Yeah, it's got to be a part of something larger. The way it's set up with the print statement makes me think it's part of a loop. Possibly it's the base case of a recursive algorithm that's being used to build up some kind of larger string. The regular expression makes no sense, tho, because it seems to be a very convoluted way of saying $a=$1 (I hate perl, it always gives you pleanty rope to hang yourself with; I can has a strong typing?). Or perhaps it's just random perl that was used because it looks like a really cool code-y piece of background imagery.

We still don't have the picture from RavenWolfs postcard.. Maybe someone should try and get a hold of him/her?

actually shaturo, in theory, it appears similar to code that would ensure that whatever the user entered, it would only be prepended and appended with one single \ rather than 2 or more (if they entered a backslash). I use similar code when asking someone for part of a url, to make sure it's still well-formed in the end. Though this code seems like pretty bad syntax and doesn't quite accomplish that goal... it would be nice if every postcard had a different code snippet like the drawing on the back, but that doesn't seem to be the case Razz

On a differenet puzzle...
We can tell with the hexes that the 3 central hexes are a code, determined by the content of the surrounding hexes...
lay out like this for the following points:
Code:
 1 4 6 7
2 X Y Z
 3 5 8 9

(note in the postcard that Y is shorter, 2 spots, though X and Z appear the same though X is 3 hexes and Z is 4)

So, X is composed of 123, Y of 45, Z of 6789

The best searching I could find so far (and based on comments previously in this thread) has led me to these guesses:
1) ? (need a higher resolution scan to make out the detailed text)
2) Exile (the words are all locations in the Exile map - shown on the wiki)
3) Michigan? (chosen over Isle Royale in that "M" fits after "E"xile more nicely; on the themes of video games, there is a (nsfw?) game called Michigan, though that might just be coincidental)
4) ? (looks like a video game, but could be a photo)
5) Electromagnet? (I googled endlessly for images connecting an electromagnet trigger or switch or circuit with a video game, couldn't find anything)
6) ? (honeycombs, but the only meaningful purpose would be if it were used in a video game somewhere; good luck finding it, unless it looks familiar)
7) Colliseum (the closest seating match I could find was the Charlotte Colliseum, though it's not a 100% match)
8 ) Hive/Registry (these are all entries in the windows registry, in the HKLM/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/hivelist key)
9) ? (looks like a video game; same situation as #6)

Going by the pattern laid out with other puzzles so far, I'd assume we're looking for the first letters. So the answer could be a phrase of 3 words: 123 45 6789
and with the words I guessed so far (which could easily be wrong)
?EM ?E ?CH?

What seriously boggles me is the seemingly endless appearance of the number 9 (or multiples of 3) - all over the place.

Ahh... I see. The escaping confused me. I thought the \ in "\$1" was being used to escape the variable name so that it would be interpreted as a variable instead of the string '$1'. ^.^;;;

Ok, I am playing catch up right now so not to sure what is going on. Will have to read a lot more tonight when I get home from work. Anyways here is what I do know. I received a post card yesterday, same as the one shown on page 7. Only difference is the picture on the back from what I can tell right now. Post card is at home, so will have to post it later. On the back is a picture of a book from what I can tell. It looks like it has a clasp on it.

Behind on everything since I moved last may and where ever they got my information I forgot to update it. So my post card was forwarded to my new address. Have not received any emails, but this is likely since I had to switch from cox to time warner for my internet/email service. Post card was post dated Oct 9th I believe. Again I will post it later with a picture.

thanks talusren... if you could also post a fairly high resolution scan of the front of the postcard, that would be very very helpful... ie, larger than 1500x1000 - just to get a better image of the small text appearing in the hexes.

I'm afraid I can't be much help on the postcards, but AWESOME JOB on that solve with the R-Type stuff, thebruce!

Okay, speculation time:

I think that the [system] being referred to in the chat conversation is the thing sending us these postcards and emails; in other words, I think that [system]=jumpingspider. After all, I think we can safely assume that both the emails and the postcards are coming from jumpingspider: look at the little spider icon on the postcards.

This is a little farther of a stretch, but maybe the [system] is the thing replacing words with the bracketed materials. Something about the way it's been said to be an expert on [pop culture] just gives me that impression. I dunno.

Which leads me to my next bit of speculation...

The cyan spider in Email 7 (the first 'journal' email) and its way of 'watching' or 'observing' humans seems to be behavior similar to that of jumpingspider. JumpingSpider has (I think) sent us all these things, yet he himself has yet to appear in the story. He is simply watching and observing with curiosity. Could the cyan spider be symbolic of jumpingspider?

Further evidence of the 'jumpingspider' being related to the cyan spiders can be found in Email 8:

Email 8 wrote:
I know why the spiders jump.

