Guess my wild theory is, the explosion was caused by a tanker, possibly one of Tagruato's being thrown into Downtown Manhattan.

That said, I have little evidence tro support my own theory but given the recent revelation with the discovery of the Tagruato Corp. site it seemed one of the reasonable ones to add.

Okay, for the life of me, I cannot remember where I saw this, but early on (back in July, even), I remember seeing an "insider report" that mentioned the movie would include a tanker explosion...

...sorry I can't help any further than that, but I think you're dead right, Kingpin: the massive explosion is from a tanker in the harbor, and the "fireballs" are barrels of (oil? Slusho? whatever flammables?) falling back to earth.
