Let me explain this, nice and slow.

You just saw that your next door neighbor left their key in their front door. No one is watching. You've been dying to see the inside of their house.
What do you do? act like nothing happened? Give them a call and tell them that they made a pretty serious mistake? Or break in, and rearrange the furniture to boot?

If you chose the last option, you are a sociopath.

...are you *seriously* comparing REAL WORLD CRIME to a low-level amateur hack of an utterly fictitious Myspace account that's part of a viral advertising campaign that's designed to promote a poorly advertised, relatively obscure motion picture? Shocked

Do we actually have to delineate the borders of reality and fantasy here? (I'm sure JJ Abrams and Crew are laughing their asses off BIG TIME at that.... Razz )

Duckie wrote:
I hope you also realize that there's no contract requiring the PMs to keep running a game. If you piss them off, there is nothing stopping them from calling it quits.

Oh yes, there IS something stopping them. It's called cash money.

While I agree with you, Duckie, that breaking thru the Fourth Wall is poor form in a *true* ARG -- where the game is everything -- the difference here is that Cloverfield is just advertising. For a movie.

If they "pack up their toys and go home" because they're miffed about a stupid stunt like this, guess what? No more viral advertising = no more hype for the movie. = NO AUDIENCE ON 1/18/08. Cappice?

Quote:
Hell, right now they'd get more national publicity for outright stopping the game than they would for continuing it.

WHAT kind of national publicity? Hell, you could take all the people who actually KNOW about the viral advertising for this UNTITLED, UNCASTED, UNPROMOTED movie and fit them in a Volkswagen Microbus.

If they tried to play "vox populi" and tell the world about this evil transgression by a bunch of renegade ARGers, the whole world would say, "WTF is an ARG? WTF is 1/18/08? WTF are you?" Shocked

Quote:
THEY DO NOT NEED YOU TO PLAY THIS GAME, and you are a player as a guest.

No, we are not guests, we are POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS. *BIG* difference. So yeah, if they want to move product, they need us to play this game.

Depends on the neighbor. I have had and have some that I could take the keys home. Others I'd just rather wait for the break-in and tell the cops about it when they got there. Depends on what sort of neighbors you have, eh?
As for me trying to do the intervention - that'd have to be a VERY good neighbor. Someone with the backhoe to help bury the body if it turned out to be the paperboy looking for a payment. Twisted Evil

Looks to me like you didn't wait for an answer either.
Just a wee bit impulsive are we?

Well, you were way over the fence at that point. Hard to pass a light to someone who's flying over the fence. And this analogy is like driving a boat over.... Shifty Eyes ah, forget it. By the time you asked if anyone else had done it you had already 'hacked' the space. And two posts and two hours later you had already shared the password. Not to mention the inmediate post after yours is ducky saying that hack is "a no-no"

*sigh*

All I'll say is that Snakes on a Plane had internet hype and terrible ratings. Hollywood is convinced that hype = squat.

This game got coverage in the Washington Post and other big name publications back at the start, but the mainstream audience-- which will ultimately represent the bulk of the movie-- hasn't heard anything sense.

The only way the mainstream media might care again is if they did something major-- like pull the plug on this little sideshow. Free publicity, yay.

If we represent anything, its 1% of the general public that they know will be buying a ticket. Start whatever protest you want, I promise you 99% of the people on this board would go see the movie, anyway.

We're guests. Even if we weren't, its no reason to act like a jerk.

Heh.

Anybody here got a marketing degree?

Yes, but "Snakes" was an animal of a different stripe than "Cloverfield." People still call "Snakes" an "internet-hype" movie, but the truth is that the only thing the Net contributed to that flick was the infamous line, "Get these m/f snakes off this m/f plane!"

Same thing happened in X-Men 3, when netnerds convinced Brett Ratner to include the megahyped "I'm the Jugganaut, bitch" quote in the flick.

But I think it's safe to say that JJ isn't pinning his hopes on a frickin' internet one-liner with this movie. He's gone farther than any other movie ever before with the extensive viral ad campaign...and I have no doubt that Hollywood will be watching closely. If JJ succeeds, we'll be witnessing the birth of a new way of advertising a flick without having to dump millions of bucks in some overblown Madison Avenue ad firm. And that will make Hollywood very happy.

Agreed, that there's no reason to act like a jerk. I was against the idea of hacking the MSPs (or any of the sites, for that matter) from the beginning. But now that the damage has been done, I think you and some others are exaggerating the negative effects just a wee bit. Wink

Yup.

By comparison, ANY movie (big or small) would already have a couple of teaser trailers by now; at least one longer theatrical trailer; the CAST of the movie would already be established; the TITLE of the movie would already be established; the Hollywood media (Entertainment Tonight, E!, Hollywood Reporter, Variety, et al) would be already conducting interviews with the director and the stars, and would already have some on-set visits and sneak previews; and so on.

THAT'S standard advertising. And that's what JJ is trying to avoid by going the viral route.

I don't much care for the "bad ass" front a few of those condoning these hacks are presenting. People broke the ARG rules, eh, not such a huge offense. People also broke the law though, furthermore broke them against a major film studio. You'd better hope for the best possible outcome because I promise you don't want to be involved in the worst. If you get charged with a felony or a lawsuit being a "bad ass" still isn't going to impress anyone. You think they care if this doesn't actually cause damage as far as promoting this film? Only time can tell us that, you don't know the answers to those questions. It seems very childish to dismiss all the action they could take by puffing out your chest with bravado and claiming they won't do anything.

Actually, I have Very Happy (outside the threads)

Very intelligent and willing to guide as opposed to judge... Cool

This whole experience (the cloverfield viral marketing campaign) is turning out to be very educational...
from an expounded understanding of extremophiles, to the proper etiquette of game play...
right down to the personalities and characteistics of the folks within the 1-18-08 forums.

As I've said before ...this is my first ARG/viral marketing interaction experience...
Learn more and more each day if you're willing, pay attention, and know whose word to trust. Wink

Isn't this the real problem here?

I don't think we need to worry that they will shut down this promotion - which has to be the cheapest possible marketing they could use- because someone figured out some passwords. Worse things have happened in the short history of ARGs and the PMs have continued.

I'm not sure where this fear that the promotion will shut down is coming from. Did the studio or Abrams make some announcement that I missed? Otherwise it --the fear, not the quoted comment--seems a bit irrational to me.

Quote:

I think this is actually their marketing plan. Hype up the movie without a title, with unknown actors, create a sense of mystery and large demand from a selected target audience that they know will go to the movie. This audience will carry their enthusiasm to others.

I'm glad that people have different opinions on how to play a game or follow a promotion, because if everyone looks at it the same way, we don't get anywhere.

Now, this I know is a joke. Wink
