Aw Nuts: CBS Pulls Plug On Jericho
Final Episode Airs Tuesday, Promises To Tie Up Storyline

March 21, 2008

(CBS) "Jericho" has been canceled, and no amount of peanuts will bring it back.

"The March 25th episode of Jericho will be the series finale," CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler said in a statement. "Without question, there are passionate viewers watching this program; we simply wish there were more."

The show was canceled after its first season, but was resurrected when fans joined together and sent tens of thousands of pounds of peanuts to get the network to change its mind.

CBS ordered a second season of seven episodes which premiered on Feb. 12, 2008. Ratings never equaled the first season's numbers, and have taken a tumble since the premiere.

"We have no regrets bringing the show back for a second try," the network said. "We listened to our viewers, gave the series an opportunity to grow, and the producers put a great story on the screen. We're proud of everyone's efforts."

Producers hedged their bets by shooting two alternate endings to the final show, which airs Tuesday.

One is a cliffhanger that could have led to a third season and the other ending is said to bring "closure" to fans.

But, sources tell the Hollywood Reporter, there's enough wiggle room in the final episode to make room for new life of the series on cable.

I can't say I'm surprised.

I really enjoyed the first season, but this season has been a real disappointment.

The writing was terrible this season. Last season had a very good balance of character development and plot development. There's been no more character development this time. A series based on such a difficult premise had characters with "real" issues the show could lean on when the plot got too outrageous. They had stories of losing loved ones, struggling marriages, parent/child conflicts, politics and worries about how they would adapt & survive. Most of that got replaced by Jake trying to convince Colonel Beck that Goetz or Constantino were bad guys.

Having Beck and the military Deus Ex Machina resolving the fight with New Bern and running the town was an awful choice. We had hints of this internal shadow organization detonating the bombs to take over the country and government from Hawkins last season. This season we find that while they are ruthless enough to destroy 20 something cities, they are benevolent enough to park a military company in between two towns to keep the "peace".

Sorry for the rant. I guess I can just put my Jericho season 1 dvd set on the shelf next to my Firefly set and pretend it ended the same way.

I'm going to go ahead and assume that whatever marketing budget was available for Tom Tooman got yanked a couple of weeks ago when they saw it wasn't bringing any buzz and eyeballs to the new season.

If anyone working on the game reads this, I hope they'll give fill us in on how it was supposed to end.

Yeah. And I bet you didn't watch this latest ep. It wasn't Jennings and Rall who dropped the bomb, but that Smith character. He did it to separate JandR from the American Government and plans on detonating the last bomb in Cheyenne to destroy JandR.

Personally I prefer the JandR dropped the bomb plot more, makes it more realistic.

From the looks of the previews for the finale, kinda looks like we might be looking at the end of the US altogether. We'll get closure, but it looks like it might not be the happy fuzzy kind. What do you guys think the odds are of Tooman showing up in the finale? At this point, that's really all I can hope for.

The last episode featured a scene that had the JandR website. The colors seemed different but otherwise it was the same site.
