercomm do seem to exist:
http://galatea.nercomm.net
http://ione.nercomm.net
http://dione.nercomm.net

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
At the login page from Nercomm's web site, you can put in Todd Nazer's employee ID from his email signature as the login. Use the EHWR number as the password. You now have access to Todd Nazer's emails and an instant messenger conversation with his coworker.
login: TN811425
password: S7DG8SX09

If this is all kosher, I now have Kellie Graham's employee number and her login password. However, the combination comes up as being invalid. The password is one digit smaller than the only other one I can compare it with. Perhaps I'm missing something?

Kellie's login

Thanks for figuring out the login info for Todd. I had emailed archibald.grahamSPLATnercomm.net and didn't receive anything (it must not have been activated yet).

That may be the problem with Kellie's login info... if it hasn't been made live yet we won't be able to get in, so I'll just keep trying now and then. Very Happy

Aha! I was able to log into Kellie's account. Quite a bit more is there:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
All the servers so far are named after mythical nereids. I looked up a list of the most famous of these and found three additional servers.

http://amphitrite.nercomm.net/ - Amphitrite is Tritons mother
http://erato.nercomm.net/ - Erato is best known as one of the three Muses
http://thetis.nercomm.net/ - Achilles' mother, she made her son immortal save for his heel

I guess this means that Kellie is the operation's Achilles' heel.
server: http://thetis.nercomm.net/
login: KG655321
password: BX71RLD5

This then leads to an encryption/image puzzle. Oh, dear. Laughing

I'm getting an invalid login error with that user/pw. Has anyone else had better luck?

You tried it on the server I mentioned? It doesn't work on any of the others. Just to be sure I posted the information correctly, I just logged out and back in again.

I wonder what kind of code this is, it is found in Kellie's Trash folder and I believe it's from Van Mantra. In the IM folder John mentions a start key but I don't know if it pertains to the code from VM or not. I think it's supposed to be the journal pages but that doesn't make any sense. Confused

There may be more than one puzzle here. There's reason to think we might be able to decipher Kellie's security encryption key with Triton Enterprises. There's also something going on with Kellie trying to pass along encrypted information to/from an interloper in the system calling him/herself "Truth" - Kellie thinks this is Van Mantra.

That text string looks like a PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) encryption signature, as used in Triton's instant messenger program. Seems to me it was from Kellie to Truth but never got sent.

This image is related to Kellie's visual encryption key with Triton:

She sent it to John as an attachment when she asked for his help. He warned her not to send the key to anyone via email. He advised her to decode it with the "starting key" or "lead key" she was supposed to have gotten verbally. This should have been in the form of a letter, ex: g.

Encryption Key

I would have no idea how to decipher that key. Embarassed

How did you find the names of the other servers? (amphitrite, thetis and erato)

I'm guessing the visual key is a bunch of symbols for the 26 letters and the numbers 0-9. We don't have anything to decode with them, though.

As for figuring out the other server names...

I've worked with network groups before. Your typical server farm starts off with a theme and sticks as closely to it as possible. So if you have three servers named after mythical nereids, you're going to continue using nereid names as you add servers. So I went to Wikipedia's nereid entry and plugged a bunch of the listed names in front of nercomm.net.

Here's what's bugging me. Kellie can no longer make so much as an email rough draft, and instant messaging is cut off as well. Assuming she completes work for her father and/or Truth, how will she let anybody know?

I think Kellie is probably as MIA as John is now (and who knows about Van Mantra).. I tried emailing to the other employees we had names for, Cleo Williams, Allen Feinman and John Wainright but they all bounced back.

Aha! Finally got in--my cut and paste was a little sloppy. Embarassed

Has anyone emailed the code (key?) from Kellie's trash message to Van? If he never got it, that seems to me the logical thing to do (to help him.)

Yeah, I got the same form response for him I've seen since August 1st. I suppose he might respond later, but I kinda doubt it.

I also tried various combinations of "truth" or "unknown" at Nercomm and Triton. But those just bounce back.

Encryption Key

I am trying to figure out a method to solve the encryption key, from what I gather they are based on an algorythm, which means in order to solve it you would have to know calculus or be a computer programer so a computer would solve it.

I don't know calculus, I struggled with college algebra. I keep looking for examples of other ciphers that have used a key like this but haven't found any yet.

I dunno that math skills per se are what's in order here. I get the feeling I'm missing something. Either I'm literally waiting for an update or else there's something I've been overlooking.

So here's a rundown of the other number-letter variables that stand a chance of being related to the overall puzzle:

Cleo Williams: CW611723, cleo.williams@TE5192
John Wainwright : JW813414, john.wainright@TR5119
Allen Feinman: AF913412, allen.feinman@NC1774
Archibald Graham - archibald.graham@NC1912, then archibald.graham@DRC8112

R3C11-24
Van Mantra passed this code to Kellie Graham along with an encrypted file that has since been removed from the email by Corporate Security.

From the Ethan Haas journal pages:
417stjneh - Caph
6ld9102 - Gamma Cass
279fh7691 - Schedar
kbfm314008 - Ruchbah #1
u458402w - Ruchbah #2

Finally, it seems the header for the Nercomm site contains binary code. But it's hard to read and seems to fade out at the right edge, so I dunno.

The image Kellie sent over email looks to me like an overlay key, but the question is 'overlay of what?'

It could be a keyboard, keypad, that block of letters and numbers she emailed to Van, or I could be way off on how it works, but none of those nine dot squares appear to repeat.
