I bet that if you emailed the Jumping Spider Gmail account, they'd start sending you the emails.

BTW, I really, really like the piecing-together stuff. Nifty, neato. Smile

Edit: Here are all the words that have been 'replaced' (the words in brackets) in the text.

[person]
[people]
[expletive]
[man]
[King]
[Dozen]
[system]
[System]

Half of them are references to being alive or being a human (person, people, man, King); the other half may have been for censorship (expetive) or for other unknown reasons (Dozen, system, System).

So, what significance do this 'replacements' have?

Kallomar Ridditum's Instruction

In the days of the Ninth [Empire], Kallomar Ridditum was one of the best-known
teachers of the [Lyceum]. One day his former student, Melenon Agribar,
presented himself before the great master.

"Greetings and well-wishes to the great Kallomar Ridditum. Long have been the
years since I last stood in this sacred grove of [???] trees, speaking to
those ringed around me on the stone benches. Heavy has been my heart as I
reflected upon the gentle, sun-shrouded days spent learning at your feet. And
once again gladness arises in me like a summer zephyr to stand before you once
again."

"Hail and ill met, Melenon Agribar. I greet you as a teacher greets a former
student, with expectation of infirmity and uselessness. For I am merely old,
and even in my prime I had little wisdom. For years, too, I have thought of
your delicate face upturned in the sunbeams of our sacred grove. For years I
have reflected on the beginning of your life and speculated as to what vistas
of adventure and knowledge you were now exploring. And now you come before me
without news of valiant battles or lofty philosophies. You come before me
offering merely the off-key reprises of days gone past, slathered with [honey]
to slip into my gullet. How quaintly charming. How utterly disappointing."

"Old teacher, you are even sharper than I do recall. I would be most surprised
if you truly were afflicted with infirmity and uselessness. Allow me to
explain that I came with deepest joy and reverence with an offering of sweet
memories to cultivate a field of love in which we can meet once again as
friends. There is no need for the bitter struggle of philosophical inquiry
among two deep friends such as we."

"Dear ill-equipped student, there is nothing else that matters to me in this
life, nothing that I truly can offer except the struggle of inquiry. Why
should my life and soul be bitter to me? Why should I shun them when my life
already features doubts and distractions enough? What I most hoped to hear
from you were new plots and ponderings after your years away from my
tutelage."

"Very well, out of great respect for your great wisdom, old teacher, I shall
illuminate the vistas of inquiry that I have explored in my time since the
grove. I shall reveal the advances in the most sacred arts of prophecy that
have occupied my life."

"How exhilirated I am to hear such noble words from your sweet lips. How rapt
I am with anticipation of the wonders to which you will now expose me. How
joyous an occasion to hear about the interesting arts of prophecy, of minimal
utility though they be."

"Dear old teacher, I see your trap immediately. You wish me to expound on the
sacred role the arts of prophecy fulfill in our society and the importance
with which they are endowed."

"Dear old student, I expect nothing of the sort. It is obvious that little
needs to be said of the minor importance held by these arts."

"And yet they are used in all walks of life, from the humblest of fortune
tellers to the highest of advisors to [kings] and [princes]. Many are the
legends of divination woven into our [culture]."

Spacing wasn't preserved in this post for the bottom part, but rest assured it fits at the end of the conversation we already have.

My analysis: After seeing the [???] in this post, it leads me to believe that these stories are a "translation" of something. The brackets are words that the translator doesn't quite understand (or they're using the closest thing to the word they can find in our language). Thoughts?

dammit.. i was workin as fast as I could.. Im gonna post my spec'd convo anyways in case theres any differences.. anything in Bold is what I speculated..

Quote:

Alvyuri(n?): thought you'd had realized how bad a(t?)...(Missing)... im asking the [system] to find suita(ble?) ...(Missing)... how does the [System] know? Jedditor curtail your [System] privileges.

There is most likely a 5th piece of the convo coming soon.. still some missing pieces..

I'll prolly have to edit this in a sec.. here goes.

EDIT: What Im thinking is it is out of order a bit.. it would sound more fluid if it went like this... (Remember this is just a spec)

and so on...

EDIT2: Fixed, thanks wargasm! lol

smooth i think maybe "within its are as of exp" might acctually be "within its area of exp" as in expertise possibly. the leading and trailing spaces get dropped when we get new pieces.

edit: yea that first part reminds of an IM convo where the first person asked a question, and then asked another before the other person got finished typing. so you get 2 questions from one person followed by 2 answers by the other. after that they seem to have gotten their timing down. pretty good detail from the PMs it seems

"within its areas of expertise" I'm sure...

This is very good... I was wondering when the next email would come in Smile
wiki's updated...
* The Book (4 parts so far)
* Core dump

Also more on the codes... I see a pattern emerging...

(left side original = right side ROT-17'd in case it needs to be rot'd as its context is)
0EAV1XRE3LHO = 0VRM1OIV3CYF
1XRE2ICC3LHO = 1OIV2ZTT3CYF
1XRE2ICC3LHO = 1OIV2ZTT3CYF
0EAV1XRE2ICC = 0VRM1OIV2ZTT

First, can someone verify that the 2nd and 3rd email codes are exactly the same?

