[Meta] Poll: MySpace or the highway?
Am I the only one who would sooner stop following than start MySpacing?

Just curious, but how many of you would continue to follow this movie online if JJ Abrams came out and said that the only atypical online marketing from this point forward will be on the MySpace pages of the cast, and that the sole purpose of those MySpace pages is character development?

Edit: Sorry, but this is my first poll and I messed it up. Help fixing it least I screw it up more?

The truth is I would be disappointed but I would still check in once in a while to the Myspace pages.

MySpace is still popular and free, so why not use it? The only problem I have with MySpace is it's blocked at my work, which makes it harder for me to follow.

As to your other question, of course I would love for there to be an ARG, a weekly podcast, contests, etc... but I am more interested in what the movie is about, not how the movie is marketed. So anything they give us beyond the actual movie is just a bonus.

In fact, the only thing JJ Abrams "promised" us was:
  • You're going to get the real trailer
  • You're going to get the real poster
  • You're going to get to see the footage from the movie
  • And you'll get the real title

A similar and more cynical question to what you are asking is "If you don't get an ARG, etc..., will you still see the movie?"

ARG or no, I think it's a safe bet that anyone intrigued at this point will see the movie. But I think "ARG" confuses the issue. 1-18-08 is a monster movie. The monster is the star, just like Godzilla, Kong, Aliens, etc. That's what people following it are interested in. Now I've seen plenty of Godzilla over the years, but I'll be damned if I remember the names of the human characters in those movies. So, for me, it's really all about the monster.

Is the monster going to remain a complete mystery until the movie premiers? Maybe that's the better question. But if that's the case, I think it's a miscalculation. While I don't expect every aspect of the monster to become known before the movie is release, I do think bits and pieces of the monster's identity will serve to sustain the interest of the people who will ultimately become fans of the known monster (see above).

I really couldn't care less about the people. If the monster is to remain a total mystery, I'd like to know, as that will significantly impact my interim level of interest.

Yes, when did JJ promise an ARG? Can't quite recall that particular instance.

Anyway, MySpace is blocked at work for me too and only seems to work about half the time so I'll probably just stick to CloverfieldClues and other related websites to keep track of the MySpace updates.

I have a myspace I hardly use, I tried to add these charctors to it like others did. But, not 1 of them accepted my invite. So, I dont really care to check it out again.

I created my MySpace for the Lost ARG, and haven't used it since until the Slusho 7 were found. I didn't have time to look at their pages when they first came out, so I only have two of them as my friends. It looks like they stopped adding new people at some point, but I'm not sure why...?

This is all Ethan Haas' fault! Wink

The problem with an ARG at this point is, what CAN be revealed? If JJ doesn't want to reveal what the monster is, the ARG could only reveal back story of the characters.

One of the rumors is that the movie will begin with the monster attack, and there will be no back story of the monster's origin. The monster's origin would be a great ARG, but could only happen after the monster is revealed, which I don't think is likely until we're much closer to 1-18-08. (111 days!)

This is just a guess, but I would think that the next trailer will at least reveal the title of the movie, which may give some insight as to what the monster actually is. Especially it the movie is title TURTLEOID or JELLYFISHIUOS, and not something lame like "Overnight".

Maybe they'll set the monster up with a MySpace.
