 [SPEC] New Trailer Release?

Counting today, we have 13 Fridays between now and the long-awaited Friday, January 18th, 2008. Since new movies generally come out on Fridays (with some exceptions around holidays), that gives us 13 opportunities for the new "real" trailer that JJ Abrams promised at ComicCon to be released.

Is there a general rule-of-thumb for how far in advance of a movie's release date that the trailer is distributed? I know that sometimes teaser trailers are released months in advance (like 1-18-08 ), but I assume the "real" trailer will follow a more conventional timeline. Does someone work at a theater or related industry that can say trailers typically come out, say, 4 weeks before the release, 6 weeks before or whatever?

Also, my own speculation is that the release of this trailer will be the moment at which we finally learn the actual title, rather than some kind of press release. One of us will just be sitting in a theater one Friday night and have an "OMG moment". Just my theory...

According the Wikipedia, the only two Paramount Films left this year are Beowulf and No Hills For Dead Women. Beowulf comes out in November, but I'm not sure about NHFDW's release date. EIther one could have a Cloverfield trailer

I don't think it HAS to be a Paramount film tho'. It could be a film that'll attract the same kind of crowd. Or any younger crowd that would/could help push the viral marketing along.

Thing is, it would probably cost Paramount less if they put the trailer in one of their own movies. That's what they did with Transformers, but you're right, we can't rule out non-Paramount movies. We need to narrow our options down to movies coming out soon that have had a lot of marketing and publicity. That's probably where the trailer would be placed.

If paramount is wanting to put some money towards marketing the film I think we need to look at the films that are coming out, that would have the same type of audience that would want to see Cloverfield. Why waste money on Non Paramount films if the audience is mostly 50+ women.

Demographics is always considered when marketing a film. We should make a list of films coming out between now and december (surely there will be a trailer by Decemeber)

We should look for films that would have an audience of 18 to 35 year olds, Action, sci fi, horror related.

Off the top of my head some films that may or may not include a Cloverfield trailer could be

30 days of Night October 19 (Today) we would probably of heard something by now

Rendition October 19 (today) we would probably heard something by now

I am Legend December 14

Saw 4 October 26

This is top of my head, with me doing research, anyone have any other films that may fit the demographic mold? Ill look up more

I dont think a trailer will come out before a new movie, like transformers. They did that with the first one.

I think the trailer will appear some other way.

How will this be marketed to the masses?

Actually this brings up a good point. How will this movie be marketed in the month or so before its release? Besides a theatrical trailer which could come anywhere between one to 2 months before the release date, there are also the other traditional marketing avenues for movie releases. You would normally see Television advertising a week to month before release date, plus all the press junkets, advance screenings for the press, interviews on the entertainment shows and magazines with the actors talking about the movie, late night talk show appearances, etc, etc.

As this movie is evolving in "real-time", it would be weird for me to see the actor who plays Rob talking about the film in EW or on Access Hollywood and at the same time, having his character IG right up to Jan 18.

I guess that is what puts the "alternate" into ARG.

Oh, FWIW, I predict the next trailer will be in front of Beowulf on Nov 16.

I get the impression that all media coverage will kept 'under the rug' so to speak, before the movie is released.

i think there will be more on tv than in cinemas or websites

think about six small teasers Very Happy
made not like normal advertisements or movie trailers,
but like some news show or something like that.....

not all are online like we are, i expect that in every country
"partner" tv stations for jj, like abc in the us, pro 7 in germany
(lost series hosters) will start soon with advertisement campains
or similar

I would be inclined to say that there won't be a new trailer, but, if there isn't, then you won't really get a very big audience. I mean, they'll get all of us, but we're not enough. I'm kind of thinking that, maybe, they're going to wait until the movie's released, then just play alot of television commercials. That would get the opening night/week audience, who're coming to get the mystery cleared up, and also the people who are new to the concept, and just interested in the film.

Just a thought.

I think that there will be another trailer coming out. But other than that, there will be alot of little ads on TV. Perhaps during Lost.
