ARhhG!
Puppetmaster Pitfalls

Okay, we've run into a few problems with an ARG we're planning. Know in advance that this is about as grassrootsy as you can possibly get. The budget is, preferably, zero, because we're all broke students. This is our first time behind the curtain for all of us.

We need a cult of about twenty villainous would-be demons on the internet, each one a very unique character. Since none of these have to be at all involved in the ARG beyond posting in the cults' forums and pretending that they're doing evil things, we figure our internet connections should be able to get us some volunteers to play as demons for a few minutes each day. But the big problem is that about six of these demons have to be physically interacted with; talked too, seen around town, etc. Discovering the identity of these demons is a part of the mystery, so if they're all just us and our friends, the audience will figure out the pattern very quickly. So we need three or four people we don't know to get called up by random strangers trying to solve an insidious plot to sink the world into perpetual darkness, and further, they must be willing to ambush these people as they're searching for drops in the dead of night (we're very ambitious with this). Where do we find people like that?

The next problem is that we need to get our audience, which is local and unaccustomed to looking out for ARGs, involved. How do I get them interested in finding out the machinations of a demonic cult without convincing them that the cult is real, telling them upfront it's a game, or getting arrested? Naturally, I'm inclined to offer them some kind of code to crack that will lead them to the demonic message board mentioned above, but how do I do that in a way that will have everyone in my school trying to crack the code? Just putting up a poster with nothing but the code on it would definitely get some takers, but who is supposed to have put the code there and why aren't they solving this mystery themselves?

Finally, there's the problem of the time limit. This ARG will last exactly thirteen days. The first drop will be placed at exactly midnight, and then, exactly three hundred and twelve hours to solve the mystery and prevent the evil ritual (And since it's intended to take them about three hundred and eleven hours to figure it out, we're planning for a heart-pounding climax in an abandoned building at around eleven PM). This is a problem because we can't just wait around for a few weeks while our audience cracks the code/hacks the website, gets to the message board, finds out about the ritual, and starts trying to find out who's a demon. They need to start code cracking within a day or two of the first drop being planted.

So how do we pull this off?

For your demons, since you say you're all students I assume you're in University or some other educational place. An easy thing to do would be to advertise positions for volunteers (or if you can scrape some cash together, a little payment) for people to take part in an "art project". Once you get some responses, explaining what it will involve (and it sounds very involved!) is pretty crucial, so they know what they're getting into.

Your second and third problems kinda go hand-in-hand; since there's a time limit, getting people in and quickly is going to be key if it's going to be successful. Personally, I think for a non-ARG audience, 13 days as a limit is a bit tight. Even the most effective advertising will get few takers, and being local you can eliminate that to roughly 5 people getting truly involved, if that.

Anyway, your large poster idea isn't bad, if you're keeping it local. If it decodes to the forum address, have it be the "signal" to your demonic troops (I know I'm kinda ripping off MU here, but your audience is unlikely to know). Your demons can have introductory "I saw the message on the B building wall, here I am" kinda posts, which would indicate why the message was even there.

Lastly, keeping TINAG but not letting your non-ARG audience get concerned is kinda hard. Supernatural cults aren't exactly realistic anyway, but perhaps some minor indication in your forum footer, like "a Maldeus art project" or something may be wise.
