Reply to Rose!

"I could be wrong but I sense a feeling of unease in your questions which relates to the way people act in situations online and in the real world. Maybe you are just curious, but you don't seem to understand the way players act in given situations. I'm a bit of a player advocate myself, so I may defensively be seeing something that isn't there in your questions. "

Hey Rose - I am really wondering what you are talking about here - if you could make it a bit more clear I could maybe help you to sort out what it is you might be feeling coming from my questions.

If I may, I think the word 'unease' is not exactly on par. I think it would be more of an open ended - open minded questioning. As for you acting defensively about players I am not at all sure what you are talking about as I cannot imagine how I might be attacking or creating any sort of problems with my questioning - I was under the impression that that was the purpose of these forums. But then again this medium can make it difficult to sense tone Smile

As for my own personal research - for sure! I thank you for those suggestions and as a matter of fact I have been looking into most of these things and learning a lot! I am also researching video game narrative design, D &D and other RPGs & murder mysteries as well I am taking steps towards behavioural psychology all to get the most well rounded view of what I am doing. But as you said any help I can get to learn is so appreciated!!!

As for the intention comment I think you may be reversing the point I was trying to make. What I was saying is that in a world such as this it is difficult to know where people's intentions are and their reasoning may be different from the next guy. Because there are no set rules someone might build a fan site/ fake site intending to be helpful and just end up with the title of 'jacker' or an actual jacker could lie and say that their intentions were innocent! One never can tell when it comes to intention!

Anyway - if I said anything which might have upset you or caused you to be on the defensive I really didn't mean to. I am new around here and just plain curious! Smile

Making a flying post on this thread (I do have some stuff I'd like to add but don't have the time at the moment).
This post is a rather interesting 'dairy of an ARG jacker' as such. It happened during the Giants in out Midst promotion, a small thing for the PS2 game Shadows of Colossus, and though it wasn't trying to be harmful shows how a gamejack can cause confusion. Interesting read.

My take on the definitions

Fan Fiction = same universe, but labeled as not IG and the owner takes credit. Homage to the game, gift to the PM & the players.

Game Jack = same universe, labels itself IG, but not created the PM team, and it's owner hides the authorship in an attempt to put itself into the game universe. Deliberate misdirection and attention-getting behaviors.

One thing I am wondering: What if someone did a gamejack to actually help out an IG Character? Say, Bob is allied with Evil Corporation #145, and the Corporation want to stop all the other players from finding out the truth.

So, Bob creates a gamejack website (with premission from the Corporation) to misdirect all the players to the website and fool the players, buying the Corporation enough time to pull off its latest scheme.

Now, I understand it is unlikely this is a good idea (it can make many players angry)...but how would one classify it? As part of the main game, or as a gamejack?

If it's done with the PM & player knowledge, that is part of the game.

In Sammeeeees we created a duplicate version of an IG website to fool a character (and hide some key info that was hidden on the real website).

This was clearly identified in chat (where we hatched the plan) and in the forums of uF where we summarized what we did & why.

Not a gamejack.

I'm not exactly a veteran ARGer, but it seems to me that 'gamejacking' is a general term that describes activities that disrupt the flow of an ARG with content not authorized by the PM, and not clearly denoted as such.

There can be certain variations on that central theme (unintentional gamejacking, etc.), mostly based around intent and other indeterminable factors, but the fundamental action and its consequences are always undesirable, as they disrupt the PM's plans and distract the players. Even if it makes the game more fun by chance or whatnot, it doesn't matter; it's always bad, as I would argue that the PM has a right to run his game the way he wants no matter what.
