Logo Contest
EXTENDED

The logo contest has been extended, and they fixed the problem with the "z".

Working on fixing my logo.

Problem is, I am still not in a group.

"TASK ONE - DEADLINE EXTENDED: Submission deadline is now Wed. 9 PM PT/Thurs. 12 AM ET. As this is the first task, we want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to submit their best work. "

Ok, the first time was funny, the second time was a bit too much and the third time is getting annoying. We get the message, now stop spamming please.

My exciting conversation with the brick wall that is HR

SpaceBass wrote:
Hi!

I originally applied for the RM job at Nampa, ID, then got one of
those Error emails last week so I switched to one of the new branches,
Kalamazoo, as instructed and told my friends to re-apply with the new
code. I'm pretty sure I had way more than 15 people sign up on my code
but yesterday I got a rejection email and I'm still listed as a temp.
I considered giving it a third shot at another branch but there's no
way to tell which, if any, are still available. Can't you just assign
one to me and my group? I'm rather partial to Intercourse, PA, which
isn't on your list yet but sure should be as it seems somewhat
appropriate at this point. Razz

P.S. I might point out that there has been quite a bit of early
interest in this on Unfiction since we learned about it (
http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21152 ), it's been
mentioned at ARGNet (
http://www.argn.com/archive/000646game_tip_roundup.php ), and we've
talked it up in the last couple of ARGNetcasts (
http://www.argnetcast.info ). Jonathan Waite, who runs ARGNet, was
excited enough to make an orientation video for Kalamazoo (
http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=390809#390809 )
before I found out I was rejected.

I know all of the people in our group would love to be able to play
this game together but that interest may die if everyone gets split up
into random branches. We might even be able to give you some tips on
how to improve certain mechanics or to anticipate certain crowd
tendencies or reactions; we have a little experience in these kinds of
things. Wink

This is a joke, right? Thanks for actually answering my previous

SpaceBass wrote:
Wow, no it's not a joke, you actually did sign me up at Kalamazoo!
What the hell?!

So let's recap: I apply for Regional Manager at Nampa a couple of
weeks ago and sign up more than 15 people but I get an error message
saying there was a problem with my application and please reapply at
these new secret branches.

So I do just that and reapply immediately at Kalamazoo, pass around
the code again to everyone and then wait. And wait.

Then, an update! The Kalamazoo manager has been hired!

More waiting. Gee, it wasn't me, says the email, but if I want to try
again I can at another branch and if I got one of those error emails
then I should tell HR.

So since I did, I email as instructed. No response.

Then, after a few days of nada, my friend applies for Regional Manager
at another new branch (Elizabeth, NJ: you know, the one with the
letter "Z" that your logo maker apparently doesn't support) and I
re-apply to that as just an employee. And wait.

Nothing. He hears nothing.

Then, another update! An email saying I've been accepted as an
employee at Kalamazoo! Along with all my friends who also reapplied
elsewhere after the Kalamazoo Manager ignored them since being picked.

Seriously, is this just bad planning? Lack of development time? Too
many chefs in the kitchen pulling the actual workers in too many
directions? Because it's pretty incredibly pathetic. You invited me to
dance and then intentionally stomped on my toes. Kudos.

Cheers,
SpaceBass

SpaceBass wrote:
P.S. And after I sent that, I sighed and went back to once again
re-apply at Elizabeth with my friend's code. Witness the lovely
message:

The employee has already applied for this branch and branch code.

Ahh, of course. Why should I expect that the instructions (quoted
below) about how I can simply reapply elsewhere if I don't to work at
Kalamazoo (which I don't, see below also) would actually work? It's
not like anything else about this production seems to be working.

This really had so much promise. I haven't been interested in actually
playing a game for 2 years until this.

Meh.

Well, at least I got a reply finally so I guess you upheld the letter
of the bit about how you respond to all emails. Even if your response
was completely worthless. Part and parcel of your production, it seems

I'll be posting this thread online with your response. Enjoy your
continuing failure.

DMI (almost immediately) wrote:
Dear Sean,

Not everyone who wants to be a Regional Manager ends up becoming one. Some branches had dozens of managers vying for the title. Whoever got to the 15 confirmed employees first was the winner. Not to mention we restored the codes of dozens who initially received faulty codes. This helped tremendously in getting several pending branches open with their rightful managers. When you have 100 branches and tens of thousands of users, you see how these things play out.

The Elizabeth, NJ branch is next on the list to be opened. If you would rather belong to this branch when it opens than Kalamazoo, just let us know.