Second, the codes are 12 characters long, looking to be in 3 sets of 4.
0EAV / 1XRE / 3LHO = 0VRM / 1OIV / 3CYF
1XRE / 2ICC / 3LHO = 1OIV / 2ZTT / 3CYF
1XRE / 2ICC / 3LHO = 1OIV / 2ZTT / 3CYF
0EAV / 1XRE / 2ICC = 0VRM / 1OIV / 2ZTT

note the # (0-3) and 3 letters. We really need to verify that email 2 and 3 have the same 12 characters, it could be important.

Actually, for the third email I see 0EAV1XRE3LHO. Can someone confirm this?

EDIT: Wait, never mind. It's the first and second emails which have the same code you posted. The third has what I wrote above, which you wrote as the first. The fourth is correct.

Actually, using what's quoted in this thread, the codes are right (email 1 and 2 are on page 1, email 3's on page 2, email 4's on this page) ... I'd just like a re-verification on the 2nd and 3rd emails that what's posted is exactly what's in the originals (I received email 1, so I know that one's right).

These are the original, copied, un-ROT-ed codes from the emails. (I got them all and am copying them straight from my inbox.)

Sparrow-Clam (1st email) wrote:

Dragon's Shell (2nd email) wrote:

Shell Game (3rd email) wrote:

Which, when split into sets of four like thebruce suggested, is:
1: 0EAV-1XRE-2ICC
2: 0EAV-1XRE-3LHO
3: 0EAV-1XRE-3LHO
4: 0EAV-1XRE-2ICC

As you can see, the first eight characters in each code are identical; also, the last four characters of the second and third codes match, and the last four characters of the first and fourth characters match.

I triple-checked these to make sure they were right, and I'll do screencaps if you guys want. Is it possible that we are getting different codes?

Updated list of bracketed words:

[person]
[people]
[expletive]
[man]
[King]
[Dozen]
[system]
[System]
[Empire]
[Lyceum]
[???]
[honey]
[kings]
[princes]
[culture]
[male]

I think that Daveman424's idea about these bracketed words being loose or un-translatable words makes a lot of sense. After all, there are certain words that don't have translatable meanings in some languages. Also, this story has an 'ancient Chinese proverb' feel to it... Don't ya think? Smile

shees, if not everyone gets the same codes for the email, then that throws a wrench in all this... what then would the codes be based on? If nothing, then do we collect all the different variants? Right now we know each 3 letter code for 0 through 3, and we've seen 012, 013 and 123... if that's wrong, then it seems like the only other choice is the code is random and made to throw us off, which I don't like too much Razz

And I'm thinking daveman's rtf upload is a direct copy of his email, which is a different code than yours rekidk. I only got the first email, so I'm no help. =/

And the bracketed words I see as a lot like the bracketed words in the Terminals in Halo 3 - as you say, no direct translation could be made, so it used the closest word that may describe it. Things like cliches or cultural terms and phrases would become 'closest matches'

Also, I'm sensing a recurring theme of 3's and multiples... ever since the shell, and the dozen game. 12? 0-8 (9 numbers)? the shell with a 3x3 grid? 3 x 4 length codes? or, 3 sets of a number and 3 letters? 3 chapters to book 1?

Ah, you're right! His second email and mine are different.

Here are the HTML versions of the emails I got.

nope, looks entirely safe. they don't even have your email address on them...

that helps in showing that the coredump segments are actually shifting, showing their actual positions in the conversation block... and that you're telling the truth Wink so, anyone else who got those emails - can you confirm the code(s) you got are different from rekidk's in the corresponding emails?

I just got a new email. I got one this morning too, but this I can't seem to find on the wiki or here. (I might have missed it, I'm tired and heading for bed right now, so if that's the case, I welcome you to trout me.)

"Dear student, you need hardly remind me of the musty old tales that serve as
the foundation of our [culture]."

"Then, my former teacher, you must admit that a study of divination is a
worthwhile pursuit."

"This trap you missed, my unclever student; One does not obsess over a
foundation for the lifetime of a house. One builds upon it and fulfills its
potential."

"A foundation could be said to be the part of a house used most often. Every
moment of every day it works to hold up the structure above. Such is the role
of divination in our [society]."

"Since you appear to be hung up on this subject, my student, let us address
it. How is divination used to guide one's life?"

"When one has a difficult decision, divination can provide a course of
action."

"If one takes a divined course of action, who is to be commended if it turns
out an ethical course, and who is to be vilified if it is not?"

"There are theories about the source of information, but none have yet been
proven."

"What reasons does an individual have to undertake a divined course of
action?"

"The fact that divination has revealed it to be a favorable course of action."

"My student, if there is no reason, no reward and no risk, why should anyone
choose to allow divination to guide their life?"

"Divination is not consulted for simple decisions. Truly, my teacher, the
strength of divination is that it may illuminate a path that was dark and
previously unregarded."

"Truly, my student, one cannot simply Tank Cat into Mordor."

"Contrarily, my former teacher, the process of divination requires thought.
A [person] cannot be kept from thinking except through the vilest excesses of
tyranny. When presented with a divined course of action, the divinee cannot
help but to consider it. They must think about what it may mean and why it was
offered. Their minds are activated and shown connections they had heretofore
missed."

"And here we come to a contradiction, my student. A foundation, while
admittedly used every day, is not thought of or considered with any great
frequency. You had begun your speech by praising the virtues of divination and
its ability to replace thought, but now you say that it in fact encourages and
even requires thought."
