Obscure? OBSCURE? This viral marketing campaign--as disappointing as it has been--has reached large mainstream exposure. Everybody saw Transformers this summer; everybody said, "What the hell?"; and everybody is eager to find out what, exactly, is going on. Besides that, there are three months left until the release of the film--you wouldn't expect to see big marketing for it at this point.

Lets ball park it at 5 to 10 thousand people still following this with a much smaller crowd following it as close as we are. Thats not enough ticket sales to even come close to breaking even. Hell, just the UF crowd wouldn't even pay for the Kraft Service catering. I agree that they don't expect massive numbers out of this thing but these companies want to at least make a profit. It probably won't be the biggest advertising campaign ever but just wait, it will come.

well, if the movie is consistent with what we saw in the trailer, I'd say no higher than a PG17 - unless they throw a sex scene in there. And I'm praying I dont have to see heterosex in this movie (no offense).

Seeing how Jaime might have a topless girl in her bed, we might be getting a different kind of sex, but you're still out of luck, hmg, lol.
I have yet to see a movie with homosexual sex that has really advanced a plot (Brokeback would've sucked just as bad with or without.) Maybe this'll be the one.

hmghost,

If it'll make you feel any better: there's a damn good chance that we might see some Hud-Rob action onscreen. Or at least Hud trying to hit on Rob.

Have you read Hud's blogs and comments to Rob? The way he idolizes him ("How am I gonna survive without you? You're my main dude"...and the comic-book heroes blog where he seems to compare Rob to his idol from X-Men, Cyclops) has led me to believe that Hud is in the closet and has been lusting after Rob for quite awhile now.

Classic love triangle, expanded exponentially -- Hud has the hots for Rob; Rob has the hots for Beth; Beth probably has the hots for Lil; who already is in a relationship with Hawk; who probably lusts after Jamie; who has the hots for Teddy. And also the hots, maybe, for Rob. And, uh, maybe Lena. And....well, everybody, in Jamie's case.... Embarassed

That's it, Jamie must work for Tagruato.
She's part of it's secret agenda. Why?
They both want to screw the world.
Laughing

Edit: That also means the movie must be NC-17

It should have a R rating, They never show people getting killed in PG-13, Want to see people chewed up or squished. Want the gore effects of a horror movie into a great Monster movie.

My point was that all PG-13 movies aren't necessarily bad, and all R movies aren't necessarily good.

Again, with the level of effort JJ (and his company) has put into this marketing, it has reached a fairly large audience. It has been discussed on television, etc. Most everybody on the intarweb has at least heard of the 1-18 phenomenon. I don't think I'd label this 'obscure' by any stretch.

Certainly, this isn't major mainstream marketing, but it's NOT obscure.

Um, Jurassic Park? PG-13. Guy chomped right in half.

But yeah, I'm hoping for an R, too, just for realistic dialog. Smile

Oh, I'd say this is an obscure movie at the moment. Its more of a cult following then a mainstream following. Until the movie gets its own page on Myspace I think the overwhelming majority of interneters won't have heard of more than just a rumbling about this film. Thats why I just can't see this thing not getting proper promotion the final month or at least a few weeks before its release. If this was a Lion's Gate film or something like that then maybe I'd have my doubts about any major promotions but we have to remember that Paramount will have expectations. I'd be surprised if Bad Robot or JJ invested enough capitaly in this movie to have much of a say on how that final month is promoted. I'm sure Paramount is open to some left of center promotion but they'll want a security blanket somewhere.

I think Paramount's bottom line is that they're looking at the bottom line...for "Star Trek."

Pretty much, Paramount hired JJ for one reason above all: to make "Star Trek" into a megabajillion blockbuster. That's why they threw him $190 million for that and gushed that he's the next Steven Spielberg.

So, $30 million to throw JJ a bone to go play in the sandbox, flex his creative talent? No prob. Paramount could care less if "Cloverfield" sinks or swims, so long as "Trek" brings home the gold.

Oi, haven't heard someone bring up that movie for a while. And it had such potential, too.