We receive a lot of emails here at Dunder Mifflin Infinity and we are doing our best to address everyone's feedback.

You know...
I've never watched The Office and that's probably not going to change.
But, your comments/emails are exactly what I envision as situations on the show. Smile

I *love* the Office. As a matter of fact, I've rushed my wife through the first 3 seasons in about a week and a half. But I call this bull Censored , and will probably not participate.

definitely don't let DMI determine your decision for watching The Office - it's an absolutely amazing show!

That said, space, you should tell them that there is definitely already at least 15 people who applied to Elizabeth under the same management code, and nothing's happened with the branch. If it's indeed the 'first' to reach 15 employees, then why is there still no regional manager?

But of course, that probably won't get answered any time soon anyway Razz

Sheesh. Drama at Dunder Mifflin! Confused

My current branch (Clearwater -- I'm just an employee, not a manager) actually shows two managers. There's a ton of confusion over that. Most branches I've heard of have opened up outside message boards because there are so many problems with the DMI branch boards.

I love the show, and I really wish this game had been handled a bit better. I fear big fallbacks like this will discourage other shows from creating their own games, and/or discourage The Office from continuing DMI once it gets on its feet.

Sad

Lesson to learn: when you make a major player mission out of recruiting members, you should be prepared for A LOT OF PLAYERS. It feels like the numbers took them by surprise. Hence their note:
Quote:
Employee applications have exceeded our expectations
.

The Office is a fantastic show, in my opinion. I would really like to see this online component level out to something playable asap because it's a great idea.

*holds out hope for DMI* Very Happy

I too applied to the Kalamazoo branch (for different reasons, though, it's my hometown), and was stuck in limbo for several days waiting for the RM to approve me (I don't think she was being malicious. She just hadn't logged in for a long time). When I was finally accepted yesterday into the branch, I was excited to see so many names that I recognized from previous outings here on UF. Sorry to hear that you're all transferring to Elizabeth.

SB, frustrating as your trials have been, I think they make sense. "Corporate" has stated that they don't open branches automatically, so even if you were the first to assemble 15 employees, Elizabeth isn't actually open yet, so when the RM from the last active branch in your queue finally woke up and accepted your Kazoo application, you were accepted there, even though you still have a pending transfer request to Elizabeth. When Elizabeth opens, that request should go through.

It's a big mess, yes, but I'm holding out hope that they'll work out the kinks. And I'm sticking with Kalamazoo for now.

branches

Well, I applied for Kalamazoo too, never heard from anyone at anytime. No e-mail ever. Reapplied for Elizabeth, still nothing.

Did hear from human resource department today, regarding the logo maker being fixed

"This was fixed yesterday. Please let us know if you are still experiencing issues."

Well, I'm having less problems than you guys I suppose.
I re-applied for Elizabeth just like everyone else, then got accepted to Kalamazoo. However, when I try to re-apply for Elizabeth again, I got the normal "Application sent, etc." message instead of the error.

as for other branches

Looks like Spokane is going to get overrun shortly. Gabe@Penny-Arcade managed to snag the regional manager slot there.

Orders of magnitude

DMI wrote:

Wow, those are really big numbers. I mean, the computers I have access to can only handle numbers that go up to 8192 before there is no way to solve a problem.

</sarcasm>

So, I'm seriously supposed to believe from this reply that however they are managing their applicants, it doesn't involve an automated, algorithmic approach that can scale up to the large level of interest and applications they were sure to receive? And that no one really thought of the idea that one way to handle this would be to give each manager + 15 or more that applied their own branch somewhere? I mean, they have the data structure to do it (the unique codes), and they can just randomly select locations from a long list of place names.

The rationale that pops into mind for why they wouldn't handle it in this fashion is that they don't want to have too many branches. But why would that be the case? I mean, first of all, why set a criterion of a manager plus 15 employees for a branch if you're not planning on having a lot of them. And why not have many, many branches unless your database backend / game engine cannot handle it? I mean computers are doing the heavy lifting here right, so it shouldn't be a problem. Well, maybe they have computers like mine, that still cannot handle numbers that large.

I think we're up around 25 employees by now, at last rushed count. Once again, DMI, you have about 5 hours to make this right*.

*While it doesn't seem like a lot of fun to issue empty ultimatums on a third-party message board, you should try it. Surprisingly fun. Oh, and I am going to make a "Welcome to the branch" video tonight, just in case.
