[IMPLOSION] The Ballad of Michael Adams

(Moved from "Is this a trailhead or spam?" thread)

So I put this in the trash assuming it was spam:

Then dug it back out to decode the Morse at the bottom (TECHNOLOGY IS THE KEY).

Then, I got this text message through the LiveJournal txt app:

Quote:
From: 6028948826SPLATlivejournal.com
(LJ) Requesting verification of received transmission at g3kSPLATlivejournal.com

Sooo... yeah. (602) 894-8826, by the way, is not an in-service phone number, although if it were, it would indeed be in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. I emailed back with "Gotcha." and didn't get a bounce-back, so the address seems to be legit.

Anyone got a clue as to what the heck the code means? It's not base64 - decoding that way results in an even more unintelligble mush. Am I missing something crucial here? Or is it really just spam, albeit spam that the sender is so concerned about he goes to my LiveJournal and uses the text web app to send me a message on my phone?

edit: broke up scrolling line - rowan
edit: added the SPLAT's in the email addresses - varin

Seems more than just spam, but until someone deciphers the code, can't be sure. Why both morse code and another code?

Morse to easily provide the "key" for whatever decoding scheme is to be used, and the other code to frustrate the hell out of me Smile

I got one of these too! Solved:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
So running the string through a Vignere thingie with "technology" as the key gives you this:

SGVsbG8uDQoNCk15IG5hbWUgaXMgTWljaGFlbCBBZGFtcy4NCg0KDQpJIGFt
IHJlcXVlc3RpbmcgeW91ciBhc3Npc3RhbmNlIG9uIGEgbWF0dGVyIG1vc3QgdXJn
ZW50Lg0KDQpQbGVhc2UgcmVwbHku

(breaks inserted by me)

and then...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
that is base64, and it reads:

"Hello.

My name is Michael Adams.

I am requesting your assistance on a matter most urgent.

Please reply."

So I replied, but haven't heard back yet.

Incidentally, the e-mail address, expedite at mail.com...well, expedite.com has sort of a suspicious broken gif there, doesn't it? It may be totally unrelated, though. Dunno. But, "acronym29.gif"?

And just like that, a reply to my original "Gotcha." email:

Quote:
Appreciate it.

More info later.

Take care,

Michael A.

Just got a reply, too, but mine had a thing at the bottom:

Quote:
Appreciate it.

More info later.

Take care,

Michael A.

New ARG? G3K, don't you feel good that someone needs your help most urgently?

Hopefully this most urgent help doesn't involve transmitting large sums of cash across international borders, as that's what most "urgent help" emails I get inevitably concern.

You can count on me, Falafel ;-P

I googled the number and got this:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Leonardo Olivera - (908) 820-0664 - 1277 Clinton Pl, Elizabeth, NJ 07208

Hmm... weird that one returned a payphone and another looks like a personal line.

Ooh, a real phone number! And just like mine, it's near where you live!

Omnie, did you get any kind of txt confirmation, or was the email all you got?

Weird, that is kinda near where I live. I didn't get any txt messages, but then I don't tend to give out my cell phone info very often. I'm not a big phone person (hehehe, as perhaps you may have discovered).

(in other words, I'm kind of totally not going to call that number)
