My upload was the actual email, copied into Textedit. So apparently we're getting different codes. Strange. I just got that new email as well, with the same code in it. Did everyone who is receiving multiple emails reply to the messages? Did thebruce not reply? I'm just wondering if a reply signified "send me more", and that's why some people aren't receiving the rest.

And yes, I was definitely thinking "Chinese proverb". Except for the bottom stuff, obviously. Guess it's just "hurry up and wait" until we complete the bottom part of the email. Unless anyone has better ideas about the "codes" we're receiving.

I havent replied to them, and I have recieved two (Both "Instruction" emails).. I dont think a reply is necessary yet, the PM is obviously monitoring these boards.. (How else would they know I was involved in trying to piece together the convo?).. they emailed me first, also (which means they definitely are monitoring these boards).

Now we just wait for maybe 1-2 new clues. I think that they are AIM SN's perhaps? I added both just in case.

Good idea with adding them as AIM names.

For completeness, I've attached my HTML version of the 5th email.

Have we tried ROT-ing the new codes in this one? I would, but I've got to run and do homework. Sad (Hence, updated list of bracketed words will come tomorrow.)

Just for comparison purposes, I'll post the two mails I recieved also.

Kallomar Ridditum's Instruction

In the days of the Ninth [Empire], Kallomar Ridditum was one of the
best-known
teachers of the [Lyceum]. One day his former student, Melenon Agribar,
presented himself before the great master.

"Greetings and well-wishes to the great Kallomar Ridditum. Long have
been the
years since I last stood in this sacred grove of [???] trees, speaking
to
those ringed around me on the stone benches. Heavy has been my heart as
I
reflected upon the gentle, sun-shrouded days spent learning at your
feet. And
once again gladness arises in me like a summer zephyr to stand before
you once
again."

"Hail and ill met, Melenon Agribar. I greet you as a teacher greets a
former
student, with expectation of infirmity and uselessness. For I am merely
old,
and even in my prime I had little wisdom. For years, too, I have
thought of
your delicate face upturned in the sunbeams of our sacred grove. For
years I
have reflected on the beginning of your life and speculated as to what
vistas
of adventure and knowledge you were now exploring. And now you come
before me
without news of valiant battles or lofty philosophies. You come before
me
offering merely the off-key reprises of days gone past, slathered with
[honey]
to slip into my gullet. How quaintly charming. How utterly
disappointing."

"Old teacher, you are even sharper than I do recall. I would be most
surprised
if you truly were afflicted with infirmity and uselessness. Allow me to
explain that I came with deepest joy and reverence with an offering of
sweet
memories to cultivate a field of love in which we can meet once again
as
friends. There is no need for the bitter struggle of philosophical
inquiry
among two deep friends such as we."

"Dear ill-equipped student, there is nothing else that matters to me in
this
life, nothing that I truly can offer except the struggle of inquiry.
Why
should my life and soul be bitter to me? Why should I shun them when my
life
already features doubts and distractions enough? What I most hoped to
hear
from you were new plots and ponderings after your years away from my
tutelage."

"Very well, out of great respect for your great wisdom, old teacher, I
shall
illuminate the vistas of inquiry that I have explored in my time since
the
grove. I shall reveal the advances in the most sacred arts of prophecy
that
have occupied my life."

"How exhilirated I am to hear such noble words from your sweet lips.
How rapt
I am with anticipation of the wonders to which you will now expose me.
How
joyous an occasion to hear about the interesting arts of prophecy, of
minimal
utility though they be."

"Dear old teacher, I see your trap immediately. You wish me to expound
on the
sacred role the arts of prophecy fulfill in our society and the
importance
with which they are endowed."

"Dear old student, I expect nothing of the sort. It is obvious that
little
needs to be said of the minor importance held by these arts."

"And yet they are used in all walks of life, from the humblest of
fortune
tellers to the highest of advisors to [kings] and [princes]. Many are
the
legends of divination woven into our [culture]."

a
worthwhile pursuit."

"This trap you missed, my unclever student; One does not obsess over a
foundation for the lifetime of a house. One builds upon it and fulfills
its
potential."

"A foundation could be said to be the part of a house used most often.
Every
moment of every day it works to hold up the structure above. Such is
the role
of divination in our [society]."

"Since you appear to be hung up on this subject, my student, let us
address
it. How is divination used to guide one's life?"

"When one has a difficult decision, divination can provide a course of
action."

"If one takes a divined course of action, who is to be commended if it
turns
out an ethical course, and who is to be vilified if it is not?"

"There are theories about the source of information, but none have yet
been
proven."

"What reasons does an individual have to undertake a divined course of
action?"

"The fact that divination has revealed it to be a favorable course of
action."

"My student, if there is no reason, no reward and no risk, why should
anyone
choose to allow divination to guide their life?"

"Divination is not consulted for simple decisions. Truly, my teacher,
the
strength of divination is that it may illuminate a path that was dark
and
previously unregarded."

thought.
A [person] cannot be kept from thinking except through the vilest
excesses of
tyranny. When presented with a divined course of action, the divinee
cannot
help but to consider it. They must think about what it may mean and why
it was
offered. Their minds are activated and shown connections they had
heretofore
missed."

