Where to begin?

Hi there! Just posting out of curiosity. I've had a game idea brewing in my head for a while, and I'd love to use it for an ARG. My question is, how do you start? Brainstorming, obviously...But is there like...ARG-running 101 out there, or somethin'? XD Sorry if this is a silly question, but I've thought of various ways to put my game-plot into play, and ARG seems like one of the better options.

Thanks!

Agent Pink

No 'ARGing 4 Dummies' I'm afraid, but as someone in a pretty similar situation to you, here's some advise:

Write. Constantly.

Write notes, write characters, write blog posts and plot arcs and set-pieces. Write 5 different endings and twice as many beginnings! Write it like a book, and whenever you reach a point where you think 'I could do two things here', write both. People love interaction and an ability to change the plot, so don't do what I did at the start and hem yourself in by thinking 'but this is what's supposed to happen!'.

Then, a few weeks later when you've nailed down a good flow from start to finish, put your feelers around for some interested parties to join your team. Don't do this alone!. You'll need at least some constructive criticism and probably a big hand in running it once it gets off the ground.

Take a long hard look at your idea. Seriously, is it original? If it's about a kidnapping or a murder or a shadowy cult, it needs a real fresh twist to make it stand out. If it's none of the above then I say, go for it regardless!

If you want you can send me a wee PM if you want someone to throw ideas at. Good luck!

keep in mind that your marking a world and not a book.

start with Brainstorming then work out all component parts of the world. i.e characters, groups, places.

Once you done this then work out how this component will interact with players. i.e. blogs, websites, phone calls.

then when this is done you can move onto working players into the story. how do they find each component [by puzzles] and what can they do to alter it.

this is how I work on games.

the other thing is the end. have in your mind how the whole thing will end. the antagonist character will what there end and even try to stop them along time before the end they just work around them. only let the players win at end. so you only need 2 or 3 endings. do not let players run the game of the tracks by letting them have a easy victory over the antagonist.

Make sure you know everything inside and out. You can't just have a general outline and hope that when you launch everything sort of falls into place. If you talk about a character's background, literally write down what it is. If you're going to have anything prewritten, write it beforehand. Make all your puzzles before so all you have to do is upload and you're done, etc.

Also, an idea that worked really well for me is that before you attempt to launch your first major ARG venture, create a small weeklong mini-ARG or CF that you can design in about 2 weeks and run for about 1. It will give you an idea of what PMing is like and really help you know what you need to do for your next, larger project.
