 		Welcome to unfiction mtspace and thanks so much. I'm still trying to find the disk and wondering why Dell would install Windows XP without including those characters.

First off, let me apologize to those who don't have the Japanese character sets installed. ^.^;;;

Well, to be precise, it does mean something; just not when written in Hiragana. The problem with Hiragana is that they don't carry any meaning, they're just phonetic symbols. You need to know how she writes her name in Kanji (which do carry meaning) in order to know what her name means.

The kanji you used, 凝 (kori), actually means stiffness (in shoulders)/swelling/hardening. So, the way you wrote it, "kori no dashi yo" would actually translate to: "Stiffness'/Swelling's/Hardening's broth!" I did some searching, but was unable to find one for "bad taste".

It's one of those optional installs that probably depends on the whims of whoever installed your PC. I know my work laptop from HP came with a bunch of character sets installed, but my home laptop (also from HP) did not (I had to install them when I started taking Japanese classes in college; and left them in because I still frequent some Japanese sites and I don't like to see the ugly jumble of stuff you get if you don't have them installed).

I'd like to offer another (possible) translation of kori-no-dashiyo - sorry, no japanese characters and I'm too lazy to download. I might be butchering this, so native speaker's help would be much appreciated, but I did take a few years of Japanese in school.

Kori = ice
No = in this case, might be used interchangably with the particle "ga", not as a possessor particle
Dasu = to remove or take out (dashiyo is this verb modified to make it an exclamatory expression).

It's like this: Noun (kori) - particle (no) - verb! (dashiyo)

Could translate to: "[she] removes the ice!" or some variant thereof. I'm not sure of the actual way it goes together, but I'm 100% certain that the noun "ice" and the verb "remove/take out" are in this sentence.

Interesting, no?

 		For all of you wondering why you are seeing boxes instead of the proper font characters, it's because of a lack of a full Unicode font. In the case of Windows even XP doesn't have the full character set natively. If you have Office installed you usually get the font you need with it, installed by default. The font to search for (Google it and it's out there) is Arial Unicode MS. It was apparently offered as an update at some point, and methinks people found out it was out there and was just an executable installer. The font file itself is HUGE for a font, but then it's got something like 35+ languages in it. Once that font is on your system there's hardly a language out there you won't be able to display a font for.

As it is, it doesn't mean anything. Now, Yoshida is the SURNAME, right? (Her father is Ryouta Yoshida) And this is the American way of writing names. In Japan, and other asian countries, the surname always comes first. Therefore, her name would be Yoshida Noriko, or:

よしだ・のりこ

Now, when you reverse this...

こりのだしよ

Which is read 'korinodashiyo'

What's INTERESTING about this is that it CAN also be read:

kori no dashi yo:
凝の出しよ！

Which means, "That Seaweed Soup leaves a bad taste in your mouth!"

凝(kori) means a bad aftertaste (Also can mean a shoulder cramp)
の(no) is a subject modifier, it just acts like an "'s". It means whatever behind it refers to whatever's after, as a property thereof.
出し(dashi) is a kind of broth, made out of boiling fish or kelp. It's a staple in Japanese cuisine.
よ(yo) is a particle modifier which just makes the whole sentence mean "That is ____ !" roughly.

With the whole thing about the magical ingredient found underwater and supposed to be tasty, this sounds quite ominous.

Personally, I also think it's a coincidence, myself, albeit a rather entertaining one. Although I wouldn't rule out it being done on purpose.


I'm really sorry to squash this but it really makes absolutely no sense. Mainly because Japanese last names are always spelled using Kanji.


My japanese is pretty good and well...my wife is japanese and we both had a good laugh. Not to fault you.. the translaters available on the net are soo wrong most times its no wonder people get confused. And unless you learn the language sturcture and culture, your bound to get it wrong too. Just looking through a dictionary doesn't help.

I will say this though. Your theory does sounds ignorant enough that it could have been thought up by some idiot hollywood writer who also has no clue of the language.

Please don't misunderstand here. I'm not flaming anyone, atleast not trying to. What I mean here is that this wouldn't be the first time that hollywood has totaly screwed up when trying to use Japanese or Chinese, culture, language and writing in american movies.

I'm glad you found it fun to laugh at me. Before you judge, You do understand that I myself am Chinese, and I do study Japanese, I HAVE the basics, and I've been to Japan plenty of times, and I have Japanese friend of my own whom I talked to with about this. I definitely don't know as much as your wife, but hey, here's the rub, there's nothing wrong whatsoever with this at all.

Unfortuantely they didn't really give us the Kanji, did they? And even if they didn't, you could still use the phonetic sounds and reverse them. There is nothing at all about the language which makes what I did wrong in ANY way. It's the same as reversing English words. You CAN spell words backward and sometimes they come up with interesting patterns, but are you SUPPOSED to do that? No. It's just a curious reversal of the letters, which is exactly what I'm doing here.

OBVIOUSLY if you saw the kanji and reversed them, it would mostly come up gibberish unless each character specifically contains its own meaning. And no, I didn't run it through some online translation device thank you very much. I actually bothered to do research, and ask my Japanese friends.

Outside of my ignorance, I'm sorry that you and your wife are too closed-minded to accept alternate approaches to a single straightforward path.

By the way, this exact same principle works for English too.

This is a demonstration, although not exactly the SAME, but;

"A man, A plan, A canal, Panama."
Spell that backwards letter by letter, and you get the exact same thing.
However, if you take them only in WORDS, as you said can ONLY be done, You get gibberish.

I rest my case.
