children of men=best movie last year by far

Children of Men was superb! The realism incorporated into the violence was disturbing and somewhat shocking. I felt empathy for the characters because of those sequences. One of the best films of the year.

The whole assault on the refugee camp sequence was jaw-droppingly beautifully filmed. Seriously, one of the greatest pieces of cinematography I've *ever* seen (curious -- I had this same discussion with Rob Hawkins a few weeks ago... Wink )

And the way that, in the middle of this all-out war going on around them, EVERYBODY suddenly stops and stares in open-mouthed silence when they realize that Kee is carrying an actual child, the last hope for humanity...and the crowd reverently parts to allow them to pass...

...and then goes right back to blowing the hell out of each other after they're gone.

Wow. One of the most sublime moments in cinematic history -- makes you go from this uplifting feeling of optimism and faith in the brotherhood of man one moment, only to have that feeling come mercilessly crashing back down when you see them start killing each other again.

If that scene doesn't break your heart, *no* scene in a movie will.

I was blown away by that 6 minute single-camera shot. I've never seen anything like that before. I think Children of Men was the perfect movie.

YES. Primer was an awesome movie. I picked that one up on a whim without knowing anything about it, and I'm so glad I did.

Not remake but similar

I have not been on this forum for a while since the movie has gotten closer, and I don't want to know too much about it before actually seeing it, but I want to point out the movie I recommended in this thread Miracle Mile to me seems very familiar with the info from the tv commercial about "who would you go back for?"

talk amongst yourselves

Beat me to it!!!

The Rob/Beth subplot takes a lot of cues from Miracle Mile.

From wikipedia:

The film takes place in a single day and night, beginning as the two main characters, Harry (Anthony Edwards) and Julie (Mare Winningham), meet and are immediately attracted to each other. They make a date for later in the evening, but fail to meet due to a quirk of fate. While they are apart, Harry receives a wrong-number phone call, and is told that, unbeknownst to everyone else, nuclear war is about to break out in seventy minutes. He searches frantically for Julie, helped and hindered by various strangers, who are initially unaware of the impending apocalypse.

The whole film is shot in real time and is really quite terrifying. Harry and Julie bear a huge resemblance to Rob and Beth in terms of character, and some of the later scenes are very similar to what we've seen in all of the trailers/commercials. It's a good film, very intense, very scary.

1-18-08 type films

Even though we don't know a lot about 1-18-08 we do know that it is an original monster movie. A good film that I enjoyed called Children of men is a end of the world type film like 1-18-08.
I have seen some other film suggestions, so I thought about having a thread dedicated to films that we might like.

I lurk all the time, but found this video and thought it seemed a lot like 1-18-08. This is about a boy who films his families thanksgiving, but ends up capturing a lot more.

Enjoy

If you want to see a movie with a similar backstory, in a somewhat similar vein and style, see The Last Broadcast.
I incidentally caught it on Bravo or IFC one day, and it was really impresive.
I would actually suggest that some of it's concepts (in a filmmaking sense) might apply to the topic of our current interest.

From this thread.
So, do you have any good film suggestions? If you do post them here.

Just watched that Incident at Lake Country.

Crazy stuff.
