Redhatty, can't wait to hear what they say - that is really nice of them to call. That was some of the best and inventive flash websites I have seen too. It was fun all around.

They really were some beautiful websites, weren't they? That burning newspaper was just plain EVIL

iCG did a great job with the mechanics of the game too. It was kinda hinted that the 11 day delay, "The Waiting Game" was really not intentional, it was to be much shorter, but there were "complications" (quotes are my expression, not direct quotes!)

I imagine that many people realized that there is a learning curve, both in playing and creating ARGs & ARG-like games.

I *may* have a chance to share player input at a later time. So all the players, lurkers, admin & mods, please feel free to contribute info. I think I would prefer to deal with a couple of specific areas (if I even get the opportunity to share - of course, we *know* that PMs lurk uF)

1) What specific areas of game development really "light your fire?" Is it brilliant websites, character interaction, puzzles? I realize that we each have our own preferred area of "expertise" in games, I am not asking for that, i am wondering, overall, what kind of elements would make you talk to people, even who have never even heard the term ARG, because you were so impressed with them?

2) what kind of games (including advertising campaigns, like this was) would you like to see in the future, or just see more of?

TIA!

Well, like you said, I guess it is personal preference. I do happen to like the "product" args - they are fun and usually come to an end within a reasonable amount of time; anywhere from 3 months - a week. I like the fact that this marketing company made contact with you after the game as I have had experience with other companies that you never hear from again and you wonder what happened and leave you hanging. I have only participated in 3 product ARG's - Appleby's Resturant, Covet Perfume and Guinness. I think out of the three I liked the flash websites of Guinness the best - as they were really fun. The covet ARG had more interactive assignments which at first I didn't think I would like (making a video of our own for 2 challenges), but after I completed the tasks realized I actually had fun doing it and learned how to make videos because of the task (even without a camera). But these were 2 totally different types of ARGs - Covet was slower, giving out 1 clue a week and was not intense except perhaps once a week for 30 minutes. Guinness was faster, intense and addictive, and consumed your thoughts. I am thinking I had more fun with Guinness, being a fast intense race - first one to finish instead of a drawing at the end.

As a newbie to ARGs, I'd have to say that this was an almost perfect intro to the genre: the elements were recognizable enough from more "traditional" games just on the W3 instead of a CD/DVD. So for me, until I fully find my feet, a variety of puzzles, red herrings, interesting and intriguing sites and some character interaction is perfect. It got me talking about both ARGs and the campaign. (And how many of us even visited iCG's site in search of clues?) Some of the students here were interested partly because you could win Guinness stuff and partly because of the concept. A few of them had a go and it will be interesting to see if they persist.
I've been reading back through the thread and comments along the lines of 'this has taken over my life' are frequent; it was certainly all I could think of for nearly a week. The intensity of the timeframe certainly added to the entire experience.
Apart from the damn waiting and Guinness not sending me an invite until you guys were halfway there, it was a joy to play.

Hope this helps.

Freddie wants you all to know that the team at iChameleon was as impressed with & challenged by us as we were with them.

How exciting!!! I can't wait to hear from you on what was said! Very Happy

I pretty much agree with what Palm has said. I have only played two args this one and Covet. I think a combination of the two styles would be nice. I didn't like how Covet created a whole story and never finished it. They left us hanging with quite a few characters. I do like a set time frame. I also like the random drawings along with the skilled wins, that way everyone can win something. (Gee can ya tell I'm one of the slower ones Laughing )

Oh how I wish we had more veteran ARGers in this thread. This was a contest with ARG characteristics in that we sent emails & got a little bit of a story.

A regular ARG usually does not have prizes - you may get some cool swag, but nothing that would be classified as a "grand prize." There is much more story & character interaction & use of different web sites, of course.

I know I would love to see a full blown ARG that included a prize package - that would be Da Bomb! But that would also require an enormous amount of time from the PM team as they would HAVE to lurk the board & IRC to know who really got a solve - many things are team effort - a little here helps someone else get a little there & then BAM! the solve Smile

wouldn't it be sweet to see something really valuable transformed into a ARG style contest? Jewelry, Cars, homes, etc.? Well if the genre keeps growing we may one day see that Smile I'll keep on playing even if I don't win anything, but swag IS cool!

I really don't see it happening, I truly believe the best I get out of this is bragging rights & an interview with iChameleon Group. No worries mates Smile, I was in it for the fun, I was shocked that I was the first.

But the big question now is, Who was second? This Article mentions that they are being verified today (Monday in UK). Are they also a UFer? If so, speak up, you get Props!

Which begs the question as to *why* there weren't more?
Not ARG-enough? Too short? T&Cs?
Maybe the very mechanics that drew me here put the vets off.

Hope some other threads give you more feedback for your chat with iCG. And as I'm interested in how Guinness are going to present the result, I'll add anything pertinent before the thread dies completely.

Read the article - I find it hysterically funny that some people actually went to the James Taylor concert (next to the Las Vegas sign or between the "signposts") in Las Vegas looking for a clue.

"and when rumours surfaced that James Taylor's Golden Years concert in Las Vegas was a destination in the game — gold domino, golden years, y'see? — a handful of participants showed up for a clue"

Hope they had a good time anyway - I love James Taylor.
