I think there'll be another trailer, but it will be online only.
I honestly don't expect to see any more commercial ads on TV or theatrical previews. I believe the whole point of the viral campaign by JJ is to prove that he *can* sell a movie by word-of-mouth via Internet without having to shell out millions of bucks to Madison Avenue for traditional marketing.

Uh... guys. Season four of "Lost" begins airing in February. Why would they release the new trailer a month after the film hits theaters? D'oh!

Well, JJ Abrams himself said there would be a "real" trailer in his speech at Comic-Con, viewable here: http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/news.php?id=6768
so that's what I'm basing the speculation of a new trailer on. Of course, he could change his mind, but so far that's what he has said officially on the matter.
I was hoping we might have a contributor who works in the biz that could say something along the lines of "Well, movies coming out on January 18 would usually have trailers in theatres by December 21st", but apparently such a rule-of-thumb doesn't exist, and the studios choose trailer release dates in a highly individualized manner.
To me, the Beowulf release date (11/16/07) still seems a little early for a 1-18-08 trailer release. I would think they would want the trailer attached to a movie that will be getting fresh eyes during the Christmas holidays, and by then Beowulf will be getting a little long in the tooth.
Eh, who knows?

I'd say early to mid December would be an educated guess. I would guess they'd want to steer more people online with the next trailer and you'd need to give the new people a chance to catch up. Also most movies seem to start their advertising campaigns a month or so in advance.

Well we only have a teaser.
No trailer and definitely no TV spots.
Most movies have a trailer at least 3 or 4 months pre-release.
Then the TV spots during that last month (and a half, sometimes).

Keep in mind too that JJ didn't foot the bill for this film. Paramount isn't going to rely on untested marketing schemes. They'll want some sense of traditional marketing.

Maybe this is all a sort of weird puzzle for a new trailer

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're getting at, but your comment made me realize that I have no idea what the next trailer would be like. It seems like they "blew their wad" with the teaser. Certainly, they won't show the monster. So what would they show?
Maybe they would in fact show the backstory, and we'd see the characters being involved with Tagruato/Slusho, and through various brief scenes we'd get a sense of impending disaster based on the glimpses of events we're given (e.g., hush-hush back room meetings at Tagruato, tense moments on the drilling platform, twisted Slusho junkies). And then they wrap it up with a few scenes of everyone running for their life, and maybe reprise the flying SOL head.
That would be a totally different feel than the "out of nowhere" paradigm shift we experience in the teaser, where we go from casual get-together to massive destruction in just a few seconds. But I assume all this backstory we're getting online will somehow tie in to the onscreen action in a tangible way, and maybe the next trailer will provide a taste of that. Only now, they'll have the extra complication of somehow integrating what is revealed in a new trailer with what is happening online. Should be interesting.

Sorry maybe I should have explained a little further. In Lost if you went to Oceanicflight815.com and you did certain things with the seating charts you were able to see sneak peeks at second season trailers and found websites which showed deleted scenes from the first season. So maybe this is kind of like that, there's an obvious puzzle (i think, so maybe not so obvious) in the flavor droids. Maybe once we crack that or find Jamie's lost stuff (doubtful but who knows). Maybe it'll unlock a trailer. Who knows?

I see. Fascinating. It certainly could happen. For many of the clues we've received, they were more or less handed to us, or didn't require much deduction. But I think they showed us with the photo->translation->Macdooble review->Tagruato.jp chain of events that they aren't afraid to challenge us a bit.
From what I've read, the consensus on the flavor bots is that the Flash has been decompiled, and there's nothing hidden there but who knows?

remember the godzilla movie had different trailers all over the place months leading up to the movie and never showed godzilla. and after opening weekend every trailer had the monster in it.
the next trailer wont be more backstory related to the internet stuff except maybe tagruato cause 80% of the people who see the trailer won't know what the hell they are talking about.
it'll probably have the roar in it.

Following the pattern of the first trailer in a way, I could easily see the second trailer being something about Tagruato and it's subsidiaries. I think something like what we saw at the party, where we see something at the beginning that focuses on and elaborates a little on a character, seems to be leading us to something mundane, interrupted by a mysterious and then catastrophic event - the emergence of the monster. Basically instead of seeing Rob being thrown a surprise party, it could be people working on Chuai station, a tanker, even a board meeting at Tagruato - and then somehow our monster interjects itself into the situation. Chances are good when we start seeing this second trailer, we might very well NOT know it's about 1-18-08. There might be a relatively sneaky hint (how much screen time did the Slusho shirt get?), but only when the unmistakeable monster is heard or even when we are just shown the date will we be made aware of the subject of the trailer.
The formula worked before and sparked a surge of interest, it could again. This time of course people will have a LOT more to find when they see it.

Maybe....
Operations center on Chuai station leading in a tanker to dock for loading of oil/DSN. Pouring rain outside mainly done by radar and nav instruments. One moment tanker is there on screen next nothing.....then ROOOOOAAAAAARRRRRR. Whole rig shakes, alarms blaring sparks, fires. Mayday message sent out....... cut to receving end in Tagruato headquarters....shaky image fire around.....(garbled message hard to make out words)"Somethings attacking station" ROOOAAA.......cuts to dead air.
Then maybe Rob in a meeting late on the night of the party being intropduced to this footage and having to create press release or some such spin about an industrial accident even thopugh he thought he heard attacking and the roar.

or this!
Kids are playing around near the docks and they hear something from the water and in the dark near the statue they see sparks and a giant hand swipe the SOL smacking the head into some buildings, the kids with their handheld duck and cover to see the hand come pick the head back up and knock around some buildings, but you dont' see the monster, just a dark scratchy filmed figure of a giant claw/hand/thing.

I don't think we will even see a glimpse of the monsters shape or size, think that is going to be kept entirely for the movie. Then again...... how abbout my previous guess plus after the tanker disappears someone goes out on the railing or is there already looks over into the water and sees a vague shape or something.....how's that?
