 [META] PLEASE, do not hack!
Thou shalt not seek what lays behind the curtain

Hey guys,

Well, we very well may have ourselves a record here for biggest game to be hack. Our friendly neighborhood puppetmasters used some stupid passwords, and we saw a rip in the curtain.

Let me explain this, nice and slow.

You just saw that your next door neighbor left their key in their front door. No one is watching. You've been dying to see the inside of their house.
What do you do? act like nothing happened? Give them a call and tell them that they made a pretty serious mistake? Or break in, and rearrange the furniture to boot?

If you chose the last option, you are a sociopath.

I don't care how easy it is to do. It is EXTREMELY poor form to hack behind the curtain.

I hope those of you who have been having your fun logging in to sites that don't belong to you, (and by nature of their passwords are CLEARLY out of game and behind the curtain) realize that you've essentially cast everyone playing this game in a bad light. I hope you also realize that there's no contract requiring the PMs to keep running a game. If you piss them off, there is nothing stopping them from calling it quits.

Hell, right now they'd get more national publicity for outright stopping the game than they would for continuing it. THEY DO NOT NEED YOU TO PLAY THIS GAME, and you are a player as a guest.

get some manners and freaking stop messing where you shouldn't be

Evil or Very Mad

Don't make me come over there and hurt you.

Well what happened on these forums, metaphorically, is three people broke into the house together, and sealed the break so that the mob outside cannot get in. They then preceeded to leave a message for the owners not to make the same mistake, i'm not sure if they left :-p

I do however, agree with you in principle, but this case is a tad different.

Games have rules.
Sites have Terms of Service/Use.
States and countries have laws.
Anyone with a clear sense of reality sees the difference between a password given us for a few videos on jamielovesteddy.com and full account access on sites owned by 3rd parties.

No pity for transgressors.
No sympathy if such actions kill the game.

Remember, it can ruin the fun for some of us that like their product's integrity intact.

Does this mean that anyone following along here who entered the password (once it was discovered) just to see what was in "Jamie's" PB account could have exposed himself/herself to legal action? Given the ARG (or, at least, very ARG-ish) context of all this, that seems a little Kafkaesque. Should all the posters/lurkers that decided just to take a look (but didn't tamper in any way) now be looking to hire a lawyer? Shocked

I think, at this point, this still isn't a full-blown ARG, so the consequences would be minimal, if any. Or they(the PM's) might just go all out and destroy what little of a game we had for the actions of a few. Who knows? Only the next couple days will tell.

Lets not push the panic button before the monster gets here. They may be pissed as hell looking for a witch hunt, or they just may be embarassed. Tomorrow we'll see.

But legal problems aside, this is an etiquette issue. If you people are enjoyng this and plan to keep enjoying ARGs, keep in mind that you should not even try to hack. What's the point in starting to get random words in myspace accounts? Like I said on the other thread, you may as well try to hack into Slusho.jp ftp servers, or into JJ Abrahams personal mail account. You may make it, and find an autographied picture of the monster, but then the game would be over. Use your common sense. Don't ask 'Can I do it?' before 'Should I do it'?

That's up to the people at Paramount, Bad Robot, JJ Abrams, and whoever else has any legal sway over this. Those with MySpace accounts might find them gone soon. Paramount is not known for being gentle with those that it feels have stepped on it's feet.
If nothing else, the fear that you've gotten in over your head should tell you something.

Have fun.

No fear here, Euchre; I was just curious, because it seemed like something bordering on entrapment (for anything short of actual tampering, I mean), given all the circumstances surrounding how the 'curtain was ripped,' and the general ARE/ARG context of it all. Despite my avatar/icon, I don't know squat about hacking and internet stuff in general; I just liked Bioshock. I was asking b/c I thought people on these forums would know how this stuff works - and, so, you've told (but, no need to delight in other peoples' potential misery, eh?).

As to the question of etiquette, I couldn't agree more - when I show the trailer to people who haven't seen it, it's awesome b/c I feel like I know the characters; imagine how cool the movie will be, given all the stuff we'll find out between now and then! If that's been ruined b/c of this incident, and if some people actually get into real trouble, well, that would just put a stain on this whole thing that would really, really suck. But, as pointed out, that's up to the PM's - if they react harshly, it wouldn't be very good marketing; it would just compound one mistake with an even bigger one, IMO.

So, PM's, if you're reading this: We love it, whether it's marketing or a game - it rocks! Please don't abandon it/us!

Unfortunately (and in no way am I defending what happened) this is pretty much the mantra of hackers... if it can be done, someone will do it, or try to do it. The 'should' isn't an essential question to ask. After it's done is when the person decides whether to use their newfound knowledge for good or evil... abuse the hack, or help fix the hack.

Considering the sig, it's a safe assumption what happened was an honest mistake.

To go back to the breaking and entering analogy...some people attempted to rummage through some drawers and poop on the floor (you know who you are) and others attempted to clean up the mess and put things back where they belonged.(you know who you are)

Some people were getting ready to hand out keys to the whole neighborhood, and others discouraged it.

ARG seems to be a fine line in terms of establishing boundaries...but Duckie has illuminated the fence.
Now everyone knows where to go and where not to...if you see keys in your neighbors door - take them out and put them under their welcome mat.

It's also the mantra of evil monster creating schemes, but look where that gets you.

If you don't go poking holes on the sea floor, even if you can, no monster will destroy your city. If you don't go poking holes on the curtain, even if you can, no punk will start erasing photobuck pictures and putting up fake ones.

Sadly, in this case the poopers got in after you yelled "Hey look in here, keys attached to the door!". It was an honest mistake, but a mistake none the less. I know, in ARGs the fence is hard to see, but that's the beauty of places like uF, they hold lots of flashlighs. Next time ask for one before jumping.

And man, this is getting so full of analogies it's making my head spin.

If only you really knew where that sig really comes from.

Or to extend the analogy a wee bit, drop them in the mail slot or perhaps just sit on your porch and keep your eyes on the keys. If anyone notices the keys and bothers to approach, then is a good time to intervene. Just hope they'll listen. If not, you may have to call the cops, or just bear witness when they show up.

You'd hate to be my neighbor..cuz if I see my neighbors keys i'll just hold em till i see em..then give em back..no way am I sittin there watchin em like they might run off...and if someone trys to take em i'll crush there skull...with a log er somthin...yarp.