Interestingly, Email 8 is the first email to make reference to the other two stories, and as such it appears to be tying the seemingly unrelated Chapters of the Book of Minimer Randibone together.

Email 8 wrote:
Day 19: Davadron is trying to negotiate with the two factions. The hunters are better at tracking and fighting in this forest than anyone else, with Zetria's [tricks] helping.

I guess that the hunters are being aided by Zetria Atrian from Chapter 1. Remember how Zetria Atrian became the king's assistant--could the hunters have been sent by the king? Also, Zetria Atrian's "tricks" probably refer to her ability to speak to animals, rocks, etc.

Email 8 wrote:
Day 20: I dreamed that all the old teachers and heroes were yelling at me for not knowing what to do. It ended with Kallomar Ridditum himself berating me. He told me that *he* had no idea what to do, because he was in the past, and I needed to look to the future. He told me I had everything I needed.

So I guess that Kallomar Ridditum (Chapter 2) lived long before Chapter 3; it sounds almost like Kallomar's a legend or important historical figure to Keriden Oculet.

---

I'm really liking the story in Chapter 3. Chapter 1 was a little random, and Chapter 2 was really philosophical, but Chapter 3 blends story with meaning in a really cool way. Also, I'm liking that there are some connections between the Chapters.

I'm certain there is just one more email. The core dump conversation is left with one more 'column' to complete the text, and there's one more part to make 3 portions of the 3rd book (again - 3 books in Randibone, each broken into 3 segments/emails).

Based on the fact that it's the last column we're waiting for, we can assume that the words won't use up perfectly the 9 character length, given word wrapping... so, my spec on the final conversation is as follows (the remaining blocks in ( ) ):

Quote:
Alvyurin: wait, what are you doing?
Jedditor: you wanted help so im gett(ing help.)
Alvyurin: But from where?
Jedditor: dunno.
Alvyurin: Excuse me? Who are (you______)contacting?
Jedditor: dunno.
Alvyurin: are you trying to upset me? I wou(ld've____)thought you'd had realized how bad an idea that is by now.
Jedditor: heh(Well_____)im asking the [system] to find suitable candidates.
Alvyurin: Suitable h(ow?______)how does the [System] know?
Jedditor: dunno.
Alvyurin: All right, I'm go(ing to___)curtail your [System] privileges.
Jedditor: hey cmon! look the [system] (is really) intelligent. within its areas of expertise. like the [popular culture] o(f this___)world. it can find [people] and bring them to us. [people] who are willi(ng to____)help. and you would never get anything like this done without me.
Jeddit(tor: umm )hello?
Alvyurin: Well at least you're finally being communicative.
Jeddi(ttor: it )aint no disease
Alvyurin: I think the [jury] is still out on that one. B(ut now___)that you've explained it to me it does sound like a good idea.
Jedditor:( You're__)welcome.
Alvyurin: Yes. If you just explained more willingly we would ge(t along__)perfectly.
Jedditor: oh im always up for getting along with you.
Alvyuri(n: Or as )well as I get along with any [male] anyway. Inform me as soon as there a(re final )results.

given that, I'd assume that the postcards and emails, from "jumping spider", are the communications sent by Alvyurin, from wherever they are... and I think Alvy is female, and Jedd is male Wink

A couple of words may be different, offering a slightly different picture, like "this world" or "the world", or the last line possibly being just Jedd talking (reversing the genders) "...along with you, Alvyurin. Or as well as..."

Hey all... Got a package of postcards today, postmarked October 9. There are 30 cards in all, with 12 having hand-drawn markings. Scans to come later tonight.

Oddly, the return address was for Unfiction, which had me ondering why Spacely was sending me a fat pack of postcards. Smile

jamesi, nice! I think this may end up being bigger than it seems right now...

looking forward to the scans.
(as long as we get at least one super-high-res scan of the card's front from someone Wink)

Oh good. I was wondering what would happen if people threw away postcards without posting them here. Looks like we got a full set now Smile

And I've been around here reading along. Everyone just seems to be posting things faster than I could, so I've been quiet. Looks like the rabbit hole's about to actually open up, soon as we get this last email. And solve the postcard mystery.

All the scans (excuse my crappy scanner), in no particular order or orientation.

yeah, 9 unique depictions, likely each connected to a book fragment / email.

wikifying now...

These drawings are very much like someone I know very well and have just been lurking this game since I got the trailhead. I just want to say, if my suspicions are correct, you all are in for a hell of a game. This PM usually runs a pregame with a lot of buzz and media forms while he/she is putting on the final touches! I will watch from a distance just to see if my feelings are right.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Not any of the names I mentioned in a prior post

Actually, I'd say word Z is Hive, based on three clues converging (beehive, Charlotte Hornets, hive/registry).

I can try and get a higher resolution scan of 1, but I doubt it'll be of much use. I don't think the postcard itself goes much above 300 dpi.