"And here we come to a contradiction, my student. A foundation, while
admittedly used every day, is not thought of or considered with any
great
frequency. You had begun your speech by praising the virtues of
divination and
its ability to replace thought, but now you say that it in fact
encourages and
even requires thought."

Sorry for the dbl post, I couldnt keep that post going it was getting way too long.

Regarding the "Sacred grove of [???] trees.."..

Due to the constant referencing of Greek Mythology, I searched Wikipedia for sacred groves in Greek Myths and came up with a possible answer for the "???":

Quote:
"The most famous sacred grove in mainland Greece was the oak grove at Dodona. Outside the walls of Athens, the site of the Academy was a sacred grove of olive trees, still recalled in the phrase "the groves of Academe."" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred_grove

"Sacred Grove of [???] Trees" = Sacred Grove of Olive Trees.

Also, the reference to the Academy outside of Athens could be referring to the "Lyceum".

EDIT: I realize it is referred to as a phrase in wikipedia, but "the groves of Acadame" was also a novel written in 1952 by Mary McCarthy .. if that even helps anyone at all.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninety-nine_Novels

EDIT2: I just noticed something that could possibly debunk my olive theory.. Aristotle's Lyceum is different from the "Akademia" founded by Plato, where the Sacred Grove of Olive Trees resided.. then again, it may have been a mix up on the part of the PM? who knows.. right now this could all be useless boring info for all I know. I just thought the fact that we had question marks could mean we were meant to find out what they meant..

I go to sleep and wake up and here is all this Spec.

Smooth- awesome awesome research. I don't know much about greek mythology, tidbits here and there but a ARG surrounding that would be awesome don't you think?

I thought we were supposed to fill in the question marks too. If so, you're on the right track, or at least I believe so.

Keep on rocking. Very Happy

the coded text that comes in at the beginning and ending of the emails, i think might not mean anything. i know that some forms of ROT are used in certain email protocols as a kind of "toy" encryption. wasnt ROT17 MIME? ill have to look it up, but the translations on page 1 of the code in the first email seem to confirm this for me. the downside is that this usually doesnt show up in the acctually emails, so it would seem that they are being re-formated along the way to us somewhere. also the fact that the convo pieces come after what is essentially the EOF on the email is odd....
anyone who knows more about this than me please add your thoughts

PS. did they really just go to tank cat? that makes me want a longcat/tacgnol ARG!!! holy shit. i just figured out what the monster is in cloverfield!

to better understand the code and brackets, think like HTML... what's within the brackets is related to the tag before them. I think the fact some of the brackets don't match up might be an oversight - would be more feasible and understandable were they this way (including the interruption from email 5)

MAILSTART ((
...FILELOAD ((
......text
...READERROR ))
...report
...CONTINUING ((
......text
...FILECLOSE ))
...CODE ((
......code text
...TRANSFERERROR ))
...COREDUMP ((
......core text
...??? ))
MAILEND ))

as it stands, they appear as this (still with similar commands grouped together):

MAILSTART ((
...FILELOAD ((
......text
...READERROR ))
...report
...CONTINUING ((
......text
...FILECLOSE ))
...CODE ))
......code text
...TRANSFERERROR ))
...COREDUMP ((
......core text
MAILEND ))

in the latter case, some of the brackets don't make much sense, even if considering 'incoming' vs 'outgoing' data or vice versa.

Regarding the Brackets and ROTs: It could be as simple as that the only reason of their existence within these emails is to make it appear like it is being fed to us by some sort of operating system.. just throwin that stuff in there to make it sound computer-official-like.. lol yeah thats right i said computerofficiallike. Maybe we're focusing too much on the ROTs when we need to keep our eyes on the convo/code/bracketed words?

Just a thought, could be wrong, its been known to happen.

Nobuo - Thanks but I owe it all to wikipedia.. its one of those times where you look for one thing, and it leads you to another, and so on..like an avalanche of information. Im glad all my info could possibly help in some way though..

too much on the rots? we've dissected pretty much everything we've got... just throwing out ideas. We've paid more attention to the coredump and code by far, than the rots... once we knew it was rot-17, well, there was nothing else to figure out Razz

So far this has all been very 'light' on puzzles... the fun of this is more piecing together the segments of story and conversation than anything else... really hoping for more to come soon. it's a little trickle every day or two, with not much to do for each.

Sorry maybe I said it wrong, what I meant was our focus should be on things that could possibly lead us somewhere, like the Convo and Bracketed words. The closest we have to a mystery so far is the "???" and maybe the codes.

Im not saying the ROTs couldnt lead anywhere, but its just not evident given the info we have to work with so far..

totally agreed. No harm is discussing them though.
Just like no harm in speculating a conversation's content when it'll be revealed precisely with each email received anyway WinkWink

While I love the LOTR reference, I think it's interesting that he repeats himself. He says that same sentance twice, but changes the example. It's like the first one is a modern reference, and the second an ancient Greek reference.

I don't exactly know where I'm going with this, I just thought it was interesting.
