Or... the poster picture is from the morning after the incident.

RIght Arkaham i thought that too but in fairness their isnt anything else damaged in the city meaning either the monster decided to go somewhere else or something happened before the trailer and maybe we're not finding out about it yet... i'd still say it's before the events in the trailer since it looks like it's early dusk so it wouldn't be long before the trailer

That or it really is after and the monster is freezing cold that he froze the water that way. He just wanted to cool down NYC since it's 63 degrees at midnight in the middle of january. The monster is just trying to help!

Further damage could be hidden by the buildings along the river. You can't see behind them.

I may be wrong here, but if you stands behind the SOL looing at the city, wouldn't you be facing east? That'd mean light on the horizon means dawn, not dusk.
And I'm sorry but I don't think I'm following you. There is destruction on the poster. A huge gap in the cityscape full of smoking buildings, as if a monster had passed the night before going uptown. Or what do you mean with 'their isnt anything else damaged in the city'?

If the monster was focused on something beyond the edge of the city, it wouldn't necessarily take the time to inflict a lot of damage there, merely 'pass through' as it were.

actually this was discussed and chalked up to artistic license, as there is still debris falling off the statue of liberty, with the wak, helicopters and such to give an overall feel of the movie and not an instant snapshot. it was discussed in an old topic which i couldn't find.
wow that came in really late sorry was answering emails.

Now that I think about it. If we assume the 'overnight' possible title means the whole movie will happen on that fatidic night, then the poster is showing us the end of the movie. Not that is spoils anything we couldn't guess from every single hollywood movie (hey look, the monster did not ate New York!) but is just a rather original teaser poster, showing way before anything else what could very well be the last scene of the movie.

Hate to bring it up but... K well i think from the type of destruction we can see, we can at least guesstimate the size of the monster... which rules out Cthulu(in one of the books Lovecraft gives a good description and the size is VERY disproportional to the damage)

I'll luv it no matter what, as long as it isn't a gay ass "AMERICA SAVES THE DAY!" movie.
