Nice cans

We should have a Topic on those bastards, maybe that is where slusho comes from? regardless they are in the apt and in the street. Has anyone typified this as a "Scream like" group of friends in a horror/suspense film. "The Couple", "the Whore", "the idiot comic Relief", "the brains", "hot chic the brain likes"? i know JJ wouldnt but maybe? considering their myspace pics

Dissecting something like this seems to me to be a bit of a loss leader. I believe the explosion is there for dramatic effect. Explosions are cool, they signify great destruction, and it probably demonstrates the creature's toughness to the audience (much like the silver Terminator walking out of the burning oil tanker explosion).

I don't think the explosion is relevant or needing to be explained… it is visual popcorn for moviegoers and a sign of how much trouble NYC is in…

I see your point Fehd - however, even the ball of fire the Terminator
emerged from had it's point of origin displayed as you've pointed out (oil tanker).
Likely we'll find out in the movie what exactly causes the tremendous
bilge of fire and destruction.
Until then it serves as a mystery agitator...much like bloop, 6, cornbread, etc. Cool

And yea dalphx, lil' hot canz was before the azplozion and stairwell melee that ensues. Wink

Isn't that what *every* social group of friends consists of? In my circle, I definitely know who fits those roles... and I'm torn between me being either "brains" or "idiot comic relief" myself...

LOL....Guess if you eat enormous amounts of deep sea bacteria anything is possible. I tried finding maps of underground NYC (Tunnels). Would JJ's monster use the same way as Godzilla did in last movie(Tunnels under NYC)?

You'd have better luck finding out what the monster is, there's so many tunnels, pipes, Subway lines/stations both active and disused that there are tunnels that get forgetton. It's what happenes with a city that has had differing ways of doing things like sewars for a good few centuries. You won't find a map that'll have all the sewer/subway/pipe lines.

i'm pretty sure we're not going to be able to prove anymore about the explosion then

it happened
it was huge
it was downtown
it was in the city
it was really huge

the only ONLY ONLY evidence we have to support anything relating to the explosion is what we see in the trailer, and what you get from that is listed above.

What if the monster (aka GrumpyPants) sinks one of Tagruato's ships on the way to NYC, and gets covered in petroleum, then hits a gas line or something and lights up the city? Although it would have to happen pretty close to the city for the petroleum to stay on the monster while swimming.

I'd say Mr. GrumpyPants was having a bad day.

With the news report showing "Earthquake?" on it, and not "Explosion", I believe they had felt tremors or reports of shaking prior to the explosions. That would lean towards the monster growing underneath NYC or coming up through the ground instead of invading from water like the poster kind of shows.

Could go either way, but for the record, the "Earthquake?" graphic appears on the NY1 newscast *before* the actual explosion. At first, it's just the roar and the 2-second blackout -- that's when the newscast kicks in with reports of a possible earthquake.

Only after the party moves to the roof does the explosion occur.

I never really noticed this before, but you can clearly see in this screen shot that there are buildings in front of AND behind the explosion.

That doesn't mean the explosion originated between those buildings, though. Even light spreads out after passing through two structures. It's entirely possible the explosion occured behind the "back" buildings. The outward spread behind those buildings would be unseen due to the ground level view. And let's not forget that the New York in the trailer doesn't correspond entirely to the real New York (see the posts way back in July), so we don't know exactly where the coast is in relation to the buildings pictured...

To be honest, you can't be sure how much time passes between the first roar/quake and the newscast; it's not one take, so it could be several minutes after.

Newscasts will not jump in and report an earthquake seconds after it occurs, especially in New York. California perhaps, but not New York; for all they know it's a car accident or a subway or anything. In New York, there would be quite some time of "what the hell was that?" especially if it's not something that wasn't seen by everyone (you can't compare this to 9/11, which people saw all the way from Jersey).

Did the Explosion happen in the City?

What, was GrumpyPants palming the Statue of Liberty's Head, and then decided to Fire it down the Street? and if it happen in the city the Slusho Gangbang would have been consumed in the fireball, considering where we think they are located in manhattan. has anyone timelined earthquake, TV, grumpypants ignites fart, running down stairs, in the street, the hot chic lil with her nice cans, SOL head, over. Correct?

Wow, GrumpyPants, Slusho Gangbang, hot chic lil? I love it. You are my new favorite cloverfield addict. My girlfriend is gonna love the name GrumpyPants for the monster... I never really thought that it was a "GangBang" per se, but that could be the porno rip-off.

True. We only know that the first roar comes between about 11:15 pm (time on the clock above Rob's door as he enters the apartment for the party) and 12:whatever shows up on the NY1 caption.

But I was just responding to jfiscus' comment, and pointing out that the explosion does NOT occur with the first roar, but the SECOND roar -- after the newscast, after everyone has gone to the roof.

didnt we...

figure out the apporx. place of the explosion, given we new the location across the street from the Gangbang's Apt. from the preview, and the fact that the grumpypants forces the SOL to give NYC head(literally), that grumpypants comes in and up the bay so the explosion and is in lower manhattan? we cannot reasonably discern the location of ground zero? in town, in water, underground, outta lil's rack, outta irack?
