Which would make more sense...in the English version, he says, "It was like tremors."

i think "wie n beben" does make more sense
beben also means tremor

and after the guy says
"hat jemand John gesehen?" = "Has anyone seen John?"
a girl says "er stand doch grad noch neben mir" =
"a second ago he was standing beside me"

It is normal that they translate things not very well.
I often saw translations like
"I know him since high school."
and in germany they say
"Ich kenn ihn ziemlich gut!"
which means
"I know him very well"

I think there's an important distinction to be made here that will allow us to use these non-English trailers as a guide to our understanding of what's really happening and to be seen in the movie.

The difference you notice is because that really is a translation and not purely just a transcription.

Transcriptions are starkly literal. It's just exchanging the most precisely accurate words in the given languages. This is what most websites 'translators' do, and why some seem to be doing such a crappy job.

Translations take the transcribed words and account for linguistic structures like idioms, and more importantly cultural differences, to properly convey the intended meaning of the statements.

By going from English to these foreign languages, then back again, we stand a very good chance of gaining important insights. Because the translations in the trailers are meant to keep the intent solidly intact, they may accidentally disclose more than was initially intended in the native language - English.

Take your example for instance.
What would the transcription for 'high school' be? Is there a more accurate segment of school cycle to compare and refer to? Did they choose the more circumspect translation because there's not a good comparison, or because the intended message is more critical than the specifics - is the fact that they've known them a long time more important than the fact of when they've known them?

 		Translators suck..For the most part
From my personal experience I find most translators to be very incompetent, even the proffessional ones. Of course my views are from Japanese to english as those are the only two languages I know. So it wouldn't surprise me one bit that the people who translated the movie for foriegn laguages are as adept as I have noted.

Anyone whos seen "Lost in Translation" (I laugh histarically everytime I watch the scene of him filming the add for suntory)has a pretty accurate idea of these actuall professional translators. Even if this is the case, sometimes its just not possible to make an accurate translation. In my experience anyways.

The French trailer is almost unremarkable.... the subtitles are basically a word for word translation.

I say almost, because the name is "Jensen", not "Jason", and I've not seen that anywhere else before. Smile
