Since the first post body content says, "Youtube and more", I went to Youtube and searched for "theburiedfilm", which yielded this:

http://www.youtube.com/user/theburiedfilm

It's the same film, but the audio is normalized and intact. Unfortunately, I didn't catch any actual speaking in this version, but it does at least offer a larger (fullscreen) view - with audio. Checked friends, groups, playlists, comments, etc. Nothing yet.

I wonder if this person has a Myspace profile?

Anyway, daily responsibilities call me away for a bit. Was hoping someone could pick this up and run with it.

-Anna

EDIT: I was wrong. Someone does say something at the very end, right after the second pan around the area, but I can't quite make out what it says yet. Funny. I went to load the youtube clip into my other comp so I could turn the speakers all the way up, and the browser crashed. Har. *rolls eyes*

EDIT 2: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=154563011

TBF last logged into his Youtube acct 9/26. Stephen Pick last logged into his Myspace acct 9/26. One "friend" on the page. Notice the Meta4 icon. One friend listed. "HoT", a radio show.

http://www.myspace.com/havering_on_time

Search of "theburiedfilm" on Myspace yields:

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.channel&ChannelID=247959224

Submitted by "Jay". His profile: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=247959224

Same icon style, only it says "theburiedfilm".

Apparently, I have nothing better to do on my birthday than scour Youtube and Myspace. Yay. Wink

I got my reply from the website! My Gmail lists the name of the sender as "Jay Holt", matching up with the "Jay" on Myspace that Anna found, so I guess we can assume that Jay is the man behind TheBuriedFilm.

Here's the e-mail, copypasted in its entirety:
Quote:
theburiedfilm is a piece of drastic, action art. its a statement on censorship and the film industry as a whole. the actual buried film cost thousands of pounds, took countless hours and was successful at festivals. upon being removed from public view by forces against my control i chose to destroy it in a meaningful way. to sacrifice something you have created is, i hope, a powerful statement in itself. ignoring the details involved.

this is as much as i can say at this point in time.

i hope many people get to view the film in the many places i have put it.

many thanks

theburiedfilm

Hmm.

Finally, I get a chance to see the video!

I already see an issue here. That looks like a Digibeta tape (it might have been Beta SX) and probably PAL formatted. If you do have to go out and find that box and dig it up, most people here won't have the facilities to view it, much less ingest, compress, and post it for the rest of us to see. Luckily, I have access to all necessary equipment, if needed.

Anyone else notice its only a 20 minute tape (at least that's what the case said)? Wonder what could fit within the space of 20 minutes to cause such controversy?

This is also different from what I'd assumed before. I thought he'd buried the only copy to spite the people that were making him mad, and in the e-mail he says that it was "removed from public view by forces against {his} control". Jay also states that the movie was "successful at festivals" which means that it was a pretty good movie and probably made some money.

So what would make someone decide to keep it out of public eyes? Jay says it wasn't his choice-- he just decided to dispose of it by burying it. Who was behind it, and why? And most of all, what's on the bloody tape?

Jay doesn't seem to want to say, but he DOES want more people to see his videos online, so he's probably just getting started. I'd assume that we should keep watching the Myspaces and the website and see if more info is forthcoming. Other than that, should I e-mail him back? And what should I say?

Unless the person at the other end of the email on the webpage mentions something about Myspace, I'd ignore that for now since there isn't anything I can see that 100% positively links the website to any Myspace profile *and* proves the profile is IG. If it becomes important, there would be a hint on the website or an email from the website owner. For now, I'd focus only on what happens on the website.

It's probably just another place he's posted the video, though. He said he'd posted it in "many places", so I'm assuming the website, youtube, and myspace are some of those places.

Also considering the icon of the "jay" on myspace, and considering how small this game (game?) is so far, I'd tentatively say related.

I'm not saying that the profile doesn't belong to the film maker. I'm saying there's no way of asserting at this time that its IG.

I think the "many places" is just advertising for the game. Good to keep a list where you find the video popping up, but I wouldn't spend too many cycles on it yet. This is just a teaser. He's waiting for an audience to build now before he launches the game in earnest.

Hmm, are we sure this is a game? He straightout called it 'art', so it seems unlikely to me.

Interesting trailhead, considering that he kinda didn't give us anywhere to "go". We just have to sit and wait (or try to find the place where he burried the movie, which at this point is close to impossible).

I tend to agree. Writer/Director Stephen Pick's 2002 film "Going Home" (made with a budget of £2,500 approx, filmed on location at Farnham, Surrey) premiered at the Portobello Film Festival after which it apparently never received a distributor or any more publicised screenings. This may well be the buried film. It was 12 minutes in length which fits with the 20min Beta tape we see being interred.

This could just be Mr Pick's way of trying to raise the profile of his otherwise defunct product whilst simultaneously having a good old fashioned opine about the people who he felt sabotaged its success.
Regarding the question of why the film never received widespread release: there are many possible reasons, its contents being controversial being one of the less common.

[Info on "Going Home" sourced from and readily accessible at IMDB]

Been speaking to Jay via email.

TO JAY:
I recently found your site, and was wondering who you are talking to?
Who are you hiding the film from?
And why hide it, what is it about?

FROM JAY:
i cant reveal what film this was. it cost thousands, took countless hours and did very well at festivals.

its not hidden its buried for good or until someone finds it.

it was removed from public view. this is a protest against that. more to follow eventually

TO JAY:
Well, I'd be very interested as to what this film was about.
HOw long was the film?

FROM JAY:
im not allowed to tell you that

theburiedfilm

TO JAY:
Not even a hint as to what this film focuses on?
Do you plan on giving us clues as to the location of the buried film?

FROM JAY:
yes.

spread the word east and west.

theburiedfilm

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i tried to get the duration of the film, to see if your statement about the 20 minute tape was true, but he didn't say.

i bolded those two bits as it seemed a very odd statement. East and west?
usually, you'd just say spread the word.. hm.

oh, and it's odd that he refers to himself as theburiedfilm.
his name is jay, so why not type jay?

This guy is being a little too cagey. Either start looping us in or give us some idea of when you'll be ready to go.

So if it IS a game, does it stand to reason that the user theburiedfilm is the PM?
